Digital cordless telephone - need another phone

A friend has brought a twin digital cordless telephone.
    Make/model: Motorola C12A (C1212A).

It has a base station with a cordless phone, another mini-station with a cordless phone. Telephone line runs into the base station. Mini-station does not have a telephone line.

The base station is located in the front room on the ground floor. The mini-station is located in the master bedroom on the top floor.

While the phones are good, my friend cannot hear the base-station's phone ringing while she is in the other end of the house. Running a cable to another room is not an option.

Went back to the shop (Argos) and found that they don't sell the mini-station + phone separately. The shop won't take the phone back.

Q: If we brought another single base-station with cordless phone (C12a), can this unit be paired up with the twin unit? If no, what are our other options?

No, any additional base unit needs it's own phone line. I checked the manual for that device and there's no mention of whether an incoming call will ring or not on the second handset but I'd be surprised if it didn't because that would effectively mean that the second handset would be good for outgoing calls only.

Does the second handset ring if you call it from the base unit handset as an internal call?

Both handsets rings if there's an incoming call.

Haven't tried the internal calling facility - simpler/quicker to yell! :D

I'll have another look at the telephone setup later - might be able to reuse the existing line in the house. - A new line had been put in recently, but not in the same room/spot as the previous line due to cost. The old line does run to the new outlet ...

She can either buy a third handset (the C12A supports up to five) and put it at a third location in the house so that she can always hear at least one of them ringing, or it might be better if she carried one of the handsets around with her like a mobile phone.

The secondary unit (what you call the 'mini-station') is simply to charge the device, you don't need to leave either handset sitting in it's unit unless it needs charging so just carry one of them around or leave one of them somewhere where she can hear it ring, neither of them needs to sit in the station all day. In fact you'll wreck the batteries if you leave them constantly on charge.
