Apologies if this is in the wrong section, wasn't sure where to post it.

I need to find a spot in Dublin City or the immediate outskirts where it's possible to sit and look at the lights of the city of Dublin. The general places on the tourism sites are too far out. The more unusual the better

    Cheers

Only one comes to mind, it's the Blue Light. Nice and high and benches outside you can sit and overlook the city. Link here: http://www.pubsdirect.ie/thebluelightpub

    Hi there CleoD,

I've moved your thread from our Travel 'Things to do In ...' forum to the Dublin City forum where it would be better suited as it is localised.

    Thanks,

There's a lay by on Strand Road in Sutton from which you can park and get a great view of the city, from the city right down to Dalkey. You can also go to Red Rock, which is on the walk past the Martello Tower in Sutton.

There's a lay by near the bridge over the M50 on Harold's Grange Road/Blackglen Road in Rathfarnham/Sandyford which has a great view over the city and there's a map that points out the sites to you and some seating. Map here.

The Blue Light is also a great spot as already suggested but is quite far out.

Dalkey Hill, 3 Rock or Howth Summit.
3 Rock is the best imho, it's the highest, but the furthest out. Even with a car, it's a 30 minute walk up a steep enough hill from the top carpark.
Was up there before at night, great views.

Hellfire club. An easy enough walk up to it from the carpark and some really interesting history behind it.

The Summit car park isn't actually that good unfortunately, as the view is obscured by some hills. Shielmartin Hill and Red Rock would have unobstructed views. Some suggested spots nearby would be:

Shielmartin: Park on the road at 53°22'14.56"N 6° 5'12.14"W and go up the path for a bit.

    Red Rock: Park at 53°22'11.19"N 6° 5'5.04"W and follow path to 53°22'0.67"N 6° 5'16.18"W.

Careful though if it's dark, perhaps even bring a torch.

Another place would be a walk from Thormanby Road down the Baily Lighthouse access road: 53°21'49.99"N 6° 3'19.84"W.
