Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. Unbelievable finish to the Las Palmas and Cordoba game with Corboba scoring in the 9th minute of injury time to get promoted. The reason that there was so much injury time was because the Las Palmas fans were coming onto the field as Las Palmas were 1-0 up. The ref obviously had to be escorted off the field as quickly as possible once Corboba scored!

Proper hipster time. Gamba Osaka won the J2 this morning after confirming promotion back to J1 a few weeks ago. Takashi Usami scored a brace in a 3-2 win over Montedio Yamagata. Since returning in the summer from a two year loan spell in Germany, he scored 18 goals in 17 league games!

Nice to see them hold up Endo and Konno jerseys since they couldn't be there after being dragged off to a meaningless friendly against Holland.
    V8ZD0BG.png

Time for another Japan update because the team I follow is doing well :pac:

So far in their first year back in the top flight, Gamba have secured the league cup and are in the final of the emperor's cup (FA Cup) against J2 promotion chasers Montedio Yamagata. In the league, they sit top of the table on goal difference over Urawa Reds after they conceded a 94th minute equaliser away to Tosu this morning. Gamba won comfortably at home.

On the final matchday next Saturday, they travel to Tokushima, who are bottom and were relegated a few months ago. They have only picked up 13 points all season.

Also relegated alongside them were Gamba's city rivals Cerezo, who are known over here these days as the side Diego Forlan plays for. Here he is earlier today joking with Cacau on the pitch after a 4-1 loss that confirmed their relegation.
    B3mmZQICMAAzGy-.jpg

He scored 7 goals this season and earned $3.5m, which is two and a half times more than the next highest earner in the league. He wasn't even in the squad today and isn't injured.

I know its an old thread but there really isn't anywhere for stuff like this and its not worthy of a thread of its own but Honved the legendary club of Puskas, Kocsis, Bozsik etc won the Hungarian title for the first time in 24 years tonight after a 1-0 win over Videoton who they were equal on points with before tonight.

Didn't they play United in a European Cup, think was 94/95? Right as I would have started remembering anything football related.

Looks like the Polish league is going down to the wire. 2 points separate the top 4 with one round of games left. First are playing fourth and second are playing third. Cillian Sheridan's team could still win the league but need the leaders Legia Warsaw to slip up

Sheridan scored a brace today to give Jagiellonia a 2-1 win and keep them in with a chance. I watched their game against Legia last Sunday and they really should have won it to overtake them for 1st. Sheridan had it in the net at one point but it was ruled out. He's doing really well in Poland.

Interesting final day in Poland next Sunday!

Despite winning the league by 5 points, Lierse were not promoted from the Belgian second tier.
The Belgian league system in general is bizarrely convoluted. Charleroi finished 6th after the regular season, and fifth after the championship group. Yet they did not get a chance to enter the Europa league playoffs, whilst the team that finished 4th in the second tier did.
Genk played an additional 11 matches in the Europa league qualifying stage, only to lose a one off game away to Oostende. Oostende only had to play one qualifying match despite only finishing two points ahead of Genk.

A lot of Eastern European leagues seem to have gone for the Championship/European qualification/Relegation splits too. It wrecks my head to look at the tables. I can understand the idea that it makes it more interesting (though I don't think this actually happens) and, in a way, it does show that the team who wins the title are actually beating the top teams on their way as they play them more often, but it just seems so unnecessarily complicated.

What's the point in trying during the season if mostly it comes down to the playoffs? It's even worse in some of the South American leagues. For example, in Colombia Atlético Nacional finished top in the Apertura, 20 points clear of the last play-off postion, 8th. Yet they both have a more or less equal chance of winning in the playoffs. 1st seed doesnt even play 8th in the quarter final. They do have the second legs at home till the end though. Scant reward for a runaway league succes IMO. Just a different way they do their football I suppose. We'd consider a straight league format the best way to decide the best team.

    Colombian league

They play a lot of games too. Nacional played 84 games in 2016  (including a lot of midweek games), although the season runs from the end of January to mid December. It would have been 86 but for the Chapacoense plane crash.

It's crazy to think how much control a gangster like Mamic has over a world famous football player that he is willing to lie under oath for him and continue to give him a percentage of his salary to this day.

I'm sure he's continuing to do it to protect any family he has in Croatia though.

Loven from Liverpool is next up to lie for him in court.

As an Antwerp fan: Yeeeesssss :D

I love that they were so upset about it.
    'But, but... we were champions!'

Maybe if their club hadn't voted for the reforms to get some quick cash.
Fantastic end to the season though, all they needed to qualify for the play off to get promoted was get a result against Roeselare, while we had to win at home in the last game and hope they drop points. Their opponents equalised in the 85th minute and we got a penalty in the 88th minute.

That Nacional might lose to Cali hurts my head. They finished 19 points ahead of them. The gap from Cali (6th) to the bottom team is 12 points...

Dont know but maybe the fact they played 82 matches from july 1st 2016 till today might have something to do with it. That includes matches Copa Libertadores, Copa Sudamericana and WC for teams so a bit of travelling was included too.
And of course, it should have been 84.

    Cali had 61.

I'm confused. How has he changed allegiances?

I understand from a quick Google that French Guiana and Martinique are Overseas Departments of France, therefore their citizens are French and are eligible in the context of football to represent the mother country in Europe.

This doesn't explain to me how he can change?

Like an ROI player can't decide after playing a competitive game for ROI to change to be a NI player.

    Am I missing something obvious?

Saint-Martin, French Guiana, Martinique and Guadeloupe do not have FIFA membership although they belong to CONCACAF.  They can play in the Caribbean Cup and Gold Cup but cannot enter FIFA World Cup Qualification or the Confed Cup.

I guess he can play for a non-FIFA team.

    That explains it.

The FIFA code on their wiki page threw me when I considered them not having membership but after clicking on it it says non-member countries are assigned a code too.

Getafe are on the way back from the 2nd division after edging out another old boy, Tenerife 3-2 over 2 legs.
But did you see what happened Cadiz versus Tenerife in the semi-final of the play off?
Cadiz won the first game 1-0. Tenerife won the 2nd leg 1-0. So it went to extra time.
    Extra time stayed the same.
At the end of 120 minutes, Tenerife were awarded the win because they had more 2 points in the league.
I found this a bit weird, arent the play offs supposed to be a clean slate?

Not in Italy. The team with the highest league position goes through if its a draw after extra time in the second leg. Must be the same in Spain.

I actually think that is much fairer than a decision by away goals or penalties.

In Holland Utrecht finished 12 points above AZ and in the EL play offs had a complete off day at AZ, 3-0
Managed to pull it back at home but only after penalties.
I would have been ok with the 3-0 at 90 mins and Utrecht winning the tie because of the 12 points lead in the league.

Left Curacao before starting at PSG already.

But what he started there, getting Dutch players with Antillean roots playing for them, is still going on so it isnt that much of a surprise the improved so much in such a short time.

In 2007, Jocelyn Angloma helped Guadeloupe reach the semifinals of the Gold Cup.  Angloma previously played for France.  CONCACAF recently changed the eligibility rules to match FIFA's so Malouda would be ineligible in Gold Cup despite playing in the Caribbean Cup.  If he plays the match would be forfeited.

Canada had a hard fought 4-2 win over French Guiana.  French Guiana decided to play Malouda in their second game against Honduras. The game ended 0-0.  The match will most likely be awarded 3-0 to Honduras.
