I didn't. :-( Just a note saying it will be in the post 10 days before the HM.

Has anyone received their number in the post for the HM yet? I was expecting to have received it by now. I suppose there is still 2 weeks to go.

Closing date for the half is 13th September so presume the numbers won't be posted until then ?

Scrub that question, i found it.

    Looking for some advice guys:

A real newbie to running here, (well started in March 2013) please be patient with me !!. I quickly got hooked, and started to run three times a week.

Signed up for the Dublin HM, and have been training towards this goal.

Had been running up to 15km on long runs and two weeks ago when things were going really well, did a 20km run..........big mistake

I did have niggly pains in my knees and pain on the outside of my left knee also prior to this. But of course put it down to increased mileage and something that goes with the teritory

I now have what I suspect is IT band syndrome.....can run fine for about 3km before the pain on my outer left knee starts. Can manage untill about 10km, and then cannot take another step with the intense pain. That was what happened while running this Monday & Thursday.

I havent run on it since. Have been doing all the IT band stretches, and foam rolling, elevation etc.. Was swimming today with no problems and pain has completely gone....Untill I start to run I guess

So what do I do now ?? I really have no clue ??

    • Do I continue with the rest / stretches etc. and try the HM on the day and hope for the best?
    • Do I have another go at running before then to see if its better, risking further damage?
    • Do I start to come to terms that I may have to sit this one out?
I know I can get an IT band strap, will this even help? I dont want to give up if I can find the right way to be ready to do this HM in less than two weeks.......but I dont want to be stupid either :(

Any advice at all would be very welcome....I sure as hell need it ;)

Have you been recommended your current shoes by a specialist running store? If not I'd get a gait analysis done at somewhere like amphibian king or similar.

When I started running I had a similar issue and physio/orthotics/dry needling all did nothing for me but when I got advised to change my shoes (to Kayanos) the injury just disappeared!

You might be in the wrong shoes too and it might have taken the long run to point it out. Get the gait analysis done and if that says your shoes are suitable then perhaps visit a physio.

Thanks so much for your reply.

I had the gait analysis done in Lifestyle (is that sufficient?). I do overpronate on my left foot slightly.
I too have the Kayanos, even though they said I didn't necessarily need that level of support ...... I just loved the colour (told ya I was a newbie !)

My left hip clicks when I do yoga, no pain or problem or anything. Funny all this happening on the same side, maybe related.....I dunno.

Was hoping not to have to go physio, (time and finances).....was rather hoping you good people here would just sort me out??

    Any more ideas.......gettin desperate here??

Really I think you'll need to visit a physio. You could try loads of stuff but could end up pi55ing against the wind and do further damage.

I would still recommend going to a physio ....
If you're having problems with your IT Band, the strap thing won't help [ well it didn't in my case ] so that was money well wasted ...
In my case, it was too much too soon ...
The physio worked his magic on my legs and hips , fixed the problem and I then got correct shoes after a gait analysis. That was in February this year and haven't had any issues since, despite the high marathon training mileage .

    Good luck !

Def see a physio. It could be just something very small that needs a physios touch.

I had the gait analysis done in Lifestyle (is that sufficient?). I do overpronate on my left foot slightly.

Don't think the Kayanos are doing you any favours. They are for quite severe over-pronators. They are also quite heavy in comparisson to other runners. I went from Kayanos to Mizunos and the difference was unreal. My physio felt that the Kayanos were contributing to lower back pain I was getting, due to their weight.

    Thanks all for your advice...

Just back from Physio appointment, and turns out my 'slight' overpronation is more like very severe !!

Yep its an IT band issue alright. Did some dry needleing....OMG the pain. Moving the needle about was like being stabbed through a nerve. Jeeze Im not a lightweight when it comes to pain, but I couldnt go through even a few minutes of that pain !!

So have to stretch / ice and roll, she will tape me up and give me an IT band and do a trial run. If all goes well and pain free I can do the HM, Yay.

Although with a week of rest I was quite getting used to lazing about, with so much extra time on my hands it has been great ! So thanks again guys for your advice, this certainly wouldnt have got better by itself. So on the 21st if you see a girl limping along with an IT band and strapped knees...........be sure to say 'hi' !!!

I haven't killed myself with training for this one but am reasonably confident that I'll finish it in a half way decent time. For the last two weeks I've upped my mileage to 7 miles for midweek runs and a 10 mile at the weekend. Can anyone suggest what type of runs I should do from today through to next Wednesday (on the basis that I don't do anything Thursday or Friday of next week). I had been thinking that I should really get another 10 mile in but am conscious that I might be better off with shorter runs. Thanks in advance.

I plan on doing a long run on Sunday, nothing Monday and maybe 3 miles tempo on Tuesday, 3 miles again on Wednesday (Easy pace with some strides) and then not much at all Thursday or Friday, maybe a spin on the bike for a few miles.

I'm far from an expert though as this is my first half.

Does anyone know where the 1:50 pacers will position themselves?

    I think the wave starts are (1) sub 100 minutes (2) 100 to 120 minutes (3) over 120 minutes.
The 1.30 pacers are close to the front of the first wave. The 1.40 pacers will be at the very front of the second wave with the 1.50 pacers in the middle of the second wave. 2.00 pacers will lead out the third wave. They will have backpacks with large flags (number 1:30, 1:40, etc), position yourself close to them at the start and keep them in sight around the course. Their brief is to run steady miles throughout, and finish <30 seconds before their flag time.

This is getting close now so let's discuss the important issue: Post-Run Pints!!

There'll be a few people meeting up as usual in Ryans of Parkgate street (directly opposite where you get the shuttle buses to/from the race). All welcome to join. They do some nice food there too for anyone not drinking....

Do they do food for people who are drinking?

No; just stick to the guinness and kill 2 birds with one stone.
    Eating is cheating :pac:

Hey folks, has anyone else not yet received their race number for Saturday? I entered on the 6th Sept and got the confirmation email saying they'd send it out about 10 days beforehand, but still no sign...

  • Registered Users Posts: 128 ✭✭Fraggle00

If it's anything like the Frank Duffy, I wouldn't worry too much. I realized that I'd forgotten my number when it was too late to go back for it and the ladies at the help stand just issued me a new one after giving me a good slagging off for being stupid.

The race number would have been sent to the address you gave online. Numbers should have been received by now.

Mine only arrived in yesterday's post so I'd say yours will be there to greet you when you get home (assuming you're not at home at the moment of course).

Looks like the weekend will be warming up, temps up to 20 degrees for Saturday/Sunday so hydrate plenty in the couple of days leading up to the race. Hopefully the sun comes out for when we're crossing the line.

Hoping to get around under 1hr 45 although my training hasn't been great the last couple of weeks with a chest infection slowing me right down. I did 13 miles on Sunday and felt good afterwards, will do a final easy 6 miles this evening.

    Good luck everyone.

The race will be different than training.....just make sure you are reasonably rested and ready to go. The crowd will drag you up those hills on race day!

I'd like to apologise in advance to anyone unlucky enough to sit in my funky post-race vicinity on the train west from Heuston at 13:25 tomorrow.

So does this mean I can't run it if I haven't got a number ? I think it's a great idea that pink is for ladies and white is for males on The number. Best of luck to everyone.
