Just got a Yarra Valley water bill for $300, $79 of which is for actual water, that's almost 75% in miscellaneous charges.

So are water charges pretty similar elsewhere ??

I'm half in the mind to phone Joe Duffy I'm so stunned

Mine was $97 for 2.5 months. Are you renting or are you the owner?

Yes, per quarter 01 July to 30 September. And I was away for 3 weeks in July!

    I am the homeowner.

I know the reason is state govt funding the desalination plant but it's outrageous

That's insane. Did they give a breakdown of these 'Miscellaneous' charges?

Our bill is generally around $60 p/q but we rent so only pay for usage.

    The breakdown is
    Water usage: $79.32
    Water supply system charge: $44.34
    Sewerage system charge: $86.68
    Waterways and drainage charge: $22.46
    Annual parks charge: $68.47

    That's a total of $301.27

Yikes. Kind of mad that sewerage system charge is twice that of water system. Think we need smart meters on that too :)

    I'm paying $130 qtr.

I know Joe Duffy is overpaid, but there no way that ballbag is going pay your water bill.

In Adelaide, water prices are sky high. Last quarter was $450 for family of 4. Having said that, we do have the first world problem of maintaining a pool, which is not cheap.
You also get charged for every toilet flush so the old Adelaide joke talks about brown water before the flush......
And don't talk to me about the red herring of funding de-salinisation plants.........

Is that normal for renting in Vic?
I live in Sydney and have never come across rented accommodation where the tenant is liable for water charges

Yep, pretty standard I would say. Some landlords may choose to just absorb the cost of usage, as well as standing charges, but most just pay the latter and leave the former to tenant.

Think that's fair enough imo, our water usage is pretty low anyway and it encourages a bit more responsible usage when you actually have to pay it yourself...
