I hate when people recommend shows on this basis. Awards mean fúck all, some truly dire shows have won awards.

Breaking Bad is an example of people fearing what they don't understand. Bryan Cranston is a genius,he has mastered both drama and comedy in this show.

All you haters there is a special place in hell for you.

Game of Thrones for me. I watched the first season and just couldn't get in to it. Same with Dexter.

You seem very grumpy and argumentative lately, April!

If I wrote a show, I'd much rather win awards for it than not. It means people in the industry really liked it. If I win awards three years running, chances are, I've got a pretty good show on my hands.

Seem to be very much in the minority here in that I love "The Big Bang Theory".
As for shows that everyone else seems to love but I don't. "The Office", both the original and US versions left me cold. "Suits", deeply unlikeable characters, all style and no substance. "Major Crimes", badly written, predictable and woeful acting. Now for a controversial one. "The Sopranos", I just didn't like it, no particular reason, it just bored me to tears.

I did this too, I'm doing Game of Thrones atm, it's grand and I'm just starting to get into it. It is enjoyable and I will continue watching it but I'm glad I get to do it now while the hype has died down a bit and there's less pressure to like it. I kept thinking pillars of the earth, amazing book but the tv series didn't really live up to expectations but it has a similar feel about it. My guess is had it been as drawn out as GoT, it probably would have had just as good feedback.

Mad Men is another one I just couldn't get into at all. I watched most of Season one and then thought "bugger this" and gave up.

Really wanted to like it too.

I had people at me all the time to watch Game of thrones. I really didnt think be my cup of tea at all it just came across as really boring from what i seen of it etc.

After hearing so much and thinking sure **** it i went and stuck it on ending up watching every episode so far in a bout a week!!!

Just give these things a chance your only ever gonna know for sure how u feel about something if u actually sit down and give it time and watch it!!.

For example Mad Men it comes across as a really dry boring lifeless tv show yet as soon as i started watching it the whole thing sucked me in!!

When a show is well written and the characters get hold of u and make u become interested in there lifes it makes a massive difference!!.

The only thing that bothers me about Breaking bad is i preferred when it wasnt so mainstream. When less people knew about it. Now you cant go online without hearing about it or being spoiled if u aint watched the latest episode yet!!

As a BB fan, I have to say this is a ridiculous post. BB is not difficult to understand. Bryan Cranston is an actor, I should hope he can do different kinds of acting.

    Maybe I am. And?

I would never recommend a show to anyone on the basis of it winning awards. Like I said, really awful shows eg. Two and a Half Men, have won tons of awards.

    Dare I ask why

People fearing "what they don't understand"? BB is great, but it's pretty straightforward. Nothing particularly mind-bending about it. It's a well-written, beautifully shot, well-cast show and an original idea that cleverly tapped into the growing public awareness of meth as a recreational drug. Let's not pretend it's frickin' Ulysses though.

Bryan Cranston is a genius for doing drama AND comedy?

You are 100% right. It is actually an overrated plot driven (immediately means it is not even close to character driven shows like The Wire and The Sopranos) drama that seems have exploded in popularity because it gives a dose of obviously much needed escapism to a lot of people (even more so than The Sopranos probably because Tony was always a sociopath). The cliff hangers, although well done for the most part, come straight from soaps which are not even mentioned in the same breath as BB.

It is a very entertaining show but that is about it.

Nothing better than waking up with a sore head on a Sunday afternoon and ploughing through half a series of Breaking Bad. Sensational TV. It'll be extremely tough to ever better it!

I thought Breaking Bad was stale/boring the first time I tried watching it, same with The Shield - they are both shows that you should forget about if you dislike them the first time, and then 'discover' again half-a-year to a year later, when you will be less unused to their style/pace (or whatever else it was that put you off originally).

Both of them are among the best TV shows I've seen, and I didn't like them at all at first. Some shows are so good they just demand the second (or third...) effort, but there's no point forcing yourself through them if you aren't enjoying it, just put it aside to try again in a few months or a year.

Well said, but I'd almost go as far as saying that anything on any MTV channel is cack.
How I Met Your Mother, don't understand how anyone could like it tbh.

First few seasons were good, but it's gotten very stale.

I would agree with it being plot driven but it has some absolutely brilliant character development, specifically Jessie's humanity being restored and Walt losing his. It's fascinating. Also, the cliff hangers hardly come straight from soaps.

Thought season 2 of the walking dead was rubbish, though watched it recently and after about the 5th episode it gets good.

I hated British office, but love the American one.

I thought entourage was pretty middle of the road.

I've watched Community and Reeper recently, community was average but reeper was pretty poor.

    Never liked friends or seinfeld

also everybody loves Raymond- Does any actually like that show?

I thought the inbetweeners was massively over-rated. The film in particular was awful.

Moone-Boy is another that seems to get Universal praise. Again, not much to write home about IMO.

    Just watch it.

The first scene from the first episode hooks you in and you don't escape until you've watched every episode.

You'll find yourself hating and loving every almost character at different points in the story and that by itself is a hallmark of superb character writing.

For me its only fools and horses. Granted it has some good episodes but it bores me to tears. I also find fawlty towers difficult to watch. Itbs very cringy at times, similar embarrasing humour as the office.

I find it funny how the type of shows can determine you as a person. For example I like breaking bad so I am cool, but I equally like the big bang theory so I am not.

Friends (basically one long pre-recorded laugh track)

How I Met Your Mother (see above)

    Big Bang Theory (see above)

Kimcarcrashtvdasian (a tv show following rich idiots)

I honestly don't understand how anyone watches them...They make having a Tom Hank to GOD Channel seem worth while.

Exactly. Firstly only fools and horses is critically acclaimed and isn't good. Secondly I love edgy comedies - like curb, arrested, louis ck, seinfield, etc. *and* friends.

Disliking friends is as common amongst the pseudo cool but for what it is - a house share comedy - it's pretty good.

The Big Bang Theory. Having been forced to watch a handful of episodes I have come to the conclusion that Sheldon is clearly a nonce.

    Glee. It is just tragic.

How I Met Your Mother is woeful.

Maybe it is a class and cultural thing. The characters in Only Fools are specifically related to a working class subculture of dodgy, but generally not malevolent, good natured crooks of limited intellect. We all know a version of a Del Boy. Because it is so aligned with a particular culture, that is he reason why any US remake would likely be so terrible. Either way I would be baffled as to how someone could not rate Only Fools (mind you the very first series took a few episodes to find its feet, and the very final three were not great, but the rest were like nothing else)

big brother: why would you want to sit down and look at people sleeping ??? and doing so called tasks.

x factor: hmmmm this is so predictable, has nothing to do with singing, mostly playback, and how many "dancer" you can put on a stage, then for the judges to say "you own the stage" "this show was made for you" "this is 4 yes"

How I Met Your Mother.... It's just so boring ! Friends all over again only with a totally ridiculous blond dude.

Two Broke Girls ... It's like a bad 1970s show full of racist stereotypes. They just openly mock the Asian guy for being Asian basically and have this supposedly Polish lady with an entertaining accent and another Eastern Europe guy again stereotyped. The stereotyped black guy on the till ... They had an Irish guy called 'Irish' - redhead with tatts in prison of course...

Then the whole show is just one liners between the two girls in the style if 70s stand up worthy of Bernard Manning.

Horrendous show. The only redeeming features are the theme tune and the two lead characters being easy on the eye!
    ...

"Reality" tv - doesn't matter which show, they're all as bad as each other.
