Turn off your speakers. No sound to build tension can work in a movie but I cant see it working for a game where you spend all your time in space.

Eh? Not what I meant. I want to hear what I would hear. My ship controls beeping, indicating laser has been fired etc. I don't need to hear boom on top of that when something blows up a mile away. Anyway just a thought but thanks for the helpful suggestion.

Its good if you have surround sound and something blows up behind you.

Is this a really complex game to get into?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,014 ✭✭✭Baked.noodle

X3 could get fairly head wreaking. The game experience goes from one mission to the next, but after a while your setting up factories and haulage and escorts. It gets deep as the engine could be manipulated with scripts, so you could control loads of aspects of the game. You can pick it up and run, but there will probably be plenty of depth to the game play.

I think they've gone out of their way with this one to make it more user friendly. X3 had an insane learning curve at times, and meant that you pretty much had to watch youtube video tutorials to figure out how to use certain aspects. Apparently this one is trying to keep the complexity, but making it easier to understand and also allow more casual play. Hopefully they'll pull it off. I know I should wait for a review, but I'm an idiot, so will probably pick it up later.

    Same here

    That 's 2 "idiots" then ...

Feedback from people who played it already would be highly appreciated

    On sale...

Well there are people streaming it on Twitch which is interesting to watch although it may just make you want to buy it even more... D:

Loads of people complaining on the steam forum with different issues ... I'll let them fix it first before i will buy (rage o meter is full after BF4)

  • Registered Users Posts: 19,976 ✭✭✭✭humanji

Are the issues widespread? I was watching a couple of the twitch streams and there were a few minor bugs, but nothing game breaking that I saw.

Widespread enough to crash their website

Ill give it a few days ... Maybe until after the first patch

According to it's Steam page, there is only single player with achievements. Pity.

It's definitely a good thing that its not an MMORPG

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,447 ✭✭✭Calhoun

I bought it, haven't had time to play it yet but those that are thinking of buying it i would say its a safe bet.

Ego soft are a good developer and from my experience are really well connected with the community of gamers who play their games. They are kinda like blizzard in a way as they allow heavy modding and conversions on their games and in turn they implement some of those into their releases.

For this alone i purchased the game.

Yeah lots of people looking for their money back. There are no reviews up which always make me nervous before buying.

I don't recall any of the xgames being great on release. The scope of the game is just so huge and as in the past it's often user mods/scripts that add a lot of functionality to the game. I'd wonder if the people asking for the money back had played any of the xgames before or were they expecting some sort of pewpew space action game.

Have you played it, is it any good?

Nope, like someone else said earlier I'll be waiting until a couple of inevitable patches are released and I'd like to see a couple of reviews.

Id love to give it a go

So iv played about 2 and half hours so far and im trying to still decide my opinion on it.

First off, this is probably the most "grand" game you ll ever play so far, just the scale of everything is just crazy, docking at a station and seeing some of these massive freighters go around is crazy. The city stations are incredible and the actual moving parts to a lot of the sections is really something else.

However flying just doesn't feel like the flying you would expect, it still feels very hovery and it's my main gripe with the game.

But hey it's made me play the game for 2hrs or so which is something none of the other X games really got me doing. Ill imagine it ll get a lot of nasty things said to it, I don#t even want to think about what the cesspit of gaming (Steam forums) are saying about it right now.

I think it ll be a very good game down the line.

    Some screenshots.

Yeah, I'd agree with you there. I've only played about half an hour at the moment, but it's quite staggering how epic it feels. I'm still getting to grips with some aspects of it. There's a bizarre smalltalk mini-game that I'm not sure if it's some sort of futuristic equivalent of sex. I haven't been given any info as to what I'm doing with it, and the bizarre replies from the NPC's are creepily mechanical ("Oh yes, I agree. This is quite stimulating. We can continue this if you like" for example).

It still gets me that as beautiful space is in this game, the character models are just awful. They've put so much detail into everything else, I just don't get why they stopped before making the people look anything other than something that belongs in a 90's game. And I don't think the voice acting can really qualify as acting.

But other than that, I'm really enjoying it. Haven't had any bugs yet.

One thing I will warn about, though, is when you start playing you'll see these pale green streaks across space. I decided to fly through one, thinking it was just some sort of nebula or planetary ring type feature. It turns out they're the shipping lanes that shoot you across the galaxy. Before I knew it, the station that was 8km away was now 250km away. So basically, don't fly into anything just to see what happens!

What kind of joy stick you guys using? seems to be a pain in the ass to setup my attack 3.

  • Registered Users Posts: 19,976 ✭✭✭✭humanji

I'm using mouse and keyboard. It seems optimised for it. And there's a dialogue system that seems optimised for joypad. It's a bit odd, really. I've now come across a weird bug where the controls have gone wonky. It's like there's an invisible box in the centre of the screen. When I move the mouse pointer within the boundaries of the box, the camera moves. But once I leave the confines of that box, the camera no longer moves. It's made the game unplayable. I've restarted and it went back to normal, but later happened again.

I think the general consensus is right, that similar to other x-games, it's a bit of a playable mess. In a years time I'd say that with all the patching and user mods, this will be a mind blowing game. For people who've been really looking forward to this, I'd say that you should hold off buying until you either have money to burn or that they sorted a large amount of the bugs.

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,447 ✭✭✭Calhoun

Yah i had the same, they have released a patch already today. So assume they are working on it.

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,659 ✭✭✭CrazyRabbit

I've rarely seen such an unpolished and buggy game on release day. And even putting aside the huge number of game-breaking bugs (including constant crashing at the same point in 1 mission, and corruption of quick save games), there are so many irritating gameplay issues.

The menu system randomly stops responding to the mouse, there's no targeting keys, the map system is slow to access and is barely useable. Enemy ships attacking you randomly go invincible or just stand there while you blow them up. Markers for enemy ships sometimes disappear from the hud making it near impossible to see the ships against the background. Oh, and my personal favourite is having the same key for firing missiles as for doing long range scans (depending which 'mode' you are in).

And to top it off, trading seems...well pointless. And that's assuming you can even find a factory, or the docking port for it. And there's really no reason to kill the enemy either. You get more loot just using the long range scanner to find the huge amount of valuable loot just lying around everywhere.

Pointless, irritating, buggy game...and that's coming from a huge fan of the X games, and after 5 hours of playing.

From what I'm reading on the steam forums, this game lacked a proper beta imo

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 23,154 Mod ✭✭✭✭Kiith

From what some people are saying, it lacked a proper alpha.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,299 ✭✭✭Potatoeman

I think I'll hold off until some of the major issues are fixed. Will it have workshop support for steam or should I try and get a hardcopy when I'm going to buy?

  • Registered Users Posts: 17,371 ✭✭✭✭Zillah

The menus are horrible and its a confusing ordeal to find anything, the station walking sections are literally 90s quality graphics, they look awful, and they're all identical and repetitive. Trade uses AI on your freighter ship and easily bugs out. The small talk mini-game is an absolute joke.

Space feels cluttered and disorganised. There's just so much decoration. There is a universal "up" to which your ship automatically flips if you try to go upsidedown.

Most people are getting serious performance issues and the devs basically said "yeah, well its not a first person shooter".

    Seriously disappointed.

Im asking Steam for a refund.

    1) Keeps crashing
    2) Constant slow frame rate (I have a very powerful PC)

    3) Not fit for purpose intended.

I was a big fan of all the other X games, this is such a let down :(

    Loved x3:Albion Prelude.

I've just been watching a Twitch.tv livestream by Willfe and X-Rebirth has crashed about 5 times in the last hour. :(
    http://www.twitch.tv/willfe

I think I'll wait a while until the game gets patched up.
Anyway I'm playing X3-Albion Prelude atm, so there's no rush to get this for me.
