Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Neither.

Wolverines are more closely related to otters, badgers and so on than they are to either dogs or cats. Wolverines are mustelids and as an evolutionary family they're as closely or distantly related to canids (the dog family) as they are to felids (cats).

And for the record dogs were domesticated from wolves only about 10ka and technically could still be considered the same species.

I think Roy Thomas (the Marvel writer who crated Wolverine) had a weird idea about what a wolverine actually was because they're really just fat little angry badgers who eat bird eggs and insects as much as they scavenge the carcasses of birds and small mammals.

Sorry for the not-one-word-answer, OP but as a biologist I can't let this stuff slide. Even at 20 past 1 on AH for some reason :(.

Beat me to it my friend, was just about to post pretty much exactly that - actually a little spooked how similar my intended reply was to yours!

It's bit mad how an animal of their size is generally feared and avoided by other larger predators like wolves cougars and bears.
They have a reputation for not backing down from any other animal when confronted other than humans which kill them for fur.
Same goes for badgers. They are left alone by alot of larger predators.
Honey badger I would avoid at all costs.
Vicious ba5tards. Even lions don't mess with them and young cheetah cubs are often avoided by most predators as they resemble a ratel ( honey badger).

Yes I know the Tasmanian devil is real :)

But no, I just thought Wolverine was derived from wolf.
