I am moving to Dublin, wouldn't have a clue where to live. (I have come from Australia) what suburb would an artist, musician or other creative type be most likely to live? Eg. probably a good clue would be where would you find a pub with trad sessions other than in temple bar? Thanks in advance!

All the funky people I've encountered seem to live in the City Centre.

If it's an artist / musician / creative type with lots of money, probably Howth / Dalkey or Killiney.
If you're still trying to make it, city centre is probably best as you'll most likely be working out from here.

Hi, there are quite a few collectives that would give you space but you'll have to find those on your own there are quite a lot around the north city centre and are geared to the ones with no money or the types that spend all their money on their art.

If you are talking about hipsters then they seem to congregate around Stoneybatter or Rathmines. Rathmines if you have money, Stoneybatter if you don't (although people tell me with all the sudden interest in moving to Stoneybatter the rents are going up).

Like the poster above already said, if you are a successful artist Howth, Dalkey, or Killiney. If you only moderately successful check out Harold's Cross or Dun Laoghaire, and to a lesser extent Sutton.

Wow, been a while since hipsters have been spotted in Rathmines. Have you been in a coma? :)

Harold's Cross is cheap enough, cheaper than Rathmines for the most part.

Some really bizarre picks in Howth, Dalkey and Killiney.

I'd recommend Harold's Cross, most of Dublin 8, Stoneybatter or Portobello if you are into that kind of thing.

I live in Stoneybatter and I have met a few starving geniuses there.

I've met quite a few around the Liberties.

I would say Dublin 8/that part of the Liberties around Francis Street/Thomas Street and Blackpitts.

    Stoneybatter / Smithfield
You've got the Cobblestone for TRAD as well a, Ryans, Dice bar and new restaurants are starting to pop up there. Plus the cinema.

Smithfield is good for artists, Rathmines, Rathgar and Phibsboro could probably work too - reasonabl-ish rent and near the city centre. Once you're somewhere central or near the centre of town the likelihood is that you're going to encounter creative types, anyway Dublin's not really big enough for there to be one particular area where artists/musicians etc live.

Dublins a small enough town that artists don't have to live over or near where they work. Near the centre is best for galleries and studios or gigs etc. when you're young and carefree. But as kids come along you're more than likely going to value a place near a school over a place near a nightclub or a studio.
Besides back gardens have sheds which make for rehearsal rooms / studios / place to hide from missus. Delete where applicable.

Great thanks so much, definitley don't have loads of money, any extra money i have i definitley spend on my work and music! (love it) Stoneybatter/Smithfield sounds good to me, there are some cute little cottages there too. I do like the vibe of the city centre even though its dangerous for some, common sense always comes into play. Thanks so much for the great advice!

If you're artistically inclined, I'd recommend the dolphins barn area for meeting like minded, creative individuals

Is that meant to be a joke? It's one of the roughest areas I have heard (from a friend who lives in Inchicore) my car wouldn't last the night without being vandalised, apparently so I have been told.

Wonderful hyperbole from whoever gave you that info.

Not Dolphin's Barn, unless you're making a very particular kind of art.

Stoneybatter has certainly been hyped for emerging creative folk, but I'd personally go with Smithfield.. It's close enough to the hum of the city, though keeps a nice community vibe with good bars/cafes and a range of eclectic people and activities.

the North Great Georges Street / Mountjoy Square area in the north inner city?
I wouldn't consider these areas to be particularly rough now with big immigrate communities living here.

Kilmainham Lane seems to have a lot of arty types living around there, with it's proximity to Museum of Modern Art etc. Also, isn't the function room in the Patriot bar a type of mini art gallery?

Lived in Mountjoy Square for 6 years, never any bother. Surprised to hear that child porn guy was living there, too

    What an idiotic post.

Smithfield is a great area, love the big square in front of light house cinema.

Former Smithfield resident, lots happening creatively. There was (might still be) an artists collective studio/venue in Smithfield. Lots of studios around that area too.

Some of the immigrants there are amongst the roughest people you'll ever meet...the Roma pick up and congregation point is right at the gates of mountjoy square and the area is literally heaving with junkies
