Oh man, is there anything nicer than 8 bit graphics with super smooth animation like that? It's just screaming to be run on a CRT alright.

Here's a question for those who know out there.
I am going to pick up the Rockman titles for the Famicom and it may take a while.
In the meantime there's a PS2 collection of the Megaman/Rockman titles and it looks like a good stop gap, anyone know if it's any good? Apparently they're straight conversions from the Rockman originals, as well a few extras.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 51,898 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

They are decent but there's a few problems with them. First they reversed the buttons which is really annoying. Second some of the games have content cut which is inexcusable. The intros and endings to some games are gone. On the other hand it's the only time the two arcade mega an games have been released on a home console.

Also Marvelous USA seem to be on a roll bringing the perviest games to the US. Akiba's Trip 2 is coming out. It's a game about a guy battling vampires in Akihabara. However he must uncover vampires first.... by stripping girls and exposing them to the sun. Stay classy Japan

Managed to grab one of those 99c copies of Killzone Shadowfall that were incorrectly going on PSN last night, which is probably around 99c more than it's actually worth :pac:

I played the first level, which was as bland a tech demo as one would expect. Some of the attempts at drama were pretty ridiculous. It did make me wonder why more games these days don't just do away with story entirely and get to the point. I can't imagine there are many people out there playing the Killzone series for its narrative depths, generic lore or complex world building? Ah, for the time of barely connected levels and the 'story' summed up on the loading screen. At least some of the smaller PC shooters seem to be embracing the good old days more than the bloated AAA ones!

You'd be surprised unfortunately. There's a lot of people thinking that 'oh the helghast aren't that evil despite looking like space nazis's, it's the player that is evil' is the height of dramatic storytelling.

I want more videogame makers to make their stories the way Platinum games and Shinji Mikami do. They know they aren't great storywriters but they know that so they have lots of fun filling their games with pure cheese.

Then at the oposite end of the spectrum you have the likes of Kojima who is getting an over inflated ego because of all the fanboys that big up his horrendous writing. Unfortunately most writers in the videogame business are immature 20 something year old nerds which is why it's usually sci-fi schlock or A&D rip offs with plenty of gender and violence issues. It's rare that someone like Ken Levine (a writer by trade before moving to games) gets in a creative position in the industry.

It wasn't long ago when I was happy when the only story I had in an action game like Contra was exploding through the windscreen of a truck and being attacked by aliens I instinctively knew were terrible and needed to die. If it was Killzone I'd find out how we attacked their home planet first... then kill them anyway because I couldn't give two flying ****s.

Game Designers, if you can't write then don't bother.

There's bad writing which knows it's bad writing and then there's bad writing which as you said, is elevated and put on a pedestal by fans (giving the author an undeserved sense of artistic ability).

Unfortunately the latter is enough to have them continue writing their crap.

I wouldn't necessarily say Mikami even rips the piss particularly well - I thought Vanquish was just 'dull generic' as opposed to 'hilariously generic'. As for Platinum, they can be delightfully cheesy when storytelling - some of the cutscenes in Bayonetta are hilarious - but they can be utterly leaden as well. Anarchy Reigns was a real chore in that regard, although they were trying to fit a narrative around the most absurd premise imaginable :pac:

I'm playing a lot of Bravely Default at the moment, and that's another game that could have done with massively paring down its storytelling, or at least improving it. It thankfully isn't as overwrought as some JRPGs (or indeed Japanese games generally - MGS or Yakuza etc...), but the story sequences are very often dull and lengthy - as one review pointed out, why say something in 1 sentence when you can say it in 50 :P. At least the characters are mostly charismatic.

I'll always support storytelling ambition in games, and there's been tonnes of positive advances in that regard over the last few years. But certainly there's something to be said for more games not deluding themselves and letting the game speak for itself. After all, a lot of these half-assed campaigns or stories require a ludicrous amount of resources that would be better spent elsewhere. I have quite a bit of admiration for the developers of Titanfall not adding a pointless single player mode simply to fulfill generic market criteria! Even if you have no interest in the game whatsoever, at least they're focusing on what they're good at.

April 25th is the date Dark Souls 2 will be coming out on PC... will probably have to double dip on this one (maybe triple if my collectors edition doesn't arrive in time for the 14th)

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 51,898 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

I saw Vanquish in a completely different light , I found it to be a complete piss take of the over the top generic western action games. It was like Mikami was making a statement to the developers of these games to have some fun with it. I'm not sure how you could think it was anything other than a total piss take, it was so over the top.

Info bombs of too much story can really kill the pace of a game or RPG. Square Enix are particularly awful for this so I'm not surprised to hear that about Bravely Default. I just hope it's not MGS4 levels! It's annoying that Atlus can tell such great stories in the Shin Megami Tensei series with such minimal scenes and dialogue yet it takes forever and a codex to tell absolute rot like the FFXIII storyline. SMT4 like Persona and Nocturne was an absolute joy due to the fast pace of the story and battle system and the dynamic between them.

A good example of how bad Square have gotten is the difference between Sword of Mana and Final Fantasy Adventure. Both are the same game with the same story but while the gameboy game gives you only the bare minimum story you need Sword of Mana explains everything right down to the characters questioning whether a character is truly evil or not... a character who is the main villain and called Dark Lord.

360 version all the way. Cannot bloody wait for it!

I was actually collecting a Gamecube from him at the time and just didn't call him to talk about cakes;) I just told her he loves Mario and she came up with this.
