Thanks Owryan. So what rifle/rifles could have fired it? Presumably used by the Irish Army?

Within the DF both the FN and the GPMG fired the 7.62 calibre rounds . The FN was around from the 60s to 2002 i think . Cant rem when the GPMG was introduced but its still with us .

To be honest they are more likely to be the culprits rather than some "subversive" outfit, from what i ve read there were v few 7.62 calibre weapons used by the provos before the early 80's.

The provos might have stolen a few British SLR rifles which were the semiautomatic version of the fully automatic FN.

After arms shipments from Libya the provos got their hands on Kalashnikov rifles which use the 7.62mmX39mm round.

This is a picture of a 7.62mm NATO compared to the Kalashnikov round.

    Thanks Tac.

The date is/should be on the headstamp?

Yup. Usually an abbreviated date, as shown in that useful post above that shows the difference between commercial and NATO ammunition.

Sometimes there is a date code, in which case, you're on your own, as different countries use different date codes.
