    Hi there,

I was recently given a gift of a Sony record player http://store.sony.com/p/PS-LX300USB/en/p/PSLX300USB

Which requires additional amplification. I would also like to use this opportunity if possible to build good sound / surround sound system for my TV. Can you recommend any options?

    A friend recommended  http://www.richersounds.com/package/system-savers/hi-fi-system-deals/pah01855

    What do you think?
    Hi Lizard,

Thanks for getting in touch, and apologies about the delay in getting back to you.

The system your friend recommended would work great for the turntable but wouldn't cover surround sound unfortunately :(

For surround sound you'd need an AV receiver.  This will support 5.1 surround sound.  You could also connect your turntable into this for vinyl playback.

You could take a look at the Pioneer system below.  This comes with the amp you'll need an a full 5.1 speaker pack.  Check the link below for more info:

Let me know what you think.

    Nice One!

Looks great, i came across the following option. Can you tell me the difference between the model you suggested and the following model?

    http://www.richersounds.com/product/speaker-packages/pioneer/htp071/pion-htp071

Also, where could I pick up or buy either model? Im based in Dublin. Are there any online discount codes??

    Thanks!!

    The Lizard,

thanks for the response, unfortunately the HTP071 is now a finished line and the HTP072 is the new replacement.

We don't have a Dublin store at the moment, but we ship across the whole of Ireland on a daily basis and delivery of the HTP072 is just £12.95 - on the online discount codes, 'fraid not - that £199.95 price for the Pioneer AV Receiver AND 5.1 speaker system, really is as low as we can go!

Thanks again and keep us posted,

Are you sure? The specs for the Cambridge AM1 says no phono input and there's no mention of turntables in the description.  I'd be interested in this if it can run a turntable.

    Hi MyPerfectCousin,

The Sony turntable has a phone stage built in so it can plug directly into the Cambridge or any amp that doesn't have a phono stage built in.

If the turntable you're looking at doesn't have a phono stage built you'll then need a seperate pre phono amp to go between the turntable and amp.

Thanks for all the feedback, really helpful.

I just have one last query RE: the points mentioned above.

Would the dedicated Surround Sound kit pioneer htp 072 be as effective or more/less effective than the Cambridge AM1 speaker for playing vinyl records and/or music in general?http://www.richersounds.com/package/system-savers/hi-fi-system-deals/pah01855

    Thanks!

    Hi there.

There is a mis-conception that surround systems are good at music. Unless you go for up the range, I would never recommend a surround system for music playback. Using a proper stereo amplifier and decent speakers will sound better for music that a surround system like the Pioneer system.

The Pioneer system is designed with movies in mind.

If you are going to use the system for 70% movies/tv and 30% music then I would go with the surround system, otherwise get better music reproduction and forget about the surround system.

    I hope this helps.

    Ah ok,

My 1st priority is in having a decent set of speakers to play the music from the vinyl player or ipod/iphone and secondly to improve the audio experience from tv/movies. If the surround sound packages at that price range compromise the music quality then ill likely just go for the speakers i think!

I guess the tv sound quality will be vastly improved also anyway, just without the surround sound.

    Thanks for the advice.

    Hi Lizard.

I think that's the wise option although that system you are looking at is a very basic system and not one that we can despatch so it would need to be collected in-store.

If this is going to be a main music system then I would recommend looking at better speakers as those are the cheapest speakers that we stock and changing them would get you a vastly better sound for not a huge amount more.

    I would recommend :

    Cambridge Topaz AM1 amplifier
    JBL Control 1 speakers - http://www.richersounds.com/product/standmount-speakers/jbl/control-1/jbl-contorl-1-blk
    Cambridge Audio 100 3.5 cable

    Total including delivery £152.89.

This is a much longer term investment and will sound great for the money and the additional cost over the tibo speakers as you may change the tibo at some stage.

    Many thanks

    Dave

    Thanks Dave,

Though i was thinking I might go for something a little bigger on the speaker front, like the http://www.richersounds.com/product/standmount-speakers/wharfedale/diamond-9.0/whar-9.0-blk

Would delivery to Dublin of the following be possible, and how much would it come to including delivery?

    Cambridge Topaz AM1 amplifier
    Wharfedale Diamond 9.0 - http://www.richersounds.com/product/standmount-speakers/wharfedale/diamond-9.0/whar-9.0-blk
    Cambridge Audio 100 3.5 cable

    Hi Lizard.

The total including delivery for the bits list would be £142.84.

This would be a nice little system.

Would you also require speaker cable to connect the speakers to the amp? If so how many meters would you need?

    Lovely stuff!

I would indeed require speaker cable, maybe about 3-5 meters (do the cable packages come in standard lengths or is it cut to order?) would cover it.

We cut the cable to the length needed and our basic cable is .99p per metre so 5m would be £4.95.

    Many thanks
