I tried once and fail miserably.

But a pal of my manage to, he's told me he stop using the internet for two weeks FOR a dare to and succeeded, he felt happier when he wasn't using the internet and decided to get rid of his laptop/computer and even got a cheap pay as you go mobile phone!

It's necessary for my job, but for personal use yes absolutely. I've done it before, plenty of times.

    why not?

Considering as I'm 43 and all my childhood was spent mostly without computers except at the end ( Horace goes Skiing, Manic Miner and the internet so slow it wasnt worth it) yes I could do it.

I only got a smart phone about 6 months ago.

I dont have a Facebook account . I dont really use Twitter etc

If I go on holidays I dont document everything I just enjoy myself and you know something you feel better for it. In some ways the computer and the internet is a waste of space.

I could live without the Internet, but I would not choose to live without it.

Social life is practically non existent so I need the Internet . . . Ok?

Of course I could live without it, but I was a latecomer to the Internet and I've only had it five years.

Before then I used library computers and when I got the Internet, there was no going back.
It's so useful for all sorts of things and I wouldn't choose to live without it.

I've cut back on a lot of things in the past year..switching from billed utilities to pay-as-you-go, switching supermarkets, cutting back on a lot..but I won't choose to stop my Internet connection because the pro's outweigh the cons.

Hell no, it makes life so much easier

I COULD live without it but i just dont want to. If i was forced to do it, it would get me out of the house more, see more people and be more self reliant but as it is I just spend far too much time on it browsing stupid stuff. It is handy for bills, holidays and shopping though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,251 ✭✭✭Pang

    Definitely not. It's too useful.

I'd be lost without my smartphone. Some of the applications have come in so handy a number of times.

I just download enough movies before going offline.

Well, I managed without it until 1996...
It's a fantastic thing though, can't really see myself without it ever.

    Fun fact, it's really small

Before I started using computers at all I could have gone my entire life without knowing any better, but since technology is integrated into pretty much every hour of my life right now I think it's safe to say I would not & could not stop using it.

Interesting sort of thing to try, even temporarily. One of the Verge writers Paul Miller stayed offline for a year last year. And now he's more addicted than ever

No. Then I would have to go interact with real people like in the before time. Do they still play Ace of Base in shops?

No way. Was just thinking what a crazy age we live now. I must have heard part of a tune from 10 odd years ago in passing recently and couldnt remember for the life of me what it was. So I put the one line I knew into google - Boom. Case closed. Im outta love by Anastacia! It just brought me back to a great summer I had in '01. Onto youtube - watch the video. Ah memories.
If this was 1993, Id have to mention it to someone else to find out what the song was, would have had to have bought a single or album to listen to it now, and certainly wouldnt see the video unless it appeared by chance on Mtv. On top of all that, with the advent of Twitter, I could send a tweet about all this to Anastacia herself and might even get a reply from the writer of the song.

Im glad Im of an age to actually appreciate how mad this all is! Viva T'internet.

It's possible but I wouldn't be able to have the same life as I have now. They only way I could see myself completely without internet is if I'm homeless and even then I'm sure I'd find a way to spend some time on there.

Yes, when I'm out with friends and all they can talk about is social media it makes me glad I'm not as into it nearly as much as they are, some of them are beyond help.

If you talk about Facebook in the pub you buy the next round, no exceptions!

    I've been connected since 1996.

I've been toying with the idea of cutting my usage down to bare bones. Peoples ****ty opinions and bull**** attitudes really get me down. Worse on here when I know I most likely share a country and polling booth with some of the nonsense.

You can do more on the internet than read forum sites you know.

Jasus no. I need the internet to meet women. I don't know where I'd be without my Plenty Of Fish account.

They do, on a loop. One of the worst days of my life having to set foot in that shop. Never again.

I'll put it quite simply, someone asked me once would I rather give up the Internet or food, I would give up food, I know that sounds ridiculous but I love the Internet, I am never bored when I have an Internet connection. I had to babysit in a house where I had no Internet connection before, I was there for over 24 hours and all I wanted to do that entire time was leave, I even tried walking to the shop to see if I could get some coverage, thought I was goin to loose my mind.

I went a year and hope to again.
I don't own a smartphone and have no plan to get one.

I can't be the only one that finds it utterly depressing that the majority of people are connected to the internet in some shape or form almost 24/7?

Ok, it can be a useful tool to share things with friends on occasions, but i find that shared moments with people now lose their value somewhat when people are sharing bloody near everything with everyone they know most of the time.
Remember how you could have a great time with a small group of mates, and it'd be remembered only by the few who were there.
I guess it's because I'm more introverted than majority of people I know that I don't see the point in sharing so much.

I often wonder where this 'always on' thing will eventually lead us.

this image sums up my feelings pretty well.

Nope, it's of way more use to me than, say, my spleen.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,580 ✭✭✭Splendour

I obviously use internet (else I wouldn't be posting here!) but I can just as escape easily live without it. I have zero interest in having a Smartphone and am sick of people telling me if I had one I'd love it.I don't feel the need to be connected to the internet every minute of my life.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,716 ✭✭✭✭Galwayguy35

Yes I could, I had no internet at all up until 4 years ago, it's handy but would be no big deal if I had to get rid of it.

Its like the time I tried being a vegetarian. It lasted a day.

I'd be lost without the internet.

10 appendixes (appendice?), a gallbladder and both little toes!

I could live without it, although I don't want to. I couldn't work without it though.

Only today I came within a few seconds of closing my Boards account. I don't really use the internet for much any more, it wastes too much real life time. Good for reference/DIY etc, crap for real life.

I could do this for ages if I had enough books to keep me going.
