Mods please separate this if you don't feel it's appropriate in this thread.

Driving some friends following a trans-Atlantic flight to Kilkenny. They would like to stop somewhere near, but not in, Kilkenny for breakfast. Any suggestions (even a little bit off the M9) from about 8am?

The Arboreteum in Leighlinbridge just off Junction 6 would be a good one. Not sure what they do for breakfast but I'd imagine they do. And close to Kilkenny too.

Accorrding to this the restaurant serves breakfast from 9:00-11:30. If that's too late you could check out the Lord Bagenal hotel http://www.lordbagenal.com/index.html

I see the builder's are starting to clear the site for the new service station in paulstown.

Look to be moving fast on this. Presume it's the site 1st field to left on Paulstown village side of roundabout off M9 with all the earthmovers in. Likely want the get ahead of the others that are planned as if they get opened 1st it makes the rest less viable/likely to be built.
Good spot, very near the motorway.

passed today and looks like they have the site cleared already, hopefully it will fly up

Theoretically It's not for Paulstown, its for the M9 motorway and almost didn't get permission for that very reason.
But your right, it will give employment locally.

Any idea who or what is going in? Topaz or Applegreen? Is there drive thru included?
Ironically, this will prob open sooner than the official service area near Kilcullen where they closed half the motorway for months on end installing flyover/approach roads.

They stole a march on everyone. Will be the first services to open on the M9 and get established.
Just shows the efficiency of a private sector development vs the public NRA backed think at Kilcullen which wasted millions of taxpayers money building a new junction to serve something not even built yet. And appears to be stuck in contract/tender issues.

I can never understand why people whine about something they don't seem to understand.

Paulstown is about 60km from Kilcullen services - BOTH are needed.

Paulstown is a small fuel/food stop. Kilcullen will be full motorway services with truck rest area.

Paulstown is owned privately a being constructed privately and being leased to Applegreen who are no longer proceeding with their plans for junction 6.

Kilcullen is owned by NRA, site works are by NRA and the operation of it was put out for tender as part of a package with M6 & M11 services.

Paulstown applied for plannignover 2 years ago and finally is being built. (and will pen January)

Kilcullen timeline is not far off that and because its a government agency it has to go through a rigorous tendering process - as Paulstown is privately owned, an agreement could easily have been made over a pint of beer. Kilcullen went for tender in March 2014 and prefferred status was given in August (that fairly good timing) There has been a challenge by Applegreen on the awarding to Topaz, and this will delay things.

But both services are needed and both will do well.

I also reckon now that Topaz are likely operators of Kilcullen, that means the topaz plan for Junction 5 will be cancelled.

Very close to the service stations already on the N7 though!

It will have 100 car parking spaces and thirteen truck parking spaces, separate truck fuelling and a drive thru, so I don't know how that compares.

Full services would have about 50 truck/coach spaces, over 200 car spaces and about three times the size dining facilities.

The truck part is most important as trucks have to take mandatory breaks, hence the design of main services puts heavy emphasis on truck facilities.

Personally I can't wait as I go to Waterford at least once a week and the lack of facilities is crazy.

No decent facilites on N7 for having a decent break or a meeting but applegreen are planning a big development at the ball in Naas - this will include new HQ and a food preparation facility to supply all their places.

True. Never think of the truck side of it. If they are building a big service area at Naas do you think they will still go ahead with Kilcullen?

Naas is an "off line" service area and probably with not a lot of truck parking.

Kilcullen is part of a 3 services package (m6 & m11) and both topaz & applegreen / top consortium want it with topaz the preferred bidder now. Applegreen / top are challenging this due to the way some wording was interpreted.

The Arboretum, south of Carlow is a handy stop point between Dublin and Waterford. Its just off the motorway but not as convenient as the few motorway stops around the country.
