what's the deal with these ships that are being sold for crazy money? can you not get them in game when it launches or something?

Almost every ship can be bought in game. Only a small handful are rewards for early backers and can't be bought in game, but I think even those can be found or earned through other means.

One early estimate from Chris Roberts was that it would take about 60 hours game play to earn enough to buy a Constellation which IIRC is about €250.

So it should be pretty easy in game to buy an Aurora, a small challenge to buy a 300 series, a decent challenge for an Avenger class, a hard-ish challenge for a Cutlass, harder for a Hornet. Getting into mid-size ships will be tough, but doable for single players, and bigger/capitol ships will probably need groups of people (or very determined pirates).

Personally, I pledged for a Cutlass.

I have seen a few people posting on Reddit that it might be better to buy in at the bottom rung, go for a basic Aurora, and work your way up to fully experience everything the game as to offer. It's an idea that was gaining a lot of traction the last time I looked at the game in detail (2/3 months ago). And it's something that I think I'll go with too.

I've never been a huge fan of RPG-ish games, but in the ones I have liked I loved how you would start off really weak and underpowered, but slowly building up to become incredibly strong and being able to easily enemies that would have easily wiped you out earlier in the game.

You get a few bonuses by buying the early releases too, such as life time insurance

I got this game with the AMD Never settle bundle . I'm still not sure if I should bother activating the game or just sell the key. I have tried to find some decent vids on Youtube of actuall gameplay and can't really find anything that intrest's me or looks appealing.

Is this game like Destiny ,except you get to fly combat missions in the ships on the way to your destination ?.

I found the same thing. Can't find any decent footage on Twitch or Youtube.

It's more of an open MMO than Destiny. It started off as pretty much a space combat game, but they've expanded the idea to try and be an open universe where you make our fortune doing whatever you want. I don't think they're planning anything like set missions or raids or anything like that. Instead, the players themselves will pretty much populate the world and create the missions.

For example, I might hire you to escort me on a trading mission. Other players find out about it and decide a spot of piracy is in order and they attack us, but we fend them off. In the process, our ships are badly damaged and we contact other players with search & rescue vessels to come and tow us back to a space station.

There'd no levelling or anything like that. You just do what you want to do and try and make your fortune in whatever way you feel like. That's the theory behind it. It'll be interesting to see how it pans out.

It'll pan out as "team up or be sh*t on" with a few massive clans running the place and thousands of smaller clans. Soloing in an environment such as they are building might sound romantic but will only lead to frustration.

  • Registered Users Posts: 19,976 ✭✭✭✭humanji

After a while, I'd say. But they're also allowing private servers and modding, so if that pans out then people will be able to just have their mates on their servers or even just be on their own. It'll be interesting to see how much freedom the private servers actually have.

I just love the Idea of being a pirate or bounty hunter in a small/medium size ship with a few other people. Waiting on a trade route for a big fat paycheck. While dressed as a pirate and wearing an oculus rift.

Will you wear the oculus rift over one eye?

All this freedom, and everyone will just be a pirate...

Much like DayZ, Altis Life, etc.

    Kill or be killed.

Maybe. I find that games like DayZ end up like that because there is not much else to do. If you're a pirate you are not going to be able to get to a lot of places other players will go without being shot at on arrival. It will be hovering around the edges looking for scraps for most people. Which sounds awesome to me but I may be broken.

It depends on how rewarding pirating will be. What kind of ship will you need to be able to have a chance of plundering anything worth-while, and will the cost of that ship and the risk of losing it out-weight it. If it's cheap investment I can't imagine any of the even semi-decent ships's defences wouldn't be able to take care of it especially if it's being manned by a competent crew manually aiming guns.

And for smaller solo players just looking to gather a few resources to sell... I'd say it'd be pointless pirating them when you could probably do what they're doing and get the same reward without the risk of damaging your own ship or even wasting the ammunition.

That said, I'm saying this as pure speculation that the game is going to be logically balanced. And it's not like I want pirating to be completely fruitless because that would be boring, there should be some draw to pirating otherwise there'd be very little action in space. I just want it to be balanced.

This just got me thinking... you should probably choose your crew and who you work with carefully. I can imagine a few people going rogue on the bigger ships and possibly sabotaging them as they're being attacked by pirates... being secretly in-line the pirates as an elaborate plan to capture the ship or steal its resources. I wonder there'll be any first person shooting allowed in actual cockpits? Of course a basic rule of no weapons allowed on deck would solve that. Ah, the possibilities are exciting... I hope this game turns out as great as it can be.

As long as the devs take a hands off approach like they do in Eve ie if it's not a bug/exploit then it's allowed.

I can see massive organisation wars.

Once you avoid lawless space. You should be safe from pirates and vanduul Scum.

The instancing is going to limit a lot of that though. They aren't going for Eve style battle scenes (although 100 ships on grid will be still epic from a FP perspective in my opinion).

Be interesting to see how the maps pan out with sizes once they switch to 64bit

They actually added a load of new "flight modes" in the Arena Commander module. I have yet to sit down and play this patch though.

I tried to actually play it last night and everytime got a Connection lost message. Seems to be some issues with the latest patch. I did get to fly about for a about a miute at one stage before I was disconnected and it looked simply stunning. Fingers crossed another patch coming soon.

Proud owner of an Avenger here :) I actually bought a friend a ship as well, but he's just had no luck getting the game to work. I've got a hotas and I'm slowly getting better at dogfighting.

So loads of stuff this week / weekend.

It's Star Citizen's 2 year anniversary since kick starter and there is a huge sale on.

    As always though
DO I NEED TO BUY ANOTHER SHIP?
NO! Remember: we are offering these pledge ships to help fund Star Citizen’s development and because of player demand. All of these ships will be available for in-game credits in the final universe, and they are not required to start the game. The design goal is to make additional ships available that give players a different experience rather than a particular advantage when the persistent universe launches. Every sale supports expanding Star Citizen’s overall development, but none are required to gain full enjoyment from the game.

New Destroyer Class announced with some images and it's for sale at a steal of $2500 :pac:

    i8jjYW5.png

Healing Mechanics (including body dragging video) in FPS Modules and some notes on Ships

And we are up to 62 million raised and already storming towards 63 million with the anniversary sale.

    Annnnnnddd my dog tag arrived!

  • Registered Users Posts: 19,976 ✭✭✭✭humanji

I quite like the idea of the new destroyer, in that they're saying it's a kind of organisation goal where everyone has to work together to buy the base ship and then kit it out. Which will no doubt be cheaper than €2500.

Would anyone be interested in a regular Saturday evening dog fight session? The corp I'm in (carried over from Eve players and some new folks) are trying to get a weekly event going.

Around 20:00 GMT Saturday - PM me for TS details.

(and one on Wednesday @ 9pm but I don't attend those :pac: )

  • Registered Users Posts: 19,976 ✭✭✭✭humanji

I wouldn't be able to commit to sessions myself (haven't been able to play games all week :( ).

The main site has a full destcription of the Javelin now: https://robertsspaceindustries.com/comm-link/transmission/14335-Introducing-The-Javelin-Destroyer

It sounds like it'll be a lot of fun to mess around in with a crew.

This is an interesting one to me, I imagine even though it is bare of guns that it could be upgraded seriously well with various cap killers. I kind hope they don't sell out as I forsee the big groups getting them all.

  • Registered Users Posts: 19,976 ✭✭✭✭humanji

Well there's always the old fashion way of earning them in game. And by that I mean getting a competent group together and hijacking someone else's one. :D

The Drake Caterpillar also looks interesting. Not a whole lot of detail about it's capabilities, but they keep emphasising the modular aspects of it, which could make it an incredibly versatile ship.
