41 & need some new music

Hi everyone,

I am looking for suggestions for recent bands / albums to check out. I have always been right into rock / metal but the wife and I have 3 kids under 5 so I have not been able to keep up with new music lately & don't want only golden oldies on my iPod.

To give you an idea of what I like, it is anything from Talking heads to Slayer with bands like green day, korn, metallica, SOAD, slipknot, five finger & QOTSA in the middle.

Basically I like anything with rhythm & decent vocals. I love the really fast / heavy stuff but I don't like the screamed or mumbled vocals.

Man you're gonna get some random suggestions in here so I'll start by trying to narrow down your preferences by asking a few questions. You say you don't like screamed vocals yet you offer Slipknot and FFDP as bands that you like so I assume you mean you're not all that into the extreme end of Metal such as Death Metal or Black Metal. Last.fm is a good resource for suggesting bands that are similar to bands that you already like the so I'll recommend you check that out first of all.

Your taste seems to lean more toward the mainstream so I'll suggest Rammstein, Stone Sour, Avenged Sevenfold, Mastodon as a starting point and see what you think.

There was a thread in here recently, in fact it's still on the first page, and it's full of suggestions for somebody looking to get into Metal or who's looking to reacquaint themselves with the genre.

Thanks Passenger. Your suggestions were bang on. I actually like all the bands you mentioned apart from Mastodon (haven't heard any of their stuff)

I should have clarified a bit. The Slipknot & five finger, some songs I like more than others. As you say, probably the more mainstream tracks.

Are you familiar with the classic bands or are you looking for something a little new and different?

If you're interested in branching out from the mainstream slightly, may I suggest some Prog Metal/Power Metal bands.

Prog Metal Titans Dream Theater. Long compositions, complex time signatures, melodic, heavy. Just brilliant.

As I said, you could really be here all day making random suggestions. Everybody's taste is different and I don't want to overwhelm you with suggestions but hopefully there's something there that tickles your fancy.

OP - go a lose yourself in Porcupine Trees back catalog - from a metal-ish perspective start with Fear Of A Blank Planet - then go forwards or backwards from there. Should keep you busy for about a year
