    Hi everyone !!

    I hope you're all doing well.:p
Here is my situation : I'm french, still in France but I found a job in Galway and need to find an accomodation over there very soon.
Problem is, I have absolutely no idea how nice/bad the different areas of the city are to live.
I will work at Parkmore, then I want to find something near the bus (403 or 409 if I'm not wrong), in a cute/green/pretty quiet area from which I can go run my errands without using a car and, if possible, located 30 minutes MAX walk from the city center.
What area(s) do you think would match my expectations?

Thank you soooo much in advance for your help !

Hi Nebu, try looking for apartments near the G hotel on the Dublin road, or near the Huntsman pub as that area is near the bus stop at the G which is on the 409 bus route. any further out the dublin road is student-type flatland. Failing that, try around Eyre square in the centre of town, but expect to pay more for city centre living.

    Hope this helps,

    daithi

Hi Daithi, Thank you for your recommandations.
After having explored Galway with googlemaps and many apartements with daft.ie, I think I will finally focus directly on the city-center :)

Nebu, tu as en effet intérêt à te cantonner au centre ville si tu n'as pas de voiture... Moins calme et moins vert, malheureusement ;)

    OOOhh Tu es Belge? :))

Merci pour tes conseils. En effet, meme en dehors du pb de la voiture, le centre ville sera plus pratique pour les commodités et socialiser plus facilement.
Je vais te contacter par mp si ca te ne derange pas ^^

You're going to have to compromise on some of that. "cute/green/quiet" and "within 30 mins walk of the city centre" don't really go together.

In fact cute/green/quiet and "without a car" don't really go together - unless you think of estates as cute. (ugh!)

I'd recommend Roscam, Doughiska, Renmore, Wellpark, Mervue ... if you want some green. Living in any of the, you need to either do supermarket shopping with Tesco on-line, or take a backpack with you, or take a taxi home.

The other alternative is the city centre: no green, can be loud ... but close to everything including the bus stop to work.

Don't try to organise something before you get here: it's too risky taking somewhere without seeing it. Instead, budget to go into a BnB for a week or so while you find somewhere, and once you start work ask if any of your colleagues knows anyone with a room to rent. Very likely someone can give you somewhere that is ok for a while, and then you will have time to look around at places yourself.

Yes my company will pay me a temporary lodging for the few weeks, so I will take appointments to visit apartments for when I arrive.
And the city-center will be much better and convenient I think indeed. PLus it's maybe not green but looks cute for sure !

+1 for staying in temporary accommodation when you get here.

Properties can look deceivingly good on websites but you need to see them for yourself first. If you are looking in the city centre, please keep in mind that this town is a party town and late night noise is not confined to Saturday nights.

And that late night noise is followed by early morning noise: The street sweepers start between 5am and 6:30am, depending on the day / season / where you live.

    Hi nebu,

A few nice areas in Galway city centre would be Foster Court, Cill Ard (both estates with houses/ townhouses/ apartments) Larnach (apartment complex but apartments are tiny!) and Court Seoige a newer complex so a bit pricey.
All of these areas have a nice green area and are within less than 5 minute of (the east side) Eyre Square.

I rented in Galway city centre for 8 years and never had any real problems with noise or anti-social behaviour etc.
It's a great spot and I'm sure you'll find a nice place easily enough when you get here.

Just keep an eye on http://www.daft.ie/searchrental.daft?search=1&s[cc_id]=ct2&s[a_id][0]=ga11&s[a_id_transport]=0&s[move_in_date]=0&s[furn]=0&s[search_type]=rental&s[refreshmap]=1&offset=20&limit=10&offset=0

and when you get here, check out the accommodation listing in the Galway Advertiser, our free local paper out every Thursday.

    Good luck in your search!

A 30 minute walk would encompass the majority of Galway "city" (it's a town by French standards). Although, that said, walking in Galway isn't as easy and straightforward as it would be in France due to the weather, you're just not going to want to walk in the miserable freezing rain.

I'd agree with avoiding the centre if possible, it's chaos at night. You'll be kept up with the noise.

Don't think so: I've done it from Roscam a few times, took about 1 hour 20 mins. Even allowing for me being slower than some of ye, I'd still say that anything further out than Renmore / Mervue is more than 30 mins out.

I've lived in the city-centre for six years. Wouldn't want to be on Shop St itself or Eyre Square, but there are plenty of places that are quiet-enough most of the time.

Sounds like Cladagh would be perfect for you.

Central, near your bus stops, lots of green areas, short walk to the prom, south park, its quiet, there is a supermarket nearby as well as everything else you'd ever need (2 fish mongers, lots of butchers, bars, cafes, restaurants, etc.

Cladagh is the best place in or around Galway to live by a long shot.
