Anyone else missing a decent music store in Galway ? As a regular visitor to the city I recall, with more than a bit of nostalgia, afternoons browsing in Mulligan Records, Red Light Records etc !! I was never a big fan of HMV or it's like, preferred the smaller local indie stores ! Zhivago has diversified so much it's now a catch all store of mainstream chart stuff and tourist trap souvenir tatt !
I know that the music scene now is all downloads etc , but it's not the same as rummaging through the bargain bins and cd laden shelves for the occasional gem or rarity !
    Anyone feel the same ??

I do miss the old music shops, nowadays it's all downloads or Amazon CDs.
So when I'm in London I try to get my fill of cool back street music shops and clothes.

I do miss them. However, if I'm honest, I haven't bought music in a bricks and mortar shop in about 10 years.

I have some good memories of going into Zhivago's on the square and browsing the albums and listening to the new releases at the listening stand. And I know people still do this, but having to queue outside the main branch on Shop Street for your concert tickets as it was the only way of getting them. It was a unique experience. :)

Bell book and candle is fantastic alright but hit and miss for Vinyl.

Zhivago has started selling Vinyl again mind you. Prices are still very steep though compared to online.

Sad day when Mulligan's closed. At the time they said they were taking a "break", but just like when a girlfriend says the same thing, deep down you know you will never see them again.
I might sound like an old fart but buying digital music files instead of 12" is depressing as fook.

It's not a viable business anymore I'm afraid. The world has moved on.

With HMV etc going bust smaller shops have to pay for stock up front generally so they can't really carry a wide range or take a risk on something. Suppliers don't want to take the risk of not getting paid if a shop goes under so there's no credit.

Zhivago has to sell all that souvenir stuff to keep going outside of Christmas. HMV tried moving into tablets and high end stuff but there's no margin on those so it was doomed to fail. XtraVsion is swamped with pre owned stock that they're struggling to get rid of.

Don't think we'll ever see specialist music only shops outside of capital cities anymore. HMV don't look like opening before Christmas.

Pity really but the industry never adjusted to the internet age.

Anyone remember the music shop in Raftreys on mainguard st? Was it upstairs from where they sold the bikes, entrance from the church side?

Word is that HMV Mark 2 is to return to town after buy out , any idea where it will be ?? - I see the former premises is to become a pharmacy ?
Still won't be a patch on RedLight or Mulligan but at least worth a browse on a rainy evening

why did HMV not reopen in Galway when they did elsewhere in Ireland?

They're merging with Xtravision in the Shopping Centre

There was also another one called Music City...It was upstairs (somewhere on shop street).
I once met 'Carmel' from 'Carmel and the Weavers' there!
    Beat that, young folk!!:P:P:P

I think you had to go in through the shop, I don't remember a stairs entrance from the church side.
