Samsung Galaxy Mini GT-S5570 - won't read SD card!

Hi all, My GF's Samsung Galaxy Mini, which she was recently given by a family member, just won't recognise any SD card inserted into the slot, despite seeming to format it. Any idea on how to get around this? Any of the SD options in the Settings are greyed out, the phone just isn't recognising anything for whatever reason.
