Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

But Mary Lou is not sitting in Stormont, that is Michelle O’Neill. Would he ask Michelle about our hospital trolley crisis, our homeless? No he wouldn’t, he would ask about NI politics. Pat should have concentrated on the problems in the republic instead of going on and on about Paul Quinn’s death 13 years ago and other deaths attributed to the IRA. Do you honestly think anyone in the republic cares a jot about that young lad and any others that get caught up in the mess up there. Most didn’t even know who he was and had to google his name.

If SF have people in the north who think that there is a particular way to do business and that those people are still key strategists for the elected politicians to the point of it even being suggested that they direct policy, then damn straight it is a relevant point.

If SF have people in the north who think that there is a particular way to do business and that those people are still key strategists for the elected politicians to the point of it even being suggested that they direct policy, then damn straight it is a relevant point.

Exactly, SF only revere republicanism when it suits and claim to be the only all Ireland party. Then suddenly when challenged on the more unpalatable aspects of republicanism. There are comments like Mary Lou said on NT "I am from Dublin there is an election in the ROI not NI"

Ironically it is almost as if SF become 'partitionist' when it suits thier agenda.

The major difference is most parties in the island do not have a dual strategy one for NI and one for the ROI. One is a softer more 'southern' one which is republican lite all smiles. Going on about houses, taxing the rich.

    image.jpg

The other is the style used by SF in NI pandering to the hardline republicans or naive rich american groups which fund the IRA.

Mary Lou with the banner in NY March of 2019:

    image.jpg

Michelle O'Neill carrying the coffin of Annie Cahill republican and former wife of IRA leader Joe Cahill (2018 only two years ago)

It is because of such duplicity that there a healthy dose of dubiousness about SF. If they moved away from thier panto beret politics they would do far better.
They should be honest and open get everything out there. But no, they only back down when thier credibility takes a hit like on the Quinn issue.
It is the same tried and tested game with them, ask a question on a victim of republican related violence of an innocent and the response is always we could all name victims etc etc. Most of the time they have already tried to discredit any victim of repulibicanism with words like criminality etc to give thier 'comrade' a keep out of jail clause.

But at the same time SF glorify mindless republicanism to the working class disenfranchised, and the rich yanks. Adds a great mystic for them.

They have to chose which way they want to go once and for all. Not pick and chose as it suits a jurisdiction or demographic. It is really cynical politics. And this dual strategy really tarnishes ordinary decent hard working ROI members of SF as a result. In my opinion.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

No Mary Lou or senior Shinner on? If Greens or Social Democrats had spectacularly won their leaders would definitely be on, poor show Pat.

I was hoping he would have her on again. I didn't vote SF but now they have 20 plus percent. But the problem is there is nearly 50% between FF, FG, and Labour that said they would not form a government with SF. There will have to be u-turns for that to happen.
I assume that would be Pat's opening salvo as well if he had her back on.

Its the most historic election in 100 years the whole programme should have being about it. Hes gone down in my estimation

    Not so sure about that.
It could turn out to be but right now it is most significant for the kicking FF/FG got as opposed to people seeing SF as someone who can do things differently.
I think this because of low profile SF candidates topping or coming close to topping poles around the country.
Violet-Anne Wynne topping the poll for first several number of counts in Clare for example after only committing to run 3 weeks ago.

SF, FF and the Greens will be the next government, SF and the Greens will force change, got to be a good thing, ff/fg coalition will lead to an outright SF win in next election.

Not much chance of collation between FF and SF with Michael Martin in charge.
It will be interesting if the Greens get in how people will react to more taxes.

Who do you think or want to be next government so?

When I voted in the GE -
I voted FG (first time FG voter Bruton only not Noone!), Green, Labour, SD in the hope that they would make up the numbers - a nice mix of centre left and centre right. Obviously that will not happen now.

I would never vote FF especially because they drove us towards the crash.
As for SF I view them as hypocrites, inconsistent both sides of the border, and untrustworthy.
Years ago I would have voted Labour, but they have lost thier way big style

So who do think will be next gov? Ff/sf/greens most likely

It looks that way - but for that to happen FF would have to dump MM. And the FF base would have to be talked into going into coalition with SF.

Logically, it should because if there was another election quickly SF could get even more seats. Poor Pat Kenny would be boarding up his windows! :D

Mary Harney when asked about a particularly trying day; 'The worst day in government is better than the best day in opposition'.

Charlie Haughey when reminded he was on the recorded about FF ruling out a coalition; 'FF are on the record for saying they would not go in to Dail Eireann'.

Micheal Martin will pivot to engaging with SF without breaking a sweat I suspect.

Will Pat Kenny be giving notice on when he will have Mary Lou on again?
It should be great radio at the very least.

She’s really “plugging”, the late, Seamus Mallon’s book. Was quoting from it last night and again this morning.

I turned it off I hate coffee. The coffee snobbery stuff makes me laugh. It is only a drink! The same stuff is not said about tea is it? I don't really drink that either.

    As long it’s Barry’s it’s fine.

I like coffee, but I don't get the coffee aficionados. To be fair, I'm sure they wouldn't get the stuff I'm into, different stroke for different folks.

But the coffee lad was hard to listen to. When he said it was akin to a €1,000 euro bottle of wine I thought to myself:

"Ah yes, I was a bit lost there, but now that you've related it to something I understand I'm with you. Sure I was only saying to herself the other day, over a bottle of Chateau Margaux and a spice bag, that I didn't get the coffee craze"

The same stuff is not said about tea is it? I don't really drink that either.

For people who are into their tea, yes. Just that there are far fewer people really into different teas.

To paraphrase a quote on abstract art ... "A product of the untalented sold by the unprincipled to the utterly bewildered". ;)

I just realised there is a tie in between the SF rise and the coffee angle.

Last year there was a protest over the closure of Caifé na Gaeilge in NUI Galway

    https://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:5KK8heUPQHUJ:https://www.irishtimes.com/student-hub/students-protest-closure-of-nui-galway-s-caif%25C3%25A9-na-gaeilge-1.4063919+&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=ie

The real amusing bit for me was the chant the protesters had a great chant -

    tiocfaidh ár latte :D

They have a sign of it up on the falls road in Belfast as well.

I bloody love coffee, but the snobbery craic is comical.

Not least because, and I say this as a coffee addict, more often than not an espresso from a specialist barista place is gross.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,619 ✭✭✭✭Arghus

Coffee is great, but all the crap about is outrageous. I've got better tasting cups from petrol station shops than from ultra wanky coffee places.

As long as it doesn't taste burnt - which it often can, despite coming from "baristas" who supposedly know what they are doing - or too watery, then it's a-okay 95% of the time.

People who buy into the nonsense are complete ejits.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,106 ✭✭✭Technocentral

Disagree, I love craft beer and speciality coffee, you get what you pay for like wine.
