Looking to take the missus away for a night, and have got 2 good deals for a hotel in both Claremorris and Castlebar.

Have been out in Westport before so looking at something different in Mayo.

Looking for somewhere good to eat, a few pubs and nightclub/late bar to end the night which im sure both have.

Overall, could anyone give me their opions on both places? Not exactly looking for a quite night relaxing, but some place that you might not find too much trouble. Dont need specifics (but they are welcome), just a general overview of nightlife around the place

Ballyhaunis is the spot you need to go to if you want to impress the missus.

Castlebar hands down, more nightlife especially at the weekends. Many options to choose from for food and drink. You also have the cinema, bowling alley, TF for events, etc.

Castlebar also. Not as good as Westport, but better than Claremorris.

What are the hotels? If one is a **** hole that could influence where you go. If it's the Harlequin in Castlebar who regularly do deals that's a nice modern hotel centrally located for shopping, eating, etc. If it's Breaffy House Hotel, while also nice, it's quiet a bit outside Castlebar so will involve extra taxi's if drinking. If it's the Welcome Inn Hotel in Castlebar then I'd consider Claremorris.

Thanks for all the replies folks. Had planned on doing something at the end of September, so looks like Castlebar is the front runner at the moment.

Claremorris actually grand for a few pints ie O'Briens and Gilligans both good pubs and will be lively to say the least on the 23rd....definitely Castlebar for a night out though!

If Mayo win the All Ireland on 22.9.13 the occasional dry sherry will be sipped in most Mayo pubs - right thru to Christmas. 62 years is a long time

I find both Westport and Ballina better options then the two mentioned. Castlebar is quite grubby little place but the McHales pub is class.

ballina is nowhere near as good as castlebar and he stated westport has been done before so its between castlebar and claremorris. castllebar hands down, flyyns coxs rockys bosh irish-house bar-one tolsters mchales, rays, stacks, castle inn, mantra, the lounge, so much variety and diversity so there is something for every1

It depends if you are 17 or not. I'd say Ballina is light-years ahead over Castlebar due to the quality of the places to eat and drink. Crocketts and the Ice House for drinks and Hefier and Hen, Mount Falcon, Belleek Castle, Everest among others for food ..there is even a Chinese where you can phone in advance to order authentic Chinese dishes that really don't appear on 99% of Chineserestaurants here. I have actually driven from Castlebar to Ballina as I couldn't find anywhere in the town worth eating in.

Both Towns are lacking craft beer venues, but I know a few pubs in Ballina stocking a decent selection of whiskey. Bottles of Bud in Rockys does not a good night make.

Forgot they don't sell whiskey in Castlebar...

For a night out I can't see them heading 10/15 mins out of town to Mount Falcon, if thats the case then the OP may as well get the 15 mins on the road and eat in Knockranny for dinner etc.

If you went to Ballina, a good 40 mins away, why didn't you go to Westport instead?

Castlebar isn't the epicentre of socialising but its on a par with Ballina.
