Be surprised so. Look at the OS 25" map here, you can follow the line all the way, and it was double track.

Fair enough, the map does clearly show 2 tracks. I wonder if they have narrowed sections since then though as i went down to Golden Island earlier and made a point of looking east along the track from the crossing on the Ballymahon road and there is'nt a huge amount of space between the existing walls/fencing (i guess it depends on how much room you need around the tracks to maintain safety)

IR will still have one eye on the future. If they ever plan to do a double track all the way from Galway to Dublin it will have to go via Mullingar as the rock cut in Tullamore won't be overcome too easily.

Walked those sections of track 100s of times in my youth. ..kinda nostalgic looking at it now.

Btw for interest sake. .In the photo looking East.....the 2nd track would have been on the left where the signal post now stands.

What a lovely idea. Is there a looking North. I keep thinking there should be a railway going from Killare to malin head. Let's get it built by 2016. But planning permission granted by the female planner. Won't be an orange high vis to be seen on site XOXO
