just back from Bofin, I was wondering... could anyone explain to me the reasons why an airstrip has been built on the island? Is it being used? Is it really necessary to the island and its people?

Armed secret service agents are on their way to your house right now...

They ran out of money basically, they were going to put the terminal building in a few years ago but it never happened. There's an identical abandoned strip outside Clifden to serve it.

There is no fire service to man it. They ran out of investment. The runway has massive x's painted on to mark it as out of service.

Went to Bofin for the first time a couple of weeks ago. It was like a little piece of heaven on earth, an airport would totally spoil it's beauty and tranquility.

Nice view's worth bugger all when you're losing consciousness and the sea's too rough to boat to hospital on the mainland.

    SSHH - secret project.

Going to auction it confidentially to Russians or Germans

That's what the coastguard helicopter is for. No need for a runway or any facilities, they'll even winch you up if they don't have enough space to land.

Any idea who is actually responsible for the disused runway?

I love to try a landyacht on it. There'd be no shortage of wind :)

Which is always available and never doing anything except waiting for an emergency to happen on Bofin.

    Options are good.

Tis one of the biggest jokes on the island. Between both there and Cleggan, the airstrips cost more than €8 million. they will never be used unless there are terminals provided and emergency services at both locations. They would be great for boy racers to let off a bit of steam without harming anyone!!

This has got some publicity lately due to the PAC proceedings.

I see Deputy is making the running on the PAC. She would not have much experience of the West coast.

    Connectivity is the current buzz-word.

Perhaps as economies improve air access to 'Bofin and other islands could be reconsidered
