Listening to John 'multi-pensions' Bruton talking about austerity is a bit like listening to Wayne Rooney discussing the Booker Prize Shortlist.

Dear gods the deluded loon doesn't even know what got us in this state ! "we" didn't borrow the money . The banks did to engage in unsustainable lending . The gov taxed that alright but didn't look for the initial cash itself ! Course this lad sees no difference between big banking n the country . He and his ALWAYS ran things for them .

Thank Christ he n suds r gone

I see David McWilliams will be covering Pat's Show for two weeks ...
Morning, I am going to "stand in" for Pat Kenny on Newstalk when he's on hols for two weeks from Monday week. Should be interesting. Its been ten years almost to the day since I was last in the Newstalk hot seat - God time does fly! Always loved doing radio, so this should be fun. What topics would you like covered??

Good to see him back on Newstalk. I think he presented a handful of weekend shows before the last General Election, but it's a long time since he was doing the Breakfast programme.

I'd recommend having something you enjoy rather than something you don't.

Who, in their right mind, thought it was a good idea to get David McWilliams to fill in for Pat??? He's painful to listen to, painful.

He spends soooo .....long.....carefully......formulating and......crafting every......word and.......... phrase of a question which he......... half answers with some....... insightful comment and.........background ........ and context, not to forget ........... quotations ..........it becomes.............painful and.......... let me just say ........... tedious............well maybe not tedious more............rambling and.............increasingly........ lengthy...........that you have to........... pity......... the person.............or persons...........he is interviewing........ as they sit there............. wondering what the.........hell the............insightful and............. intelligent.......question....... is going to be.

I had visions of Fergus Finlay sitting there putting little plaits in his chin-wig waiting for David to get the the end of each question.....

ah the irony of a catholic priest claiming their rights under the irish constitution were breached yet their very quick to hide behind cannon law when it suits in relation to paedophile priests

I am a big fan of David McWilliams as a commentator and as a host, while i may disagree with him on certain issues, he often provides a view point not in sync with the normal lazy media generic narrative which is refreshing
It is good to see /hear him back on newstalk

I'm also a big fan of him as a commentator and liked his books and pre-recorded TV shows. But he drives me nuts as a host.

Regardless both these need to be considered from both points of view. Certainly we should have threatened to not to pay bond holders to get a better deal, and looked at leaving the euro as an option if we didnt get a deal.

McWilliams at least asks questions from an economics background. And also uses many examples of policies in europe which often the bland sameness other presenters ask.

It was his idea to pay the bondholders,he was advising The Government.

I thought it was the bank guarantee which he suggested to Brian Lenihan.
and not the paying all the bond holders.

He certainly advocated "burning the bond-holders".

PK is a tough act to follow. I think he did quite well today. Better than some Sean O'R interviews, easily as good as other 'established' radio presenters.
He doesn't always seem disinterested or objective but that's a common criticism I have listening to radio interviews.

SOR has proved better than i would have suspected.
PK it is easy to see how he enhances the newstalk stable, but I also like DMcW and think he should be used more by the station, as should marc coleman whose show was replaced by the bland light entertainment of tom dunne.

... and shouts down anyone on his panel who doesn't agree with him and who is an absolutely woeful presenter.

Week-one over for McWilliams. What does anyone reckon of his performance?

Pot.. Kettle... We do set high standards. Blackness all round here. :P

He sounds to me a bit like Matt Cooper with a brain. I wish we had more of him.

"Women don't have time to even acquire a husband". Last time I checked I was not an object to be acquired. I certainly don't feel acquired by my wife and therefore her property.

Could you imagine the outrage if a man said "Men don't have time to even acquire a wife". If the genders were reversed in this topic they would have cut to an ad break and the sexist man would be escorted from the building and thrown to the wolfpack in tomorrow's newspapers.
