    Enjoy is something I won't :D

Can't get my head around the game so far, it's mainly the raft of tactical options, ya sure I know the difference between a running play and passing play and they have it simplified enough.
But the defensive portion is mind boggling(I did the skills practice but it's easier to pick a pass when you know where it's going then trying to do it when you don't even know what kind of play it is).
I just don't know who I should be controlling and what I should be doing when controlling that particular guy.

Will be hitting Youtube tomorrow to watch some defensive vids in particular :D

    Welcome mate!

I, and a lot of others, just usually control the defensive lineman on defensive plays. I find it's easier to generate pressure on the opposition quarterback when you are controlling the defensive lineman and you avoid giving up big plays from a mistake you have made such as jumping a route but missing the ball thus leaving the receiver free to jog into the end zone. Of course, controlling the secondary players such as the cornerbacks or safeties can be very high reward if you know how to do it properly (I still don't and I've been playing the game for two years now, but some people are fantastic at using them and may be able to give you better advice) however it is also very high risk.

Selecting the D-lineman and flicking the R stick to the left or right will attempt a swim move to get away from the opposition or pressing the R stick down will attempt a bull rush. Obviously the better the lineman the more effective the moves.

Here's the Madden 25 manual so you can see the different types of options:

    http://vassets.ea.com/Assets/Resources/File/madden-25-xbox-360-manual.PDF

This years edition of Madden has drawn criticism in many quarters for the difficulties in creating a pass rush so don't get frustrated if you can't seem to get much going. It's the same for everyone.

Finally, the best piece of advice I could give would be to read the below guide provided by Berty on here. It's a fantastic breakdown of every single defensive formation, when they could be used and their strengths and weaknesses. I barely knew man coverage from a blitz when I started to play Madden and Berty's breakdown is the most helpful Madden resource I have ever read. There's some helpful posts from others in that thread too.

Do you have a headset? if so jump into a friendly game with one of the regular's and they will give you plenty of pointers.

There were a few threads on here a while back explaining the basics of offense and defense.

Do you watch american football normally?

Basically the more you play the more you learn and you are better off playing friendlies with guys from here than lobby games against strangers which can be very frustrating.

No headset as its a friends Xbox and he didn't have one.

    Thanks I'll look over that.

I started a franchise on Rookie so at least I should be winning enough to keep me interested(7-0 mid 1st Rookie game), tried a pro game and it was 6-6 till the 4th and then the AI got a long range pass TD so I think that level may above me.

No, I've watched the last two super bowls and bits here and there.
I do get at least the basic concepts of a running back, QB, Wide Receiver, the downs and punts etc.

Just the structures in defence are puzzling me, I've noticed you can see what the opposition are going to run before you select your defence so I just need to learn what ones are effective for what play etc.
The tweaks before a down, I can see, but I find it harder to set more than one before the attackers run their play and not sure where best to position myself after that(in NBA it's just easier to hold onto the PG instead of making rash switches and getting caught or trying to pick a PF/C and block/rebound) I also don't know which ones I should be picking.

I have done the training games and finished those before I started, will just take me a while to get into it and understand.

When I bought NBA 2K11, I always had an interest in Basketball but just never watched, started to learn the sport through the game and I'm now through my 2nd full season watching so I understand the positions, the roles, the plays, the defence, the players.
Buying this game will probably see that happen too, I'll start to watch it a bit more as I play the game as I never disliked it, just never watched it.

Actually what started to click it for me in NBA 2K was the ''My Player'' mode so maybe I'll just start one of them, see what my team mates individually do etc instead of trying to control a full team.
