The Prince William County Police (Virginia) released the following statement on the their Facebook page:

Indecent Liberties | Possession of Child Pornography – On July 1st, detectives from the Special Victims Bureau began an investigation into a child pornography case. The investigation revealed that the accused came into the Garfield District Station in Woodbridge to inquire if he had any warrants on file for child pornography. The accused allegedly received a “FBI Warning” message on his computer while viewing child pornography at his residence. The message instructed the accused to pay a fine or be subject to a criminal investigation. The accused voluntarily brought his computer to the station and, following a search, several inappropriate messages and photos of underage girls were recovered. Detectives were able to identify one of the girls as a 13 year old from Minnesota. A search warrant was obtained and executed at the home of the accused. As a result, computers and other electronic devices were seized. Following the investigation, the accused was subsequently arrested on July 23rd. The FBI message that the accused had originally received was determined to be a virus and not a legitimate message. The investigation continues.

We don't know what exactly the police have found, but this virus (aka Garda virus) is known to load child pornography on the victim's computer (usually, but not necessarily, in AppData\Local\Temp\, 1.jpg, 2.jpg, etc.).

I saw this on the rounds today. What a tit.

The other side of that however is the amount of people you see check their PCs in for a virus and some of the behaviors you see from them like you'd swear they were actually guilty of it. Granted, if our techs run across that sort of thing it gets reported. We even have a guy on staff whose FT job is DoD sysadmin so he has a tendency to look out for pretty much everything. The local storage of federal files for example is a capital no no, when people work with the government intranet its all done with remote access.

Something very similar happened in Dublin a few years ago. Gardai searched a house under warrant for drugs and found a bag with alot of drugs in it. No one was in the house at the time. Several hours later the owner/resident turned up at the station to report his house burgled. He even included the bag of drugs as one item stolen. He was then arrested for possession of the drugs and if I remember correctly convicted.

    Not just "in America" 😂
