Cannot access old iTunes library

My laptop has broken and I hadn't my iTunes backed-up. I have 2 iPhone's synced with that library, my own and my sisters. I have a new laptop arriving tomorrow and intend to download the latest version of iTunes. What will happen when I plug my iPhone into the new iTunes? Will everything get wiped?

I would imagine the new itunes will wipe the data.

What was wrong with the old laptop?

If the hard drive is OK purchase a caddy, copy the data to the new laptop and use the old HD as a portable drive.
