Haha no way! How random, I think there are only 15 places in all so I'll definitely be meeting you.

Not 100 per cent sure which subjects to choose yet but have a rough idea.

Was thinking Sociology + Politics for sure and a language (maybe Spanish) then need to pick one more!

Thought I'd drop in on this thread as I am currently going into my second year of Arts ( once I get repeat results) - in regards to subject picking I highly recommend English as one, even if you don't keep it on afterwards it's still a great one to do. The department are a pleasure to work with (was class rep for first year) and the lecturers are brilliant at what they teach - top notch in their areas :)

You cant do Children Studies if you are on GY101 arts course and only if in the specialised BA Connect course and its the same with Human Rights.
Look at doing psychology as a subject if you want to get into social work

Did you do much reading up on Arts and the subjects you can do before you picked it?

Dunno about English or History but Soc & Pol. is as easy as they say. You have like 3 assignments and one essay per semester and then an MCQ exam at christmas and summer, really not that hard to be honest, the only way you'll fail is if you do absolutely no work at all. I also did Psychology and am continuing it on for second year too. If you're aiming for the top 15 next year then I'd advise you to put in a good bit of work, if not then it's not that hard to pass. You've 2 essays, an assignment and a lab report, then just 2 MCQ's. Just a small word of warning though (for everyone really); a few of my friends ended up hating Psychology as it's not what they thought it would be. Please do not have the expectation that you will soon be able to read people's minds or suddenly "analyse" them from tehir body language! Bullshít

Psychology would be very good with Soc and Pol and Children Studies OR human rights for social work. However as said above you can't do BOTH Human Rights and Children studies, and unless you're doing just plain Arts (GY101) then you can't do either or them. They're different courses on the CAO.

Serious? I cant do either of them. I'm doing Arts 101. Why are they listed in the options in undergraduate Arts 101 as options?

Read the notes underneath the subject groupings. They are listed in the options for Arts 101 for those who are doing the other courses and they know what subjects they can choose. Also so the college doesn't need to list all the subject groupings several times.

Here are all the subject groups. Please also read the information under the subjects, it's actually quite important. But if you're looking to do social work then do Psychology with Soc and Pol, and then 2 other subjects that you like. You only continue on with 2 subjects in second year anyway so try and make them Psych and Soc &Pol.

Check out all the introductory lectures possible if you're stuck for a 3rd or 4th subject. You never know what you'll be interested in

Just a bit of advice!! My daughter did Arts. Legal Science Soc & Politics, Irish & Physiology. Irish was her best subject in Secondary school but that Irish was very hard so she gave it up after 1st year. The student from the Gaeltacht were excellent at it! She didn't score high enough to continue the Physiology to 2nd year. She continued with the other 2 subjects & they were useless. You need to pick your subjects very carefully. Arts is basically secondary teaching so you need to be concentrating on teaching subjects.

Advice that may not be as accurate or as valuable as you might think:
Dozens of students take Irish for their degree and don't find it too hard, and not all of them are from Gaeltacht areas.
Why are Legal Science and Soc/Pol useless? They are hardly boring subjects and certainly not useless in terms of finding a career afterwards or going on to an MA or Msc.
And while plenty of students proceed to secondary teaching after finishing an Arts degree, plenty don't. So if you don't think that you will want to be a secondary teacher then why choose your subjects on that basis now? Arts is an umbrella term for a variety of subjects, and there are enough of them available at NUIG that you don't have to proceed down the teaching track - consider IT, any of the languages, Economics, Maths etc, if you want to keep your career options wide open.
