hedging in planters

hi, looking into getting some planters out the front for a bit of privacy as we've a footpath a few feet outside the front door. we're not looking for anything huge, just something that will come up a few feet. so i'm wondering what kind of depth we would need in the planters to accommodate something this size?? i saw this…

hi,

also what kind of hedging would people recommend to put into planters??
