    Ever play Magical Drop II?

Easy to pick up, everyone always loves it and can get crazy fast and competitive.

Nope it's not. I can see why you would think that though.

In bust a move you're firing bubble things to get three together.

In magical drop, your little dude at the bottom collects them and then fires them up (to try and get three or more)

It might look similar but it's a totally different game mechanic and plays very differently. Much faster than Bust A Move/Puzzle Bobble.

Oh yeah now i remember, did not play MDrop for a while.

Either way Im game if u have this on Thursday.

Im thinking its going to be a Dreamcast game. Just cause the spot for tournaments is where I put the dreamcast. And the TV is too heavy to move.

    ALSO.

Folks, all this weekend we will be collecting old mobile phones in aid of Autism Ireland. If you have a few doing the rounds in your house please please please bring them in and give them in behind the bar so we can help out a kid in need.

Have you got Red Dog on dreamcast? This is THE ultimate 4 player game IMO ;) Takes a while to get used to the controls, but boy, is it ****ing awesome once you grasp it.

Good fun again tonight. Had an impromptu SF2 on SNES tournament.
New rule, tournaments will not be announced before the event. Just to make things interesting.
I'm not around for the next 2 weeks as I'm in Poland but I'm leaving you in the quasi capable hands of Poliver and Boxface. They will look after you.
Hope you gang can make it out next week.

    Great evening yet again.

Street Fighter 3 3rd Strike and Tekken 2 made my day :> (damn that dreamcast d-pad, give me ps2 gamepad anyday).

I need to start negotiating with waifu to make it a regular monthly outing.

Great night, less people than before but still loads of fun. Also, good position of the retropolis table :)

I'm still rooting for a Street Fighter 3 Tournament. Or Powerstone :)

So we are taking a break for this month then we return with our new monthly spot on November 14th. more consoles, more stalls, more everything.

I'm gonna make a suggestion and it may not be popular but genuinely I'm saying it for your own good :)

There was a saying in the pro wrestling industry that there's no such thing as a good suprise. The thinking behind it was this: There's no actual gain in holding a suprise at an event. There's never a draw that's worth more when people don't know about it. If something is in anyway a draw, you need people to hear about it to want to come.

The people who were going to come anyway will come regardless of a suprise tournament of any given game- however you lose the people who might only come if they knew a game they want to play was on a given night, who might then become regulars.

    Just something to think about.

    You're just all conflicted Doom
After your pitiful performance on the first night in the tourney followed by your Retropolis enabled bliss with those NTSC/J SF purchases! ;)

Doom is absolutely right, I went to the first three weeks out of the four this event was running.
    1. Announced tournament, freebies from gPotato, drink sponsorship and Retropolis: Great attendance
    2. No-announced tournament, drink sponsorship and Retropolis: Good attendance
    3. No announcements of any kind, no drink sponsorship, no retropolis: About six people. Four of them were personally invited by me due to how fun I thought the first two weeks were. I ended up giving embarrased apologies and bringing everyone back to my flat for alcohol and games; since they only came because I asked them out and I felt guilty.
    4. No announcements: didn't attend, definitely didn't invite any friends out

The first night got a favourable write-up from the vilified "fightsticks crowd": http://randomselect.ie/index.php/2013/09/17/gaming-thomas-house-in-september

That might just be down to how frequent they are though. The first night is a novelty but doing it every night of the week can get tiring. I'd say attendence would be up if it's spaced out, once a month might be a good starting point but I'd probably personally have a longer gap.

It was once a week, on Thursdays.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,638 ✭✭✭bombidol

The biggest problem was that I was around for the first 2 weeks of it, then I was away on holiday. So I had to leave the running of the night up to a group of friends who, being honest, arent promoters in any way shape or form.
We have a over a month to get this event back up to speed with its new monthly slot. Thats loads of time, and I have mega plans in effect at the moment for it.

In my (not inconsiderable at this point) experience, 1 month to 6 weeks is about right for a gaming event. At 1 month people get a bit lax about attending (I'll just go next month...), over 6 weeks other people start complaining they'd like more. Balancing act.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 332 ✭✭Simon_K

yeah, around 4 weeks seems optimal IMO. personally I wouldn't mind it being every week though ;)

Gonna actually disagree with Doom here, because he's looking at things from the perspective of "Building a community around a shared hobby of regular attendees". With the ultimate goal being strong community bonds and high attendance if and when there is an event.

Since the Thomas House is a pub, and therefore a business, I assume its primary goal is just to make profit, so it wants as big of a slice of the "People out drinking in Dublin" pie as it can get. While it's good to build a regular crowd, I assume they don't care who attends, as long as numbers are high and people are paying.

I'm not a huge drinker myself, but I understand people tradionally do it more often than once every six weeks.

Since I live close by, I'd be happy to attend every week if there was an event running with effort and planning behind it.

Maybe every two weeks would be a nice sweet spot if you wanted to give it an "eventy" feel.

I'd attend every week even if there was no tournament - place is awesome, lots of friendly people etc. etc... The only problem for me is the attendance.

First week was a blast, second week was still good, but the following weeks it was <10 people so there wasn't much activity around the consoles.

I suppose tournaments announced some time before will probably help with the attendance, but I think you need some more exposure.

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 25,872 Mod ✭✭✭✭Doctor DooM

Trust me, if you're going to run a gaming event weekly, it doesn't matter what you do, numbers will dwindle because it will just become normal.

Unless you can literally think of something new and amazing every week.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,638 ✭✭✭bombidol

There seems to be some confusion. This event was run every week for one month. This was a tester month for me to gauge the popularity of a repeat event. I am a promoter by trade. I've worked for Whelans, The Mercantile, Fibbers, The Grand Social and god knows how many other venues and groups. Getting people into buildings is what I do for a living.
Now I own the Thomas House so its part of my job to get bodies in there. Yes, making a profit is the number one priority of the pub. As it is the number one priority of EVERY business.
I am a gamer, I love games. Old, new and in the middle. This was my baby from the get go. I collected TVs all over the city for months leading up to it. I spent thousands on equipment, consoles and games to get it up and running. As as said months ago, the event is now monthly. And will continue as long as people are interested.
I got some new TVs today and a few new games last week. As I said last month, I need people to get involved in this and help out. I need people to run tournaments and help with the promotion end of it.
Pushing out an event like this is a massive ordeal and im up to my eyes with the other couple of hundred events im juggling every quarter. So if anyone wants to get involved, please get in contact.

Disappointing attendance last week so I am shelving this until next year. I'll look at the situation when the weather starts getting a bit more favorable. There may be a few events when I'll set up a console or two but as it stands it takes almost a day to rig out the whole room and when the numbers are so low I cant justify it.

If u want to do anything 12.12 or 19.12, I can be there, bring PS2 + 4 gamepads, help out and stay till last bus.

You organise these gaming events in The Thomas House? I live 5 minutes from there. If you were ever having a Tekken sesh, I'd be up for that. I used to be a beastly player. I stopped playing Tekken about 3 years ago though so I'm mad rusty. Here's a vid from Quirkeys from a tourney I held about 4 years ago or so, I ended up winning the whole thing in the end. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T7i0z8wK7yI

Yooooo, there's an active TTT2 scene now. We have casuals at the XGC on Liffey Street most Saturdays, there's about 7-8 of us. Definitely should check it out. We're definitely interested in having more players, and we don't have a Marduk so we definitely could use a good player for him for matchup exp :D
