Why is everyone pulling against the OP. His ( I presume ) idea is a great idea. Why can't us begrudging Irish just get behind the idea and see it through to the end. Only good can come from it

I was at a baseball game last night, and a wounded veteran was called out on the field with his family. He lost a leg in Afghanistan after an IED explored. A construction company donated a house to him and his family and he now gets to live mortgage free.

There are 613,742 accounts on boards.ie, the current most viewed thread on boards has over 8,000 replies. We easily have the ability to put a family in need of help into a 3 bed house for €10 each if 10,000 of us stand together.

I'm sure everyone is feeling the pinch, but how about if someone didn't have to emigrate, or see themselves out on the street, or end up living with relatives?

Could boards do this, and have the satisfaction of saying "Yeah, that house, we gave it to that family" I'm sure Santa Strike Force has come across someone who needs this and can suggest the family we do it for.

I'm in. We can do this by Christmas.

    I pledge €10.

    Who's with me?

Personally I would rather help raise money for two very special houses that will help a lot of families http://www.clicsargent.org.uk/content/northern-ireland-appeal

Why not offer one of your rooms OP?

Charity begins at home...in this case.. me.

I've a lot of debt to clear.

    No interest.

Edit: To actually not sound like a prick...

I'm sorry, I can't read all of the thread first, so I'm not sure if this has been said before.

This is a great idea! We should all do it. Everyone with any "handy" talent should help out first. They should lay foundations. Then bricklayers should come in next. Electricians would be useful, as would plumbers, etc.

Eventually we'll all have a home to live in without needing to pay a penny to anyone (I will be willing to provide food, drink, tools and materials for the workers).

    So, whats the downside?

That's great. Please everyone donate to it.

But if you still have a tenner after, why not have a bit if craic making an thread into a house.

Being perfectly honest, I have an issue with giving people money who I dont know and over the internet. Call me a traditional :pac:

But in all seriousness, imagine if boards.ie actually ran a charity pledge to help someone in need gain a house. Talk about advertising for the website. Sheesh. Every paper and website would mention it (Note to boards if in that event give me credit? ) lol.

Planning permission for a 10,000 bed house.

We are just paying for the house, easiest least complicated way.

Would you like to pledge a tenner?

It took 14 pages and 200 posts to get 16 people to join up. This thread could turn into a record breaker.

    So lets do it.

I'll put in sound audited controls and promise never to have access to the money.

We can surely get a way to run it through a charity account.

It's a simple idea, it might just work.

I'm thinking about it. But you will really have to set up that account. No good having €1000 or €2000 in pledges and then the whole thing petering out which could happen. That would make me think it was not a serious venture and that people were only pledging to make themeselves look good and they have no real expectation of ever being asked for the actual cash.

Also you have demonstrated very thorough legal knowledge in various fields in other threads so you should be able to research the legal aspects for this project. I know you were only prompted to the idea a day ago but it is most important that you establish that it does not contravene any law here. I have to leave it to you as the originator of the idea to guarantee that. And what had you in mind when your wrote this? We need to just spot the tax minefields.

Meh. Donating to a charity would be better. I see plenty of pitfalls in your proposals. Eg how do you ppick the beneficiaries, tax, legalities.

    Ah you are coming round.

But this thread needs legs, if we have 2k-3k pledged can realistically ask the mods for things like stickies and a hosted private forum for pledgees to bash out the details and who will be the recipient. I must say that a Priory Hall victim could be a good idea and that could be completely randomised.

This thread is to build credibility. I will call fundit monday and see can they cap their fees, and look into the legal side on the legal forums and tax on the tax forums tomorrow.

In the meantime keep the pledges coming.

I don't see any unique appeal in fixing 1 big problem for 1 family/person.

This 1 act would inevitably come at the expense of many other small donations to many people.

(If I give a tenner today for this (mystery project) - naturally Im less likely to give a tenner elsewhere tomorrow)

So while you might have one moment of glory for that 1 guy, 1000 others out there miss out on their food parcel, solar panel, water well, goat lol ... or whatever, at a future point. Just how it works unfortunately.

There are so many long established, well functioning, reputable local charities out there - experienced in their own diverse fields of expertise.
(some im sure with projects running right now that you can help and watch)

They have the experience, skills, and management in place to best use any money that comes in.

Although it may not have the same satisfaction level as being able to point to a deed and say 'hey thats thanks to me' - a small donation will probably be used more efficiently by a reputable experienced charity.

They're more likely to be able to target the money appropriately for the best effect, they tend to carefully study where to spend.

...and will probably be able to take advantage of efficiency of scale for blankets, food and the like. Effectively more bang for your buck ... :)

In Ireland, the likes of SVDP or the Simon community are dedicated, local, reliable, established and would be the safest bet for the best - most efficient and best targeted - use of those tenners.

We HATE looking like fools who just want everybodys hard earned money, we have pride and we just wish we could make it ourselves!

This thread, and the kind people who would actually do this for the poor, genuine families who really need the help, would have been of a huge help to us last year when we couldn't even afford milk!
I would of course pledge €10. I'm doing a lot better and even though we still don't get much money, I would happily give what I can to help someone who is where I was last year!

Good on ya for starting this thread!

Well its kind of important to get it right.

Im just suggesting established charities with a record of successes and dedicated volunteers and staff, over a forum whim with no established plan and non-backed "donations" from anonymous individuals.
