B2 while already in US

We are a family of 2 parents & our 2 children.
We are currently in US under the vwp. We are Irish.

Our passport stamp allows us to stay until 15 October however this is insufficient time to complete our travel plans up the west coast.

We understand we cannot extend the 90 days & so need to apply for a b2,can anyone advise if this is correct?Also b2 applications are typically made from country of residence but we would need to apply when inside the US, can anyone advise what is the procedure for applying while in country?

You cannot change your status while utilising the visa waiver.

B visas are normally obtained at your country of residence.

Be aware that people from VWP countries often have difficulty obtaining a B2 visa as the US immigration officials will be curious why you have plans that last longer than 90 days and cannot be broken up with a stay at home, plus how you will finance such a long trip.

Thanks Buffybot, looks like we got to leave before the 15th or else we may fly to central America for a few days before returning to reset the 90 day timer, thanks again.

Bad Idea....you may not get back in. The general idea of the VWP is to spend as much time out of the country as you were in
It is usually recommended that if you spend the full 90 days in the country, you spend 90 days out of it

Also...you'll need to go further than mexico, it doesn't reset your clock if you go there.

Thanks, agree Mexico & Canada & adjacent islands will not be counted as out of USA if you return from any of them.

We are considering flying to Panama, Guatemala or some such place for a week before flying back in.
