What to put under a white thorn hedge?

I have a nice wild hedge outside my kitchen window. It is stands on a small angled mound of earth that is higher than the lawn. All that grows under it are nettles, thistles and weeds. I was wonder how I would go about planting some sort of wild flowers or something that would be low maintenance. I don't know much about gardening. Any advice much appreciated.

How about some native bluebells? Easily obtainable from either Irish suppliers or from bulb growers in the UK.

You could also pick up some honeysuckle and allow it to weave through the hedge, giving you great flowers and scents at this time of year as well as fall berries.
