No frezzing here. I have a three branded N3 on UDMJ4.

I did receive an update OTA the minute I turned it on though.

Try starting the phone in safe mode and use it that way for a while, wouldn't be surprised if it was a rouge app.

Plenty apps out there that can cause chaos. Especially freemium games.

I have an N3 from vodafone on UDMJ6 if that helps. Just updated yesterday

So..... Rooting? How hard is it for a complete idiot?

    Easy as.

    I followed this guide:
    http://galaxynote3root.com/galaxy-note-3-root/how-to-root-galaxy-note-3/

Took only a couple of minutes.

As for why rooting, why not?
No waiting for carriers to decide to update firmwares or generously allow us to be able to access 4G is a biggie for me.

It should be a .tar file. Where did you download it to?

    What's your phone model?
    N-9005?

Actually, wait, the .img file is what is inside the .tar.
Did you open that .tar thinking it was a zip?

Odin doesn't see the img files. It needs to be in a tar to be able to flash it, that's what happened there.
SShould be grand from there onwards.

At what stage are you on this page?
    http://galaxynote3root.com/galaxy-note-3-root/how-to-root-galaxy-note-3/

(It will be a different recovery, they used Clockwork, but the steps are the same)

Indeed it does. But includes ALL the instructions and is from a trusted source, along with many user experiences to back it up.

I'm not saying your instructions are wrong in any way.

    Perfectly understand that.
I'm pointing out the one I used but one of the great things about Android is always the sheer amount of resources and guides out there for everything!

I managed to sort the cwm problem.

I am at step 11, i have no option to install Zip. Its basically a completely different screen to the one he got on his phone. I can update from cache, update from external storage and a few other options but none to install zip.

So you are at the main clockworkmod recovery screen?

How bizarre, install from zip is one of the main options, always on the main screen.

Update from shouldn't even be an option, don't think I've seen it before!

Honestly if I can root my android devices then anyone can (I'm very old and not great at following instructions!)

Just do a little research first and go at it step by step. One key step that really stumped me the first time was making sure I had the android usb drivers set up on my PC. Once I got this sorted it was pretty plain sailing.

The current firmware 3 is using doesn't have 4g enabled.
As soon as they enable it in the network (at this rate sometime in 2017) you'll have to wait for them to push a firmware update. Which may or may not take yonks.

The custom firmwares I've seen already have 4g enabled, which also allows you to get a Meteor sim to try 4g if you want to.

(or if you're travelling somewhere with 4g you can get a local sim there.)

Right, I just turned it off again

My android robot is laying on the screen looking dead, his stomach is open and there's a message saying "No Command".

Still getting the same options as earlier.

    Currently using this one:

Seems like all ROMs available are Touchiwz based, hopefully there will be a pure AOSP one soon!
(I keep forgetting that the phone itself is still quite new and these things take time.)

When you press the volume up or down, what options show on screen?

I turned phone on using volume down, lock and home until "boot recovery" appears on the top of the screen.

I honest to god have never seen that screen in the last 4 years of rooting Android phones!

It looks like the custom recovery wasn't properly loaded, though.

Maybe try to reflash either CW or TWRP recovery from Odin?

Yeah, that is the standard recovery. You want to have a custom recovery, and that should have details of the the recovery at the top or bottom of the screen. i.e. CWM version x.x

Ok, so I guess mine has came to the end of its life cycle.

1 year old daughter threw it down the toilet.

I heard the wife calling for me, then handing me a saturated phone that she fished out from the ensuite toilet, surprisingly the phone was still working as is in it was still powered on, (though very unresponsive) so I have quickly disassembled everything, memory card, sim car battery etc, placed in a container of uncooked rice, and placed in hotpress.

The next 24 hrs will be critical.

    Wish me luck guys.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,561 ✭✭✭Ionised

    Sheesh that's bad luck.

Anyone have any tips on how to turn the S-Voice OFF?

Stupid thing seems to stay activated even after the hands-free mode is turned off, and there doesn't seem to be any option to close it. I've had to restart the phone in order to get it to go away and stop popping up randomly when it hears the odd word from whoever is about.

Have looked in settings and all it talks about is the various ways of activating it - nothing about shutting it down.

    Ok, opinions please.

I have located a (according to the ad) new, and unlocked Note 3 for 450.

I'm considering meeting the guy, popping my sim in and if it works, 450 isnt a bad deal imo. if mine dries out with no problems, I can stick it on adverts too.

Plan B, I have an SGS4 in the house, but I will need a new screen on that (theres 200 euro gone) and if phones ok by mon, sell sgs4.

Either way, I need to have a phone working for Mon morning (I use it for business)

    What say you guys?

Fastest option would probably be to get the Note rather than fix the S4 - unless you know a repair place that works fast and keeps screens in stock?

Guy near me in naas reckons he would fix in a few hours today.

Swinging towards the new note though, I reckon I will get my money back on mine on donedeal (450) (assuming it starts back up again) and 450 for a brand spanking one isnt bad.

You know water damage will eventually kill the phone even though it might turn on later. Nice to know that there will be one genuinely damaged phone out there for sale.

I dropped a HTC Desire HD in water before and dried it out. It lasted me another year and I sold it on to somebody that can contact me back if any issues. Well over a year later, they haven't.

    Phone wouldnt turn on today.

Thats a full 24hrs in hotpress covered with rice.

Not looking good. Bad month to be shelling out 450 on a new phone too.

I'll check it again in a few days.

Is it worth getting the LTE version? Out of a choice of the 16gb LTE or the 32gb non Lte which would you choose. Non LTE is 20 euro cheaper.

Well LTE is the future so if you want to future proof your phone I would go for that one.
