What is the greatest song to have come out of Ireland? For a small nation we have produced some of the finest songs in popular music history.

For example, in Rolling Stone magazine they made a list of the 500
greatest songs ever which was published in 2004. Of the 500 songs, 352 are from the United States and 117 from the United Kingdom; they are followed by Ireland with 12 entries (of which 8 were composed by U2).
Also U2 had 2 more songs added to the list in the reissue in 2010.

So which song is the greatest from this country?

    My top 3 are
    1. Sinead O'Connor - Nothing Compares To You
    2. The Stunning - Brewing Up A Storm
    3. U2 - One

    Honorable Mention:
    Mark McCabe Maniac 2000 :P

Nothing compares to you is not even in my top 5 Sinead songs, Troy for me. Best Irish song is impossible to call, possibly 20 on the short list. Today I'll say half past two and tomorrow it could be the streets of NY, sweet sixteen, one or bad.

I'm not particularly a big fan of Sinead O Connor myself. I wouldn't be in to her type of music at all but that song is an obvious exception. I just love that song.

    1. The Island - Paul Brady
    2. With or without you - U2
    3. Old Town - Phil Lynott

(Dis)honorable mention to anything by Daniel, or Richie Kavanagh.

Probably Luke Kelly singing On Raglan Road. I'd have it as our national anthem, it's such an appealing song

100% on this. Nothing comes close to Raglan Road sung by Luke Kelly

10 years ago I would have said U2, One. But now I think it's such a cheesy song, can't bring myself to listen to it I dislike it so much!

The only U2 songs I like are the crowd rousing live songs:

Put Em Under Pressure is the greatest Irish song.

    On a more serious note:
    Mundy - July
Whipping Boy - When We Were Young
    Saw Doctors - Clare Island
    The Frames - Star Star
Van Morrison - Into The Mystic

U2 - With or Without You (what an amazing piece of music. You have to see the Joshua tree recording documentary to appreciate the beauty and simplicity of edge's guitar).

when it comes to music we can be very proud of our little island.

These boys sadly never made it big.

"You're the measure of my dreams" such a great lyric and what a melody by Ireland's greatest living poet.

Need I say more without these boys U2 etc would not be on the world stage

Had to have 5 songs as hard to choose 3. This song is a classic and great fiddle playing by Steve Wickham.

Luke who is still missed had an amazing voice and this song will always be his.

Agree with this. It's most definitely up there.

I'm not singing for the future
I'm not dreaming of the past
I'm not talking of the first time
I never think about the last

My favourite song by The Irish Rovers is Lily The Pink.

  • Registered Users Posts: 18,605 ✭✭✭✭The Princess Bride

Phil Lynott's 'Old Town' is one of my favourite songs ever-just beautiful.

Aslan and 'This is' would be up there in my top 5 too.

U2's 'Unforgettable Fire' gives me goosebumps every time.

Great tune but it was written by a Scot/Australian.

bringing the Pogues and The Waterboys into the mix is a game changer. Mike Scott of The Waterboys is a Scotsman living in Ireland, I know Steve Wickham is Irish but Scott is the creative force. Shane MacGowan was born in England to Irish parents, so this asks the question can we count music by fellow musicians born abroad to parents who were Irish and are essentially 100% Irish blood. The obvious two is Noel Gallagher of Oasis then Morrissey and Johnny Marr of The Smiths

    I fall apart (Rory Gallagher)
    Bad (U2) live version.
    This is (Aslan)
