Why the aggressiveness in your post? I get your point, you don't have to be rude about it.

I think it's you that doesn't understand dogs whatsoever. Yes the dog has shown he's aggressive towards other dogs. But that does not automatically make him aggressive towards children. The aggressiveness towards dogs is most likely from being attacked or getting into a fight with a dog and coming off badly scared and possibly injured. For a dog to be aggressive towards a child he would have to have a reason to fear children - ie if children hit it with a stick or threw stones at it, and in particular if it wasn't socialised with children and something like this happened.

Dogs attacking children is thankfully a rare occurrence. Yes we read about it in the newspapers because it's a child. But you rarely get to hear about the thousands of dog on dog attacks that happen all the time due to negligent owners.

My dog is extremely dog-aggressive. Seriously, I guarantee a lot of you have not seen anything as terrifying as what my dog tries to do to get at another dog.

    Purely. Out. Of. Fear.

    He. Loves. Children.

    Cant emphasise that enough.

This will actually be my last post on here, because I am actually sick to my core and quite a bit upset at the amount of people that think this poor, tormented and physically abused dog should be put to sleep for something it hasn't even done.

I have a dog exactly the same, he has to live apart from the rest of my dogs, although he's alright with a couple of my bitches, but with people, of all ages, he is fantastic. He came from a pound and was the most scared dog I have ever seen. Difference being ShaShaBear, you and I can see why the dog behaves the way he does, and give him a chance, keeping him and other dogs safe. Such a shame when people automatically think that dog aggression also means people aggression. Max is also fine with my cats, and pays no heed to the sheep and cattle in the area, it is purely other dogs that he is scared witless of, and behaves accordingly.

I always wanted two or three dogs, and selfishly looked into trying to get him used to being around other dogs. When his hair started falling out from the stress, I caught on to myself, and now he lives an exemplary life without other dogs to shyten the fright out of him  He hates cats too, and is utterly mesmerised by horses (I'm convinced he thinks they are dogs from Olympus) but he gets on quite well with my two rats!

Shadow even knows how much enthusiasm to put into a greeting based on the person's height. He also knows the difference between a wheelchair and a regular chair, and knows crutches mean "No jumping on legs". If he ever utterly shocked me by snapping at a child, I would blame myself, knowing that the child likely hurt him, and neither of them were under supervision. I love children too, but really they do more damage to dogs than dogs do to them. And you never see that in the paper ;)

Unfortunately people are overlooking the issue of young children who happen to be walking their dog becoming caught in the middle of a dog aggressive dog.

This has happened to me on several occasions. My daughter was absolutely terrified & luckily it was me that got bitten and not her. I also cannot take my disabled child out locally with our dogs as there are far too many loose dogs around.

I just want to state that I have no reason to believe that this dog would attack a child, I believe that he is just dog aggressive. However as Knine stated it would be far too easy for someone, child or not to get bitten in the middle of a proper fight. As I mentioned in my OP, I think I was lucky not a get bitten in the middle of everything.

I didn't start this to give out about the dog, it was the owner in this situation that was 100% responsible for what happened, there are plenty of dog aggressive dogs who have wonderful owners like ShaSha who know that there dog just can't be around other dogs and take the necessary precautions. There is no reason that a dog aggressive dog can't live happily without any incident or injury to anyone or other dogs if they have a responsible owner.

Dogs should not be let outside to roam the streets unleashed period!! This is not the dogs fault obviously but is the responsibly of the owner to keep their dogs from causing harm to other dogs and other people.

Just wanted to update my poor doggie is doing fine and seems no worse for the wear, his little wounds are healing up nicely, I am keeping a very close eye on them. Kind of a bit nervous about next time he meets another dog out walking in case he may now be fearful and become dog aggressive himself but will cross that bridge if we come to it.

I know that posting about it online is not going to do anything but it's nice just to let off steam with other responsible pet owners as like the title suggests I am really sick of what seems to be the vast majority of people in this country who are either ignorant of or don't care what responsible dog ownership is.

Also found out today that the dog attacked another dog last year, a small terrier and nearly killed it. Ringing the dog warden tomorrow as clearly this man hasn't or won't learn his lesson.

That's horrific. Glad to see your dog is on the mend but it's time for this man to be stopped.

Go and make a formal complaint to the gaurds.

Also do the dog warden but make sure you make a formal statement to the gaurds.

For this to happen at all is appalling, for a dog to have already been killed ( wtf -torn apart alive?) & it still be allowed to happen by the owner is just horrific.

Get well soon to your poor dog.

Was walking on another road in the area a little while ago and ANOTHER boxer decided to come out and attack, put my own boxer behind me and had a stick that I held out in order to keep him a distance as I knew by his body language he was not friendly, I refused to allow him past me to my dog so he became aggressive with me instead! Barking and growling pinned me up against a ditch going for me when I tried to move. Eventually managed to get past and rang the gardai when I got home, they were very good about it and are going to send a car out, I'm not the kind of person to be skittish around dogs whatsoever but this fella gave me quite the fright.
