Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

It doesn't reflect the reality of what pubs sell and what information consumers need to make informed choices. It reads like the drafter had the concept of pubs patiently explained to them but had never actually set foot in one.

Hitting this boozer after work, I presume it's fairly chockablock on a Friday?

A pub near me has the mandatory pricelist, but it's behind the bar on the wall, which is very far from near the entrance. It's been there for 15 years at least. Which shows the level of enforcement of the law.

Pints of Shipyard IPA were €1.99 last week.

I'll be back again this weekend.

Was there tonight, severely disappointed. Asked for at least 5 different beers which were all out of stock. Staff had no idea what they were doing.

Ended up just heading to the dark horse around the corner which, to be honest was well worth the extra euro or two per pint just for the better atmosphere and service.

Just in here now. No Ghostship, London Pride, Shipyard, Devils Backbone. Could be even more out of stock, that's all that I gathered. Gave up on the draft and settled for the six point cans.

They do. They have hobgoblin, broadside and doombar.

I tweeted them about the lack of stock and this response...
with the major uplift in sales we've been caught out. Apologies my good man! All will return this week! & a major ale event!

    Sounds promising.

Who knows. All I read was 'MAJOR ALE EVENT'. So we'll see. I'm still happy enough drinking six point/Goose island/Brooklyn/8 degrees etc bottles/cans for 2.45.

Tetleys is most definitely not on cask. It's a nitro bitter.

    Tweeted this evening at 9:44 p.m. from @ThreeTunTavern .....

    #fact - we have sold 16 Barrels of Heineken in 3 days. That's 1710gallons or 1408 pints. That's a lot.

Edit: it seems to have been pulled (deleted), I've typed it above exactly as posted on Twitter so please don't pull me up on the gallons/pints error. By my reckoning the numbers stack up if you substitute 176 for the number of gallons. 16 barrels at 11 gallons a barrel is 176 gallons or 1,408 pints.

Ah, my mistake, I havent drank it, just assumed it was because it was on of the €1.99 specials.

It was absolutely packed tonight and about half of their products were sold out. They had no vodka at all and their Jameson was gone.

Its the worst service I've had in there so far, their staff cannot handle crowds.

At those new prices they better have the barricades ready when they open the old Forty Foot in Dun Laoghaire, they might even get some of the regulars from O'Loughlins!

They would want to, they just don't have any experienced staff at the moment and it's working to their detriment.

While there may be a little truth in that, it comes across as being very cocky.

A point that hasn't really come up so far, AFAIK.

Even if Spoons are a lot cheaper for ever, will this really bring prices down elsewhere? I mean, if Spoons reach 5% market penetration, which is a lot, there are still 95% of pubs that aren't Spoons. It's not like everyone is going to be able to go to Spoons, is it? The other pubs can just accept they'll lose some customers and keep charging 5-6 quid a pint.

Not sure about it being cocky, if they can make it work, and force others (LVA pubs especially) to lower their prices, then maybe it is a revolution. They already have a far better selection than most Irish pubs, and at prices cheaper than off licences.

It'll probably force pubs to start having special offers, a particular pint for 2.50 or some sort of meal deal. I don't see pubs rivalling wetherspoons for price any time soon, but its a win-win for the consumer if they do

They're listed here. Unfortunately the all-important information about where each beer was brewed is missing.

Edit: via Seaneh, late of this parish -- the full details. And I was looking forward to that ' IJ one too :(

Paying minimum wage they aren't gonna get experienced staff. They just need the staff not walking out and they are doing quite well. When they move into their cork premises I can guarantee they won't have enough staff so service won't be quick or good, but are people really going there for the service?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,304 ✭✭✭Lucena

Yes, people are going for the service. Not the 'How was your day, Sir/Ma'am' nonsense, more the 'not having to fight your way to the bar, and spend ages trying to get the barperson's attention' type service.
If people typically have to spend ten minutes at the bar to get a pint, a lot of them will go elsewhere.

Wetherspoons second premises in Cork is supposedly going into the old Tsb building directly across from Barry's in Douglas, this will really shake things up as Douglas already has a thriving pub scene.

I agree and I didn't expect great service, but I also don't expect to wait 20 minutes for a drink, but thats what happened

Well at least its nice to have the variety. You don't have to go in there after all. There is no shortage of Irish pubs.
I would predict that if they are selling pints of beer for under 4 euro that they will be out the door with the younger crowd who are watching their shillings. You can be guaranteed that a pub packed with a younger crowd getting their groove on with cheep drink wont be the souless British pub that people are commenting on on this thread.
Hopefully it will be like a duvet slipping off a bed and the advent of cheep dink is upon us !

I wonder what the new food concept for GBB is. My bet is barbecue.

I reckon I'll check out the ale festival in Spoons on Friday. I see you can have a festival ale with any of the food items that come with a drink.

I also realise that I only read the first page yesterday. That's rather a lot of ales. How many will make it to our shores though?

Indeed. Even in the UK these festivals are very randomised. I guess the idea is to keep you coming back to your neighbourhood outlet. Doesn't really work when there's only one in the entire country :(

Last year CAMRA NI made an arrangement with The Bridge House in Belfast that they were all coming on on one specific Saturday and asked the pub to have the biggest range of festival beers on that day. It worked really well too*. Something to keep in mind for a future Boards beers, maybe.

*as in, I nearly missed my train

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 740 ✭✭✭poitinstill

been in london a few times for this festival. think the might get 1 or 2 casks of a good few as when it ran out there was always a next-up card on the pump clip that had a different beer.

anything updates on the Cork Paul St opening or the Douglas location i had heard it was the Orchard on s douglas road ?
