My computer was in the room beside the box and I had to run Ethernet cables between the rooms in order to get a consistent connection. The WiFi connection is constantly dropping and when I spoke to UPC about it they told me if I want happy I could but a router.

I sat down this afternoon to watch Four for Texas which I'd recorded a few weeks back add it was the HD version. Around the 45 minute mark the picture went black and the audio continued. Ended up digging out my DVD copy. UPC have finally agreed to send out a new box, only took a few hundred complaints and that's of taking them to the small claims court.

Yeah I think I'll stick with my old version - too many people having the same issues.

It just sticks in my throat that I am paying more for an older, supposedly less advanced version.

It's not though, I did a factory reset on one phone and it still persisted. My dad's phone has no issue at home but when he comes here it starts and ends once he gets Home. As I said it may not be an issue with the box but from talking with people quite a few have mentioned it.

    Hi Darko
None of us UPC Customers have ever had that problem you mentioned and only you have posted this happening
It has to be your phone or email provider it cant be anything to do with Horizon as no other UPC customer with Horizon in any threads on boards.ie has this problem

What phone are you using and what email provider are you using

I've never heard of this happening to UPC customers. The problem is with your phone and/or the software or apps you're running on it.

Horizon is much better than the old boxes. No debate.

Sorry, there absolutely is a debate. The wi-fi signal from the Horizon boxes is so poor compared to the old box, it's farcical. That's a hardware issue that can't be fixed ota.

After mentioning it to a few people they have commented that "now that you mention it." One friend switched to Sky a few weeks back and said that he noticed the lack of ads when checking email. It's nothing to do with my phone or email provider, I do a factory reset every couple of weeks and it occurs whether you check yahoo or gmail. Had my phone connected to my friends Sky box last night and no ads were present when checking email, this morning back home and there's the banner ad back again.

Edit, Just to say what you are saying makes absolutely no sense here. Really, Absolutely none, at all, Not even a little bit

How is it not making sense? Whenever I check email on my phone through Horizion I get banner ads and other ads but when I connect to a Sky or Eircom wifi signal the ads aren't present. I'm not saying it's down to the Horizion box but that it only occurs when connected at home seems a little odd. Speaking with friends and they too have noticed it.

One friend mentioned that with the Horizion box and browsing on a Laptop of PC you generally get a 404 or directed to a hosting page if you enter just gmail or anything else in the address bar. On Sky, Eircom or even the old UPC boxes you'd be directed to the page in question.

Turned on the TV this morning to find that every single channel was gone. All the info for what was scheduled was showing up but not picture or sound. Tried plugging it out and back in a number of times but in the end had to do another factory reset which seems to have solved the problem for the time being.

Darko, what you are saying makes no sense. You're imagining a problem because you're pissed off with Horizon. I'm sorry but you are.

I'm not imagining a problem. The ads only pop up when connected to Horizon. I said that it may be unrelated but the issue isn't present when connected to any other provider.

And I'm not pissed off, I'm just disappointed by their poor product and lack of any solutions.

How do you check your email - through the webmail facility or using an app? Which app?

The WiFi on my Horizon is the same as my old router Cisco 3925 or something along those lines.
I was worried it would be poor so I measured the signal with an app before and after I changed to horizon and its fine. Never had any issues and consistently get about 25mb in wireless.

It does have its faults though but I think its better than all the previous STB's I've had from UPC. Recordings work finefor me ccompared with previous boxes.

Also, if it freezes after pausing it, I just double tap fast forward and press play quickly and it normally sorts it out. Do it quick and you only miss a few seconds of the show.

Read any Horizon forum you want and you'll see complaints about the wi-fi. Too many people complaining about poor signal and dropped signal for it to be coincidence. UPC gave me an external router because I complained so much and the difference between it and the Horizon box is like night and day.

Can you tell us what email service you use and how you access that service. The software on your device displays the ads not the wifi service. The only reason that you may not happen on other services is the IP addresses - perhaps whatever ware you have on your phone is targeting UPC IP addresses.

Have never experienced the other issues you describe on laptop or mobile and I have a few devices connected via wifi and LAN.

Why do you access email through a browser on a phone and not through the email application?

Because I so rarely use my phone to access email on it that I never bothered getting the app.

Very hard to see how a wifi network (any wifi network) could be responsible for ads appearing via a browser.

A factory reset does not necessarily get rid of any malware on your device. Malware can still be present and reactivate as soon as you boot up and connect to the Internet. I get the impression that you've done a few factory resets - any reason for this? It's a last resort for most people - I've only had to do it once on a device.

If you are accessing email in a browser then you will be logging into whatever your service providers site is. If you have no malware then it is quite possible that the ad placements are part of the service - usually when a service is free.

At the end of the day, all UPC provide is a dumb pipe that connects you to the Internet. Though people who are up to no good and want to spread malware are going to be more interested in UPC customers as they've got the fastest pipe when compared with other ISPs.

I've heard of this happen before with a ISP in the states.

I was thinking someone could have their wifi router setup to filter ads, or certain sites. Or be using some sort of proxy to change their location etc. Seems unlikely.

The easiest way is to use the built in app for email.

Accessing your email via the browser is probably the best way to get ads.

If its that rare then its not a problem.

If actually is a problem. Set up your phone properly?

    A hosting page?

Your friends equipment is not set up correctly.

It's still highly unusual and if it was happening with UPC then there would be multiple instances of it across the network. Unless, of course, a single phone is being targeted.

It's not malware, unless it's directly affecting the box as my housemate bought a new phone today and when he connected to our Horizion box and set up his email he had banner ads in the app itself.

Phone is set up properly and it affects all phones connected to the box. I never paid much attention to it till last week when my Dad was up and mentioned that it was only when connected to our wifi that he had ads when he accessed his email.

I love how you can claim that because I would rarely use my phone to access email that it's not a problem. Of course it is and to say otherwise is just ridiculous.

It's all set up correctly unless of course the engineer that came out from UPC did something wrong.

It is unusual but from asking around a couple of people have mentioned that they noticed the ads when connected through Horizion. I was connected to a friends Sky wifi last night and when looking at email there was no ads popping up. Took a walk over to another friends house tonight so I could see what happened when connected to Eircom and again there were no ads. My friend came over to mine after and he connected to the Horizon wifi on his phone and he had ads on his email app. Once he was home and reconnected to his Eircom wifi the ads were no longer present.

It's a strange one and an issue I had initially put down to the phone but that seems unlikely.

I don't disagree with you, just saying mine is fine so people know it's not definitely going to have a bad WiFi signal.

    About ads on UPC broadband.
Don't have any additional ads on my devices but I did once on where I was staying abroad just on the WiFi network in the villa. Loads of pop up porn ads! They were only on my phone, laptop was grand.

This thread is like someone having 20 pints, 4 shorts, 5 coffees, a fry and a curry. A roller coaster ride, then then trip on a ship in a storm.

Then complaining the next day they are so ill because they got one bad pint.
