I loved the Sonic 3 soundtrack tbh

Not much of a fan of Sonic 3 or Sonic and Knuckles soundtracks? I couldn't say which of the 4 games was the best music wise (S&K3 is my favourite to play) just thought they would have been mentioned.

Oh definitely, I think I just found 1 & 2 more memorable as I played the hell outta those games, not so much 3 & Knuckles.

I'm the opposite, I played Sonic 3 and Knuckles combined all the time, played Sonic 2 a good bit but Sonic 1 the least amount of those 4

Beat me.. was just about to say I was sure he composed a fair bit of 3. Almost positive I read he had a hand in sonic 2 also. :D

    What? No love for this?

Who designed that title screen? It looks like the D is falling off the logo.

Anyone else miss the oddness that was games being named after hardware specs/names?

    Sonic CD, Mario 64 etc?

Sonic Blueray would have been cool :D

New Super Mario Bros. U not a recent enough example? :)

EDIT: Ah you mean specifically after the hardware features? I guess 'NSMB huge screen on the controller' didn't sound catchy enough

And the DS did it all the time, but some developers got clever and made the subtitle have the initials "D.S." so you got Castlevania Dawn of Sorrow and Advance Wars: Duel Strike.

I always remember thinking back in the N64 days that after a few years, all the titles with '64' in them would sound ridiculous.

They do, but I never thought it would be a ridiculous I'd miss! Similarly I miss the whole 'bit' tagline on consoles. You really felt like you knew what those numbers meant :D

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 51,890 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

You can thank the guy behind Earthbound, Shigesato Itoi. He came up with the 64 tagline.

Of course he never realised the problems it would cause later down the line when people can't get the name of the N64 version of Loderunner right.

There's a sad irony there that we never got EarthBound 64 :(

    Ya like the Jaguar classic

Alien Vs Predator 64 if you look really closely at some internal registers

My favourite has to be Superman 64.

That is... Superman on the C64. :P

Just came across a Snes CD/PSX proto version I've never seen before. Really polished looking.

Kind of looks like a Wii if you turn your head to the side!

Interesting the way that curved/circular design follows the whole way through from the Snes to the PS1 final pad (and beyond)

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 51,890 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

I think it's well known that Sony totally ripped off the SNES design for the PS pad. Pity they didn't rip off the saturn d-pad :)

I wouldn't say 'ripped off' more so than 'developed on'.

Seeing as the initial Playstation project was to be the Snes CD, development on the controller was well along the way at the point where ties were severed. So it was just a continuation really.

There's a great photo on page 133 here detailing all the PS1 controller prototypes :)

Interesting. Though open one day a week during normal working hours means a lot of people with disposable income (i.e. people who buy stuff) will be working when it's open. I might try run into town during lunch on thursday to have a look though.

EDIT: Just saw that they're open on Thurs-Sat, 11am-6pm...that's better :)

Worked part time there for a couple of years, great days I tell's ya

Just having a read of the new(I think) Retro Gamer magazine special (The Mega Drive/SNES Book) and they have the readers top 25 Mega Drive games. Check out number 1, I have to say I don't agree at all.

    nnab.jpg

Gunstar Heroes is at 3 and Castle of Illusion at 9. I'd have put Gunstar as top for me (maybe 2 if i was feeling in a Sonic 2 mood)and Castle of Illusion probably around maybe 5.

    Thoughts?

    This man has taste.

That article is quite recent. The problem with those popularity polls is you only ever get the popular games make it on the list. A megadrive best of list without Phantasy Star 4 isn't worth taking notice of. There was loads left out and lots of badly aged stuff like earthworm jim that made it in.

Here's the full list for those interested. No Earthworm Jim on this list, but still not the true top 25 by any measure. Still, everyone will have their own top 25 so no published list will ever make everyone happy. It's not the worst top games list I've seen to be fair.

I don't think I have to voice my opinion on the top game.
    Is Dune 2 in there?
    Or Thunderforce IV?
Oh, I see it's there, the latter anyway.
But Dune 2 is a classic.
I'd have liked to see Test Drive and Virtua Racing included too.
Whatever about the merits of the improved SoR2, putting the original and Golden Axe in there is appalling!
Why not stuff Pit Fighter and Rise of the Robots in there too! (sorry Steve!)

To be honest I'm disappointed Castlevania isn't on it when Golden Axe is.

Ah I was thinking about Aladdin, those Dave Perry games are all very similar :)

It's not a bad list in fairness, the only one I'd call mediocre is Aladdin. I'm just not interested in reading lists that are voted on by readers or created by uninformed journalists. I read retrogamer to find out about 1) games I don't know about or 2) stuff I don't know about games I already know.

Contra Hard Corp should be up there as well. Nobody bought them (and the UK press for some reason hated New Generation) so they won't be making it into any top whatever lists.

Actually keep meaning to play Hard Corp but never get around to it.
One of the 'problems' with not restricting yourself to newer consoles, is the the abundance of quality games and not having to put up with the initial drought of games that a new console seems to experience.

I would put either sonic 2 or 3 first in that megadrive list but Phantasy 4 needs to be in the top 3

Gunstar Heroes aswell anything else is debatable

Landstalker pretty good aswell i put that in the top 10

I find Super Contra a walk in the park, which will tell you how difficult I find Hard Corp :) Shattered Soldier is just as bad.

I played through the whole thing recently. Definitely not in my list. The jumps later on get infuriating!

I meant to say 'difficult enough' as in not shockingly so. In saying that I haven't past it, yet.

Has anyone got a view on the JVC X'Eye.
There's one going for cheapish in Canada so I can get it with little postage cost to myself.
