Does Dublin 15 need a big Tesco?

Personally I wouldn't see the need for a bigger Tesco in the area. The Roselawn shop is convenient, even in walking distance for me and while it might not be the huge, shiny superstore version available elsewhere, it never occured to me that the selection was in any way limited. Products that I can't get in this Tesco wouldn't be on the shelfs in a bigger Tesco either, as they are simply brands or specialist items Tesco doesn't stock. Regarding the competence and/or friendliness of staff, again this is something that would have never really occurred to me. Other than with the person at the till (from whom I would expect a basic level of general friendliness towards the customer and I can't remember ever not being served in a normal, friendly way) I usually don't have to interact with staff.

So for me it comes down to location, opening hours and quality of produce, which all are very good at the Tesco store in Roselawn. Also handy to have Gleeson's butcher right beside it, but again that's a totally personal preference and I suppose when it comes down to shopping habits it's really quite a subjective thing...

also meant to add ,why give cabra a tesco so large? considering that blanch a has a population of 100,000 ,give or take! is the cabra store there because its closer to town ?

Because its a new build and they're generally built a hell of a lot bigger if the site supports it. Even if there's not much reason to - the one in Ballinamore in Leitrim (population 805) is bigger than Roselawn! I suspect Cabra does more than enough business though.

I thought it strange given the proximity of Tesco in the Park shopping centre beside Hanlon's corner. BUT I would imagine it gets a lot of passing traffic, I know I stop on the way home from work as do almost all of my colleagues who live out this direction. The Tesco in Stoneybatter, and the one in Phibsborough are even worse than Roselawn IMO.

Funny you say that, I was thinking there the other day that having been in the Cabra one at both peak and off peak periods, it never seems especially busy, and often very dead on a weeknight....

I think some of the large tracts of unused land in or around Tyrellstown or the approach roads of the N3 leading to it is the only suitable location for a major Tesco or Tesco Extra store in the D15 area. Anywhere else in D15 probably does not have significant unused space or land suitability for such a scheme. Either that or some of the unused lands around Ongar but with the new rail line along the unused lands in Ongar, I believe planning permission will only be allowed for high density residental development to assist in making the rail line more worthwhile.

The only other alternative is to remove the strip shops and pub in Roselawn (if Tesco already owns them) and expand the Tesco there. I think they did something similar in Dundalk where they bought out all the units of a dated shopping centre that they already were the anchor store in and demolished the entire structure to make way for an Extra store.

There's going to be no additional Tesco in the area, you have Roselawn, Cabra, Phibsborough, Clearwater, Lucan, Maynooth and Clarehall all within a reasonable distance. If anything they'll revamp Roselawn but there won't be a new one.

I don't think you can say that with complete certainty though, the shop in Prussia Street is not a 5 minute drive from the new Cabra store, yet they went ahead and built that anyway, and afaik, Prussia St is still open too.

Sure if you were to say that you'd wonder why Lidl opened three stores so close to each other too.

They're going through a phase of renewal I suppose you could call it as opposed to expansion. Lidl are now copying the model Tesco followed.

I've a few problems with the Roselawn Tesco.

The first is that it can be very hit n' miss when it comes to certain items being in stock. You can go for weeks before you see certain items on the shelves.

Secondly, a significant amount of what they sell is as little too close to being past its sell-by-date for my liking. It's hard to do a weekly shop when so many things (which should last for 7-8 days) have to be used in 2-3 days.
Earlier last year I actually found lots of frozen foods that were out-of-date. Grabbed a manager nearby and he had the staff throw over 30 items out.

Thirdly, they actually stock too many varieties of certain things, and not enough varieties on others. I really don't need 4 different brands of salted peanuts.

So really, it's just stock management I have an issue with. Staff are nice and I don't care what the building looks like.

I'm actually surprised at Roselawn due to its obvious size and catchment area. I never understood why Tesco did not have a large store like the Finglas one in the area.

I haven't been in the Cabra one but do Tesco honestly believe that customers will drive from Blanch\Ongar\Clonee just to shop there?!

The Finglas store is the best one, huge range of stock which is important. Why not for D15?

Lidl have 3 stores in D15 which is mad in itself. If they see potential with 3 stores, why not Tesco for a big store?

You could say they have four if you include Clonee.

I can't stand Roselawn, its too small, horrible looking shop and just plain difficult to get to, its in a housing estate, you could be forgiven for not even knowing it exists. Right now I tend to use Cabra because I am in the area a lot, other than that I wouldn't bother. There is huge potential for a large Tesco in the area given the size of the population.

Same issue seems to hit any of the second string sized stores near Dublin. Celbridge and Lucan are very poorly and inconsistently stocked, even though Celbridge is a full rebuild.

Is this inconsistent stock just a Tesco issue as I only ever shop in Dunnes and never have this problem. Maybe if I shop late in the evening and some fruit/veg/bread is sold out but that is understandable for such perishable goods.

Pretty sure it's a Tesco thing. Their branches in Ballyfermot & Phibsborough are the same.

Infrequent deliveries, stock spending too long in their distribution depot/in transit, and inconsistent availablility of goods.

the new tesco in newry with the parking underneath is the way to go for creating enough floor space

Good example i've discovered recently. Tesco Finglas(which is huge) has feck all selection of orange juice on their fridges. Head over to Tesco Omni, a whole line of the main fridge is dedicated to a range of orange juices, like an Aladdins cave!:) Doesn't make sense.

It's down to the buying habits of the customers of each store. The Finglas regulars must not have much of a desire for orange juice so it's stocked accordingly, whereas the older people around Santry are probably afraid of rickets so overdose on the stuff !

Well, it looks the size I'd expect a supermarket to be. I've been in there a few times and never thought it was small. I find it funny that some here suggest that it is.

It's all relative. It's small compared to the one in Finglas, big compared to your average lidl/aldi. Tiny compared to some supermarkets I've been in on the continent!
