My favourite alum so far this year is Big Inner by Mathew E White. I haven't heard many of the albums mentioned earlier in this thread, apart from The National and MBV. I was a little disappointed by The National, didn't think it showed any progress from the previous album, which I loved. And I was really disappointed by the Bowie album, which got rave reviews but obviously it didn't grab anyone here.

Yep yep yep! Not this year though...

Matthew E White was fantastic live in Whelans. But his album doesn't capture the live magic at all for me.
    Too stripped down.

Chelsea Wolfe - Pain is Beauty or Tim Hecker - Virgins. I canny decide captain!

My front runner at the moment is Toro Y Moi - Anything in Return.

My favourite 3 albums this year (in no particular order):

    Bastille - Bad Blood
Chvrches - The Bones of What You Believe
Vampire Weekend - Modern Vampires of the City

Fall Out Boy - Save Rock And Roll or Chvrches - The Bones of What You Believe for me, so far.

I'm going to abstain from picking a favourite at this point but there's quite a few albums running for the top spot.
Fuck it, I'm going to pick Loud City Song by Julia Holter. Last years Ekstasis was great and everything but Loud City Song blows it out of the water.

Very disappointed with the new Yuck album Glow and Behold, which was something I was half expecting. A pale comparison to their debut.

Funny you should say that. Only today I was listening to it and thinking it's my favourite album this year. She's pretty prolific considering Ekstasis made my top 5 or 10 or whatever it is last year. Such a unique artist operating entirely in her own genre. Her music is like a warm bath filled with fragrant oils or something.

I like that analogy. Yeah I was surprised she released a new album only a year or so after Ekstasis, makes a nice change to artists releasing a new album every 2, 3 or 4 years.

I'm gonna throw Johnny Marr's The Messenger into the pot. Really good album, sonically fantastic and lyrically intriguing.

It also allows me live in hope that Morrissey/Marr will do an album as a duo, both of them writing and singing on it. How ****ing excellent would a chorus sung by Marr and the verses sung by Morrissey sound in a tune crafted by them. I don't want a Smiths reunion. I want a Morrissey/Marr album and I want it soon please. :)

I'd also give a shout for The Late David Turpin's We Belong Dead. A masterclass in pop songwriting, production and arrangement. Features contributions from Conor O'Brien, Cathy Davey, Hunter-Gatherer and others. Excellent reviews across the board, but he's unfortunately not as well known as he should be. Yet. For me it's the Irish album of the year by a long shot.

Prefab Sprout's 'Crimson/Red' has to be a contender.

Arctic Monkeys is the best album ive got this year and by a long way. Most albums have a couple of good songs and too many crap ones. Nick cave would probably be second in what has been a pretty average year in fairness.

First two songs on Am are great. I thought Nick Cave was a much greater album and will stand the test of time as a great record

Is it ok to mention Jake Buggs new album in here? I can see it topping a lot of peoples album of the year polls.

I forgot Little Green Cars' album was released this year. I'd say it's tops for me.

Can't wait for the new album. Sure the singles weren't great but I've been really impressed with what else I've heard from it, both online and at his gig in the Olympia last week.

Pale Green Ghosts from John Grant has to be up there for me. What a moment this was on Other Voices too, and what a fantastic song...

Everything Everything - Arc. Fantastic second album and probably of all bands I like, most excited to see what no.3 will be like.

    Phoenix -Bankrupt!

Julia Holter, Foals, AM, Vampire Weekend, Editors, No Joy, Local natives, ASIWYFA, little green cars and Johnny Marr were all good listens too.

Big fan of the first Jake Bugg album but can't see it beating Bankrupt

We Are Scientists EP Business Casual was a fun listen

An album that kind of slipped out early in March and is amazing is, Low - The Invisible Way.
Real return to form after the disappointing C'mon.

Really liking the Prefab Sprout, Crimosn/Red and Manics, Rewind the Film.
    Manics one is totally underrated.

Bit Early for a list but ..

UK Independent music store, Rough Trade have revealed a list of their Top 10 favourite albums of the year, with John Grant taking top spot.

Grant heads the list with his recent LP, Pale Green Ghosts, while Savages finish as runners-up. The likes of Jon Hopkins, Parquet Courts and Dan Avery are elsewhere in the Top 10.

    1. John Grant - Pale Green Ghosts
    2. Savages - Silence Yourself
    3. Matthew E White - Big Inner
    4. Dan Avery - Drone Logic
    5. Thee Oh Sees - Floating Coffin
    6. Jon Hopkins - Immunity
    7. Valerie June - Pushin’ Against A Stone
    8. Moderat - 2
    9. Parquet Courts - Light Up Gold
    10. Jessica Pratt - Jessica Pratt

Parquet Courts - Light Up Gold?? 2012 surely

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 11,373 Mod ✭✭✭✭lordgoat

I actually called them on the 2012 albums, Big Inner is 2012 too and the answer i got was, 'it's the last 12 months so late releases in 2012 count' I was goign to point out then that 2013 in the title was in accurate and then i realised i've better things to be doing.

Ha, Big Inner was released in August 2012.....surely reaching, to say the least!

The new Future of the Left album is good. (probably been out a few months now)

There's some Stoner Metal... ish riffs on the first few tracks which I dug and loads of catchy songs dotted around the record too.

One particular song called "French Lessons" has some of my favourite lyrics of the year. It’s sort of an ode to not growing up… common topic in songs but I think “Falco” nails it.

“Well I don’t need coy carp swimming round my feet and auburn haired children blocking my path as I run to the disabled bathroom topping off a 12 hour drinking spree"

I didn't like their last album, but this is worth checking out.

It's their best since 'And Then Nothing....' for sure but there are still three or four fillers. Looking forward to seeing them in Dublin next month.

I think the Kanye album is total shi-te. And this is from someone that loves most of what he does. I feel its different for the sake of being different and is just not very good. Actually I tell a partial lie, i think parts of it are brilliant but these parts are generally 10-30 second snippets of songs, where the rest of the song is awful. (All imo of course)

Surprised to see it mentioned at all. Best hip hop of the year is RA for me.

There's a lot of music I haven't listened to yet so this isn't conclusive but of the top of my head.

    Atoms for peace - Amok
    Jon Hopkins - Immunity
Kurt Vile - Wakin on a pretty daze

    Must not forget

    James Blake - Overgown

Retrograde song of the year for me.
