TBH, games are the only thing I typically went to HMV for, and increasingly the DVDs / BluRays I buy are 90% from the specialist labels they don't stock anyway. That 10%, maybe the odd discounted BluRay in HMV. But it was games where they were beyond the pack. Even outside of new release prices, I've noticed far fewer and far smaller discounts without them around. You could usually rely on HMV to knock the price down to around 29.99 within a few weeks of release, but that's not quite as common in Gamestop or Smyths now. Again, better sales is one thing sorely lacking since HMV packed up - let's hope there's somewhat of a return to that when they reopen later this week.

In the UK at least, they have been doing some great deals on some of the niche labels. All new Arrow Blu-Rays are £9.99 on release day which is £3 cheaper than amazon. Hara Kiri was £8 in the Leeds store and they had quite a lot of the Masters of Cinema, Eureka, etc titles cheaper than amazon. The great thing about HMV was that they could order in most releases, including all the MoC, Eureka, etc. Best of all, if you ordered in a Blu or Game for €10 les than the release day price they only charged you the original price. Preorder and prepay for a game in gamestop and if the release day price is €10 more then you're not getting your game till you pay the difference.

I've been very impressed with HMV's prices in Belfast for a while now. Game are just next door to them and their prices are always at least £5-10 more expensive. When it came to the 32GB memory cards for the Vita, the price difference between them was £30  £54.99 in HMV and £86.99 in Game.

No fruitless argument. They're going to accept old gift tokens.

Ah nuts! When my wife tried to spend mine (before the irish operation went into admin on paper, but after the english op had) they refused and people were throwing their gift cards on the ground in disgust. I fecking told her to pick them up, they'd come in handy....

Still this is excellent news and bodes well for my chances of ever playing Rayman Legends on WiiU :) Thanks for the heads up!

Wow, is Raymon legends really 60eu in gamestop?!?! That's shocking!

Well, unfortunately I cannot afford to buy in gamestop anymore. Looks like I will just get my ps4 and 2-3 games off them and then . Will continue buying online. There is no HMV in our town, but we do have extravision. Will need to check them later on if they do working on rebranding and restructuring.

Even if it is only a few euro cheaper on new releases, better than gamestop like. And in pre owned games even more.

Funnily enough, HMV are still fully alive and kicking here in Canada. Seems they never went away either.

They are planning on turning some xtravisions into a HMV/xtravision shop.

Delighted to hear this. I was cracking up when I walked past the old Galway HMV yesterday to see that it's becoming a Pharmacy/Beauty joint. Any idea which Xtravision stores are getting the HMV treatment, or when?

Hilco, the company that bought over HMV UK/Ireland also own/run the Canadian HMVs.

Too bad the one in cork isn't reopening :(.

Dang, the one in Cork is the best one. Did any shop move in there yet, it's a quality location.

Does anyone know what dates the Shops are re-opening at?

I just heard on the radio that Henry Street is open today, and the other 3 aren't open until next week. That saves me a trip today (assuming it's true).

If anyone will be in the one that open today, can they check price of games? At least we will know if they are sticking to RRP like all the big boys or are they here to give some competition.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,835 ✭✭✭✭cloud493

I might pop down and see how the bargains are.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,546 ✭✭✭✭Varik

What was the damage for one?

Splinter cell blacklist is 35eu !

Rest of the games are 50 or 55 for recent and new ones, all games are cheaper than game stop, shop was too busy to ask about trade in prices etc.

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,762 ✭✭✭DaveNoCheese

Delighted they are back, finally there might be a competitive marketplace forcing gamestop to rethink some of their prices!

Will pop into the Limerick store over the weekend, pity the city centre store is remaining closed, was handy.

The dual-branded Xtravision/HMV stores will start launching during September.
