Obviously different for different people, but the ability to use the phone with one hand isn't something that ranks highly in the decision making process for me personally.

    nor me.

I think it is difficult to expect full high end specs in a mini branded phone as well. Smaller battery would be wiped completed with such high end specs.

    Maybe there's a happy medium somewhere, I don't know.

Folks have tried and failed to get the radio working on the N7 (apparently hardware wise the 3G model can act as a telephone but it's disabled in software/firmware somewhere). I was hoping that would succeed as I have a 3G N7 and my hands are big enough to actually use it as a phone. Never materialised though so just bought the discounted N4 last week.

The N4 is just about useable with one hand and at times it's a struggle and I don't even have small hands. When I'm carrying the kid in the left arm and want to answer a text it's a struggle. The android back button is next to useless, never know where it will send you back to, so have to use the apps back button which is the furthest point from my thumb and more often than not the muscle in my thumb will hit something else before my thumb stretches to the back button.

As for choice, there are not that many options out there when it comes to top of the range android devices. Sense UI is rubbish imo, and Samsungs touch wiz look like it was developed in a kindergarten and is even worse. As someone who doesn't want to root, that leaves me with nexus and and the vanilla android versions of the HTC One and Samsung S4, both of which are too big.

"Other new information includes a screen size of 126mm or 4.96-inches diagonal, and a full case size of 131.9mm high and 68.2mm wide (for reference, the Nexus 4 is 133.9mm x 68.7mm)."

The Nexus 5 is smaller than the Nexus 4 in overall size by 2mm in height and 0.5mm in width. It's the screen size thats bigger not the overall phone which is smaller.

Not really, you can replace most of Touchwiz or Sense with a different launcher. They don't require root.

Indeed, I used nova to have the jelly bean look and feel on my galaxy s II without root, worked pretty well

Nonsense, Android is completely changeable whether it's a Samsung, HTC, Sony or even a Nexus device. Even low end modern Android devices can be changed massively to the users wants and needs.

There's numerous apps like UCCW, Beautiful Widgets and more for those who want to do it themselves.

For the terminally lazy (me), there's Buzz Launcher which can completely redo the screen to a preset style for free.

Rooting is completely unneeded, unless you want to entirely change the OS to something else, which isn't really required for the average joe.

So according to these guys, who are usually pretty reliable, the LG phone which went through FCC is not the new Nexus. On the plus side, that hopefully means the Nexus has a bigger battery and isn't plastic.

I think there was a time when android needed a little customization by device manufacturers, just to pretty it up a little. But since android 4 i don't think there's been any need to customize. I've had an HTC Hero and i'm now on a HTC Sensation XL, although I've loved both, i'm now a little sick of all of the UI customization because it seriously effects the performance

This is true, Android only got its design **** together from 4.0 on wards, since then stock has been far better looking than anything custom from manufacturers.

I think that shows in manufacturers like Sony and Motorola, they seem to be moving more towards stock android and keeping customization to a minimum

okay, now that the apple 5S 5C announcement has been made focus now shifts back to this. id imagine the jury is still out on the iphones. it certainly wasn't an epic announcement and there is a serious smattering of "meh" about on the apple forums.

so will google get their act together and get enough supplies out there. the nexus 4 was a debacle for us in ireland with the amount of hoops we had to jump through to get one. i know, not googles fault, licences and copyright.

so if they can make this affordable and get a really nicely made phone with nice clean software well, then this could be the best phone to have. fingers crossed

It'll likely perform below the new 5S in terms of testing scores, but it will be half the price, so some of that is to be expected. Sadly though I don't think the availability will be any better over here this time.

It is Google's fault, it's nothing to do with licences or copyright, they simply choose not to sell it here as there's not enough margins from the play store here to make it worth their while shipping a cut cost device here

its worth persevering though if you get one at a good price.

It's sad to think they won't sell here, even if my N4 came from the Dublin office, sent over the the UK then back to NI before I got it.

Billing was done in the Dublin office which is why it said it was being dispatched from there. The distribution centers are all in the UK.

You'd still wonder why they decided to make it more difficult for people to get their hands on the device though as time went on. I got my Nexus 10 without any hassle practically on launch. Routed via Parcel Motel, English address on my credit card etc... I bought it as simply as any other transaction on a site.

But months later when I went to buy the N4 for the OH, it was impossible to get, orders being cancelled etc... I ended up having to go via flubit.

If it's not worth their while financially to sell to Ireland I can see the point, but why block a work around that wasn't costing them anymore but they were gaining access to a market of additional customers.

Unless networks in Ireland were kicking up...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,460 ✭✭✭Ivefoundgod

Hopefully we'll get Devices on the Irish Play Store soon even if its coming from UK and we have to pay delivery or whatever. Its not much of an issue for me as my sister lives in England so can get it for me on her card any time and ship it over but I can see how frustrating it is for everyone else.

I don't really understand how it costs them money though...

    1) Add product to Google Play Store
    2) Set Price
    3) Make Money

Costs around: Support/Returns/warranty/VAT collection costs/WEEE directive

Not making excuses and am as frustrated as us all with the hoops one must jump through to purchase.

If I remember correctly I think that Google planned the launch date for the nexus 4 some time on early October last year but held off following the death of Steve jobs.

Maybe the nexus 5 will be announced early next month

Only where stock remains I'd imagine. I doubt there has been any production in recent times and you can see that it is being phased out.

Although its not the most up to date phone now, the Nexus 4 is still a great bit of kit for all the cash they want for it

I don't disagree. But generally they (Google) move on relatively quickly. Google/Android is not like Apple where a template is stuck in a manufacturing/assembly plant and churned out for years on end. Google, as well as seeking new hardware variants, also regularly move to new manufacturers (e.g. Samsung to LG) so they don't have the desire to keep older phones pumping out. There's also brand image and marketing reasons behind this too of course.

I love the fact that they use different manufactures, especially the like of LG, who don't get as much of a show as the likes of Samsung or HTC do

I would guess they will only sell off remaining stock. I can't imagine they will sell any N4 devices once the N5 is announced. I think they discontinued the GN once the N4 was announced, even though that was made by a different manufacturer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,906 ✭✭✭EGriff

The recent price drop seems like they are trying to get rid of stock before the N5 comes out, I imagine they like to keep it simple: 1 phone, 2 tablets.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,330 ✭✭✭Gran Hermano

They stopped selling the Samsung Nexus phone pretty quickly when the N4 was launched.
Is the old model N7 still on the play store? I wouldnt expect them to keep selling the N4 once it's replacement is launched.

Yep the galaxy nexus was discontinued pretty quickly after N4 release.. Apart from the other reasons above it must be remembered that the nexus phones are sold at a lower price point without much cutting back on features. It is questionable as to what profit Google make (if any) on them. Reducing prices for an old model and keeping production going would just lead to financial losses.

Some new rumours coming along now suggesting that there will actually be two Nexus phones this year.

Possible an LG Nexus 5 and a Motorola Nexus 5 also, due to follow the LG release slightly later in the year.

It's not entirely clear of the bona fides of the source though.

It really doesn't make any sense to launch two different nexus' (nexi?) at the same time. Strange. Will be keeping an eye and waiting in anticipation. the LG2 didn't really catch my eye... so a potential Motorola Nexus would be of interest to me...

Similar form factor to the last 2 Nexus phones, which is good. Hopefully the glass back will be gone as expected, and it'll be a bit thinner. That being the case, unless it performs terribly (which I can't see) it'll be my next phone, hopefully this side of Christmas!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,534 ✭✭✭Dman001

Hmmm the only reason I'd like a plastic back is if it was removable, this doesn't look removable going by the pics. I'd much rather an aluminium or glass back if that's the case to be honest, offers a much more premium feel. I'm liking the narrow bezels though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,264 ✭✭✭✭jester77

Are there any leaked specs for this? At the moment it is just looking like a faster CPU, slightly bigger screen and a better camera. Nothing really there to entice a Nexus 4 owner at the moment.

I'd prefer plastic to glass. You don't get the premium feel, but nor do you get the back cracking if you drop it.

Agree with Alpha Dog, I loved my S3 for the first few months but after a year with it I really don't want a plastic phone again. Just hate it, plus the metallic blue paint on the edge gradually scratches off in spots. Looks awful.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,062 ✭✭✭Uriel.

To be honest, my phone goes straight into a case of some form as soon as I get it, so I am generally not too worried about the back.

I loved the look of my Galaxy Nexus when I got it and didn't bother with a case... a hard lesson. Two weeks later I had a V shaped crack from one side of the screen to the other. It hasn't interfered with usage of the phone, but definitely ruined its good looks :(

Maybe a screen protector is a compromise to protect the screen yet display a phone in all its beautiful glory but I am still most likely going to err on the side of caution and get a cover for my new phone whether its the Nexus 5, S5 or other.. I have an iPhone 4s as a work phone:eek::o and it was put straight into a case when I got it last February... not a mark on it today
