OK I wish to get a degree in teaching in secondary school.

How many points does UCD Or NUIM need for this?

    Thanks All.

You could just do an arts degree in whatever subjects you wish to teach in whatever college and then do a HDip for a year after that, and you can teach in a secondary school. So really, the points could be between any range at all depending on what subjects you wish to teach.

I'm not too sure if there are actual courses that qualify you to be a secondary teacher so I'm sorry if I wasn't too much help in that regard!

Or you could do a specialised teaching degree like the ones for Religious Education, Home Economics, Woodwork etc..

A joint honours arts degree in ucd ranges from 340-350 in the last few years

while maynooth is around 360 for arts

you could also go to all hallows college and do english with theology to become an english teacher its about 310 points

Be aware that subjects like Business are over-subscribed and there is a quota for places on the PGDE courses for Business graduates. Other subject areas may follow.

Most of all, please be aware of the job opportunities situation, which is unlikely to improve in the near future.

NUIM has a pilot scheme running on their Kilkenny campus whereby people can do first arts there (more limited range of subjects) and transfer to Maynooth for second / third year. Points were lower than the main campus this year because it's a new offering and I think lots of people weren't even aware of it; and they're taking some applications through Vacant Places for Round 2.

There are a number of other colleges other than the traditional universities who offer undergraduate degrees which qualify you for teaching on the irish leaving cert.

St. Patricks College Thurles (Degrees awarded by University of Limerick) BEd
Mater Dei in Drumcondra (Degrees awarded by DCU)

I think the All Hallows Undergrad degree requires a H Dip after it to teach on the leaving cert
Carlow College offere a degree in English and History which also requires PDE/HDip to teach after it.
Marino offer a BSc in Ed which also requires a PDE to teach leaving cert
The private Hibernia College offer a PDE (the old H.dip)

The teaching council of ireland has a list of degree courses which they will recognise - often the issue is degrees by some universities and colleges have a large amount of a subject which would seem to qualify you to teach in secondary school - but you have to go and get your degree sanctioned by them

    http://www.teachingcouncil.ie/_fileupload/Registration/AutoQuals/Autoquals%20updated%2010th%20January%202012.pdf

the quay for most of the degrees which are not education is to get a blend of subjects you can teach e.g. english and history or Chemistry and biology etc.
    and get onto a H Dip/PDE
