Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Really liking the free demo of Carmageddon on iOS. With the digital controls it's nice to play.

Anyone know of any shortcomings compared to the PC version?

Anything besides not having expansion packs like the splat pack.

I think the original had more than 6 cars in each race though.
    No inside view either.
I guess for a miserable 89c nobody can complain though!

There's me moaning about crash and I've just bought all 3 on psn. They're 99 cent on the us psn at the moment.

    Jaysus if I had a PS3 I could save a fortune!

I'm currently queing up a to buy list for PS1 games.
If the PS2 could play ps1 ROMs I probably wouldn't bother buying the originals.
My phat ps2 is one of the earlier models that doesn't play ps1 cd-r's with free mcboot.
Era if you're going to use CDs you might as well have the originals I think.
Is there many PS1 games on PSN?

The eu store is pretty barebones and its mostly crappy Pal versions.

The us store is a bit better while the Japanese store is full of delightful wonders and a few expensive rarities.

I don't recommend playing cd-rs on a PS2. It will ruin your laser.

If you are buying PS1 games don't go PAL. You'll regret it down the line like I do with most of my collection and games display frequency is locked to their region so a PAL game on a NTSC machine will still run in 50 hz

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 51,900 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Well the first crash bandicoot is worse than I remember it. It runs at about 20 FPS which isn't great for a platformers and the controls are a bit flaky.

I see Raiden 4 is coming to the US PSN store, any sign of it coming our way?
And, if not, is there a handy way to buy it?

I'm not really collecting ps1 games per se, just buying ones that I really want to play ATM.

I have only played a few in emulators so I'm not that worried about 50hz speed in this case, as I don't know what I'm missing.

On 16-bit consoles that's another story though! Couldn't be jumping in slow motion in The Revenge Of Shinobi! Played quite a lot of mega drive and SNES games in emulators so simply cannot go back to 50hz!

Question, will a modded PAL PS1 play NTSC games at 60Hz so?

The 50/60 hz issue is a much bigger deal on the ps1 considering how awful the frame rates are in a lot of ps1 games.

Yes no matter what console NTSC games run at 60hz while PAL games run at 50. On PS the games not the console dictates the frequency output.

It's always funny how you never notice these things back in the day...the frame rates of some older games is shocking! Perfect Dark was another game that goes really slow sometimes, but I never even noticed it until the HD version had it running at full speed.

Ended up playing Crash Bandicoot for 3 hours last night. I'd forgotten how short the game was. It might annoy me in so many ways but there's still fun to be had. Going to try for 100%!

    I'm a hypocrite!

The FPS on some older games really was oblivious till a HD remake... Kind of makes you sad v.v

It's a lot longer to go for 100%... A whole lot more controller snapping goes on too

    It's an interesting game alright.
I remember a poster getting rather "insistent" that there was a UK PAL release, something I disagreed on as there isn't one anywhere I can see on line at all, merely rumours of same.
TBH the PAL edition I have is identical to the UK/Ireland proposed release aside from the cover and manual, both of which can easily be faked.
The notion was that some copies were sent to stores before being recalled due to the games cancelled release in these islands as a result of the hyperbole by the European press, based on half cocked ideas about the game but, sadly, none based on actually playing the damn thing, or even reading the official PR material it seems.

I wonder if there's any laws in the country that if someone makes absolute lies up about your product and damages sales like it did here then would the publisher have a case against the politician. 505 gamestreet with it's supposed Mafia connections perhaps didn't want the attention.

Retro City Rampage is up on Steam for a mere 89c. Absolutely super game, very faithful to the classics and actually was originally going to run on NES code, but it just proved slightly too much of an effort.

Going to London next week, other than Retro Game Base, anything worth checking out shop wise for retro finds, maybe charity shops with a good selections or a location where's there's a few (saw some in Camden last time)

There's a cool little arcade right beside Goodge street tube station iirc. That was 2 years ago though so I'm not sure if it's still there.

Googled it, saw a video, "Goodge Street Casino arcade London closing day" but mentions one called Heart of Gaming in North Acton
The only one I saw was before was http://www.londontrocadero.com/

Heart of Gaming is the place to be for a London arcade. It's really fantastic and the owners work hard at keeping it alive. Don't know if it's open every day though, should check hours. https://www.facebook.com/TheHeartOfGaming It's a little out of the way but still easy to get to. It works like a day pass as opposed to pay to play, really cool.

Trocadero is no good anymore. It's only a shadow of what it once was really and I had only gone to it after they massively scaled it down. They had a good gaming section in the HMV there but again that was before HMV went bust and back again so they might have removed that. Don't get hopes up for it by any means, go to HoG instead.

Had no hopes for Trocadero, I know it's gone downhill already from more recent visits, I go there for shopping and pancakes instead, just said I had seen it before.
Had sent HOG a message on twitter so I can ask about opening days/times, just asked about entry fees but you answered that for me, got ahead of them lol.

Is it a new thing that Adverts charge a fee if you successfully sell your item? Comes up now even on the free listings.

Hardly? How would they charge you if using a free ad & haven't entered cc details or anything?

They said they will charge 3 euro to my registered mobile. Or there was an option to pay by card instead. Stuck up a cheap laptop there and had to agree to the charge.
Seems to only apply to anything over 30 euro.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,183 ✭✭✭✭Atavan-Halen

Is that not only if you want a premium ad or something?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,695 ✭✭✭DinoRex

Seems it's only if the item is over a €30 asking price:

    http://www.adverts.ie/successfees

That will force most people to take a priority listing which will sort of render a priority listing pointless.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,886 ✭✭✭Steve X2

Yeah, only on items over 30 euro.

Exactly at least ebay has some level of control on it.
You could just accept an offer and then sort it out in pms and then cancel the offer and just leave the listing up and viola no fees.

Yep same here, **** adverts now. Bad move I'd reckon

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 33,733 ✭✭✭✭Myrddin

Queue a raft of people making offers, then pm'ing the seller, the seller then withdraws the item (thus not making a sale in the eyes of adverts), & the sale going ahead via pm. Stupid idea to make priority ads an incentive

Edit - Actually you can't pm a seller now until the offer is accepted I think. Still, an accepted offer doesn't equate to a sale so you can still get around the fees I think

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 5,391 Mod ✭✭✭✭Optimus Prime

Its just stupid, i mean my work mobile phone is on the site so i cant have them charging that anyways. The reason adverts is so successful is because people can sell for free. Its the only reason i use it instead of Ebay, ill be using Ebay in future you get a much wider audience for your stuff too.

By adding 'success fee's, coupled with whatever paypal charge for it's use, Adverts is basically in the same league now as ebay. One has a worldwide userbase, the other, hasn't. I know which one I'll be using from now on.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 34,634 CMod ✭✭✭✭CiDeRmAn

Wow, so the monetising of Adverts is complete.
We got a feel for it when they refused to tackle the premium ads that were trying to screw people on PS4 prices before Christmas, despite having a strict policy elsewhere, and now this.
I reckon you'll see people withdrawing ads as they are sold to avoid charges.
