Travel/Medical Insurance

Hi all.

Enquiring if i need Medical insurance for Australia. Does medicare fully cover irish residents? Best to purchase travel insurance?

Looking to perhaps purchase aib backpackers insurance for one month, mainly just to cover for travel insurance for lost luggage etc.

Flying off to Melbourne tomorrow. Won't be stopping over to SE asia.

You are entitlement to limited medicare cover i.e emergency hospital treatment: http://www.humanservices.gov.au/customer/enablers/medicare/reciprocal-health-care-agreements/health-care-for-visitors-to-australia

We got 2 year travel insurance:backpackertravelinsurance.ie.,
We are glad we did as any travel we make will be covered over the next two years -(not just for medical - but for baggage, missed flights etc.) You must be a resident in a country (for at least a year, i think) to buy travel insurance, when in australia you will not be able to buy insurance, so if you want to go to Asia or anywhere on the way home in the next year, you wont be able to get travel insurance.

Ended up purchasing the backpacker travel insurance. thankfully arrived with all luggage attached.
