If Messi was available to Athlone town I would think Athlone should try get him but I also think Messi should stay at Barcelona over the Rod Squad

There are certain players that play in advanced positions that sometimes don't rack up impressive amounts if goals/assists but are hugely influential to their team.

For example Iniesta played as a wide playmaker for Spain in Euro 2012 and got player of the tournament despite only getting 1 assist and 0 goals. He came 3rd in the Ballon d'Or in 2010 despite only getting 1 goal and 7 assists that season. Zidane was another great advanced player who didn't have overly impressive stats.

Obviously Turan isn't on the same level as those 2, but he is of a similar ilk in terms of his influence on a game being very strong despite his goal/assist stats not necessarily showing it.
Yeah but it seems that people tend to move the goalposts when it comes to these players. I've seen Turan's name mentioned in here plenty over the past few years and he's been sold as an assist machine who plays as a playmaker as part of an attacking trio just behind Falcao.

Then when the season finishes and the numbers don't add up with regards to goals or assists the same people change his role in the team saying 'well he's actually not the kind of player who tends to create too much. He has a more specialised role in the team than simply laying on chances etc etc." Just a minor irritant to me. I'll be over it by 4 o'clock.

The rumours are that Cissokho has stalled over his wages demand (someone mentions a 5 difference), we then turned to another option, and now he's agreed a deal.

If this was us playing chicken and winning - bravo.

I never knew Aspas headbutted a player and got a four match ban!! Between Suarez, Aspas and if ye sign Costa that is one fiery front line :D

He would make much more sense than Malgerajo as competition for Enrique.

I don't get the Cissohko signing. We already have Enrique in that position and we'd be better off investing the money in the attacking third?

Its on loan so its not affecting the transfer budget hugely.

Would not expect us to be able to get the really top class strikers but
Costa is nowhere near being in the tier below top class.

Personally I don't think we should be after a striker at all, but would rather see us going, if we are looking at the attacking third of the team, after a genuine wing forward/winger of good quality or an attacking midfielder of good quality.

I think Costa would not bring enough to justify the suggested price and that other parts of the team would not be strengthened enough as a result of spending that much on a player for a part of the team where we are the least weak.

In order of importance (for me of course and not taking Suarez into account) I would want to bring in a centre back, a central midfielder and then either a wing forward/winger or an attacking midfielder (which one depends on where we play Coutinho.)

Coventry City face 15-point penalty as part of club faces liquidation

    137473532-1-522x293.jpg

Coventry City are facing a 15-point deduction after creditors rejected a deal over debts and left part of the club on the brink of liquidation.

They are still set to start the League One season at Crawley on Saturday.
Coventry City FC Ltd went into administration in March following a rent-row with Arena Coventry Limited.
It now faces liquidation after ACL, which runs the Ricoh Arena, rejected a Company Voluntary Arrangement at a creditors' meeting on Friday.
Had the CVA, a payment scheme between an ailing company and its creditors, been accepted, the club may have been able to come out of administration.

However ACL, which operates the stadium on behalf of Coventry City Council and the Alan Higgs Centre Trust, expressed its concerns over the club's agreed groundshare at Northampton's Sixfields Stadium for the next three seasons and the club's financial future, leading it to reject the CVA alongside Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs.
A Coventry club statement read: "It is with great regret that a proposed CVA has been rejected by ACL.
"It means CCFC Ltd is likely to be put into liquidation which is expected to result in a points penalty for the club going into the new season.
"The football club and the Alan Higgs Centre Trust accepted the administrator's CVA, but the City Council, through ACL, have chosen to reject it, leading to possible liquidation and the risk of a 15-point deduction.
"The club will hold urgent meetings with the Football League this afternoon to go through the next steps for the football club."
The day prior to the creditors' meeting, ACL lodged an official complaint against the Football League over the League One side's 34-mile move to Northampton.
It claimed that the Otium Entertainment Group, who recently took over the Sky Blues from previous owners Sisu whom they have links with, had no right to request the move, as its takeover of City had not been completed.
And ACL released a statement saying that it was unhappy with the proposals in the CVA put forward by Coventry CCFC Ltd joint-administrator Paul Appleton.

"This decision was based on ACL's twin aims," a statement read. "First, to keep Coventry City Football Club playing in Coventry; and second, to ensure that Coventry City Football Club is financially viable for the next few years and beyond.
"This last point is especially important given that CCFC has been the subject of a 'catastrophic insolvency' in the hands of its previous owners.
"The CVA proposals put forward by Mr Appleton simply do not address these obvious concerns. And these concerns are not only the concerns of ACL - they are the concerns of all Sky Blues supporters, and should be the central concerns of both The Football League and The Football Association.
"Mr Appleton has the ability to put forward new proposals, and we would welcome these as soon as possible."
In response to ACL's statement, Appleton said: "We do not understand the comments being made by ACL with regard to the ability to put forward new proposals. The proposals ACL required simply did not comply with the law."
Under the terms of the deal between ACL and Coventry City over the Ricoh Arena, which has been the Sky Blues' home since 2005, the club had been paying £1.2m in rent per year, and only received a limited share of the catering and parking revenues from matchdays.
Eventually, the Sky Blues' debts to ACL mounted to £1.3m leading to CCFC Ltd going into administration and the club being deducted 10 points by the Football League.
The rent row resulted in the club agreeing a three-year groundshare with Northampton, and searching for a new permanent home in the city.
But in a bid to keep the club at the Ricoh, ACL offered a reduced rent of of £150,000 in League One, rising to £400,000 if the club returns to the Championship.

    http://news.sky.com/story/1123645/coventry-football-club-goes-into-liquidation
    BBC Analysis

"As if the situation hasn't been unsettling enough for Sky Blues fans, this impending liquidation will feel like the final straw.

"In some ways it was perhaps inevitable: both sides in the row, ACL and Sisu always seemed reluctant to concede any ground in their pursuit of a solution and this is the result.

"The operational side of the club - Coventry City Holdings - are setting up urgent talks with the Football League to decide what happens next. High on the list will be the extent of any penalty, likely to be at least 15 points."

(adopts mock Steve Wright in the Afternoons tone) Hey kids! The Stevie G testimonial game is on tomorrow and God will be making an appearance along with Carra but it looks like it'll be a proper pre-season game for the most part so don't expect a parade of famous wrinkled faces except in the stands maybe.

    U-17s Milk Cup Champions.
Dominant Reds lift Milk Cup Globe

    ryankent.jpg

Liverpool U17s won the premier Milk Cup Globe on Friday afternoon after Ryan Kent's double helped them to a 2-0 win over Newcastle at the Showgrounds in Coleraine.

The Reds controlled the final from start to finish - and they made their constant pressure count early on when Kent sprung clear of the Magpies' defence in the 10th minute to curl home the opener.

Mike Garrity made wholesale changes to the side who beat Corinthians on penalties in the semi-final. Out went Harry Wilson and Sergi Canos, and in came Will Marsh and Louis Robles.

Corey Whelan and Daniel Cleary were the centre-back pairing and the duo were nothing short of superb throughout. Whelan, in particular, stroked the ball about brilliantly.

He unlocked the Newcastle back-line five times in the first half by floating a precise pass over the top for the powerful Dharius Waldron to chase. Their combination handed Alex O'Hanlon a fine chance shortly after Kent's opener, but he fired over the bar.

Before the interval, diligent work from the effervescent Kent opened up a golden opportunity for Robles, but the Scouser was caught unawares as he attempted to dig the ball out from under his feet, and he scooped his shot over the bar.

Garrity's side completely controlled the game - of that there could be no doubt. Newcastle registered few chances and they were forced to chase the ball throughout.

The Reds flew out of the blocks in the second half - Dave Roberts charged from the halfway line to the edge of the box and curled a shot at goal, which the 'keeper got a hand to and Robles was unlucky not to net on the rebound.

Newcastle were gifted one fine chance to equalise late on, when a lapse in concentration allowed the Toon to work the ball out to Dan Barlaser, who was presented with an open goal, yet skied his effort over the bar.

Then, in stoppage time, the Reds put the game to bed and grabbed the winning goal their efforts had earned.

Substitute Canos broke down the field and waited while a swarm of red shirts caught him up. Composed, the talented Spaniard intentionally missed the first man, Adam Phillips, with his weighted cross, and the ball landed perfectly for Ryan Kent to tap home at the far post.

Meanwhile, there was disappointment for Liverpool U15s as they finished fourth in the junior Milk Cup after losing out to Watford in the third-place play-off.

    Fowler as LFC Coach?
Fowler and Carra to play in Stevie game

    2237__9229__copy_(2)_of_070119-028-liverpool_training.jpg

Robbie Fowler and Jamie Carragher are set to feature for the Liverpool first team one last time during Steven Gerrard's testimonial on Saturday.

Fowler played his final game for the club against Charlton back in 2007, while Carragher called time on his 17-year playing career in May.

However, both trained with Brendan Rodgers and the squad at Melwood on Friday after being asked to feature in what otherwise is a key pre-season friendly for the Reds against Olympiacos.

The game is live on LFCTV Online. Kick-off has been moved to 12.45pm BST and our coverage starts at 11.45pm.

Rodgers said: "I spoke with Carra and obviously he had spoken with Stevie at the end of the season.

"They are very close friends and they've gone through many battles on the field together, and obviously with Stevie out injured towards the end of the season they never got the chance to play together, so it will be a nice moment for them.

"Carra will feature at some stage, as will Robbie Fowler. I love Robbie, he's a great guy and he's good to have around.

"We're obviously looking to get him involved in the football club in terms of the coaching side which I think he's got a lot to offer.

"He never left the football club maybe the way he wanted to so it's a nice opportunity for him to play in front of the crowd again and give the Kop a real round of applause.

"So, two great legends of the football club I'll welcome with open arms. They trained this morning and Carra looks like he's never been away. Robbie looks like he has been away [laughs]!"

I think a loan signing is definitely the way to go at left-back.

I'm of the opinion that Enrique is good enough but he definitely needs cover, competition and hopefully whoever we bring in has a different set of abilities to Enrique.

Does anyone remember when Enrique got a run of about 5 games playing left-wing last season. Was I the only one who thought he was surprisingly effective?!
