Very retro. The away one is like the European Cup winning one. Very inappropriate for the current team!

What are you talking about? If anything if that team had Nathan Baker and Ciaran Clark at CB they would have won more European trophies.

I'm not seeing anything in overdrive. Are you following AVFCTransferTweet or something? That guy knows nothing. He is embarrassing...

In any case, rumours are just rumours. Personally I don't think anything is about to happen. Hopefully I'm wrong.

Trying to think of a list of summer transfer targets that we can pay in coke and $10k prostitutes?

Rene Higuita as GK coach to replace Given
Adrian Mutu to replace Grant Holt

I don't think this story is as crazy as it seems, it's in the Independent (the UK one) which doesn't deal in football rumours and a paper Lerner has given rare interviews to.

It is decent but doesn't seem to be as tight fit as the Crystal Palace one. The away one will be nice assuming it is the same as the leaked one which it more than likely will be.

Would he be working with Given? At least Guzan wouldn't let the ball bounce in his 6 yard box.

I reckon it is nonsense anyway.

it's the Mirror so... but I did read that he had been offered work by a premiership team that wouldnt mean having to leave Ireland before he turned down the Celtic opportunity so it makes sense
Roy Keane is considering a shock move to Aston Villa to become manager Paul Lambert’s new assistant.

Keane is tempted, as it would enable him to continue working for the Republic of Ireland national team under Martin O’Neill and also remain as an ITV pundit.

The news comes on the same day that former Manchester United captain turned down the chance to manage Scottish champions Celtic in his own right.

MirrorSport understands O’Neill’s assistant is reluctant to walk out on his country again, following his infamous bust-up at the 2002 World Cup.

But the 42-year-old is pals with Lambert, who is forming a new back-room staff after Villa sacked Ian Culverhouse and Gary Karsa. The duo were dismissed last month

Linked with Senderos on a free.

**** right off. I guess it was too hopeful to actually believe it might see a change at the club during the summer.

If Okore is back whats wrong with Senderos on the bench?

    Hes better than Baker imo

Keane deal looks done. He's pulled out of the ITV punditry team for the World Cup.

Does this make anyone else think the ownership issue must be somewhat agreed upon? I could't imagine Keane, who walked out on a World Cup because he wasn't happy with training pitch and lack of bibs, agreeing to take a job like this at a club that has struggled so badly and give up his chance to work on the World Cup if he wasn't sure it was a smart move.

It doesn't make sense to me if the club was in the state of limbo we fear it is. Maybe I'm wrong.

Picking up experienced players on frees is exactly what I hope we do this summer if no deal goes through. They can't all be world beaters. Senderos is the slowest thing I've ever seen on a football pitch but he is a good defender in terms of positioning etc. Clark and Baker really aren't. I'm happier with him as back up to hopefully a well performing Vlaar/Okore pairing.

Rumours he pulled out of the ITV gig as he wasn't happy with the quality of the chairs!

In all seriousness it is a strange one for me though, as you say it might have something to do with potential new owners.

Hard to read the man though, I was sure he would take the Celtic job if offered it, so maybe something at Villa has been in the pipeline?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,518 ✭✭✭matrim

I wouldn't really be happy with Keane.

Lambert has a very hands off approach so Keane would be taking all training and doing alot of the day to day stuff. What happens in the lead up to internationals when most of our team is still around in Birmingham for training and he's off with Ireland?

Even ignoring that has he the temperament and training ability to bring us along? In the last 3 managers there have been plenty of rumours of bust ups between players and coaching staff and we had 2 sacked for bullying and being agressive with players. Has Keane calmed down enough to handle a situitation like that?

The problem with the Senderos thing is it's the usual 'he'd be fine as back up'. Most players who were signed last year were like that, handy, utility back ups. Get good starting players in and we can worry about back ups then. Would prefer someone good putting pressure on Vlaar and Okore rather than just automatically knowing who will be starting.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,190 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

Not a Villa fan but just wondering exactly how do the club think having Roy Keane working alongside Lambert will help things?

    This +10000.

We have an ok squad of backup players. We now need to add people to be starters and push the other guys into their role as backup players.

Vlaar is a good player, but going from the last couple of years it's likely he'll get an injury and be out for at least a month. This means that whoever comes in will have to be good enough to take that place and preferable make it hard for Vlaar to get back into the team when he's fit

That plus the fact that Okore is not used to playing the PL and has been out for a year with injury. It's impossible to know how well he'll do when fit

I don't really mind the Keane thing at all, the only thing I wonder is how it fits in with all the uncertainty with the owner etc, otherwise I think it's an interesting move. There's not many strong personalities at the club the last few years, someone you could say might shake it up a bit if it's not going a certain way. I would say the last strong personality was probably Olaf, or Stan.

The last few years the club has become a bit.....weak is the best word I can use to describe it. No one at all that stands out from someone else in that regards. It'll be interesting to see how he gets on, but I don't see it as a bad thing at all.

    Agree wholeheartedly.

Actually throughly enjoy the style the two lads have introduced into the Irish setup, I dont believe this is coming from O Neill on his own. We are just missing a good front man as a piece in the puzzle and we will be much better off for it.

Villa have good front men but are missing the confidence piece and are too easy to drop the head.

    Im happy with the appointment,

Oh absolutely, but bringing in substandard players only creates problems, as witnessed by the last 2 years.

Hangeland has just been released by Fulham now too, would be a much better choice than Senderos.

To be fair he hasnt exactly been on form either.

A reasonable 6/10 every game defender shouldnt be beyond us and our current wage sturcture. Also id say its about as good as we can expect atm.

Looks like Senderos has signed/will sign soon. A guy who struggled to get his place in the worst defence in the Premier League.

    'Backup'

No he isn't. He may be better than them, I wouldn't even bank on it. But he isn't 'a lot' better than any premiership footballer. He's among the lads at the bottom of that barrel.

Senderos...Hey our back four is poor so let's make it even worse!

There is no positive spin you can put on this signing. Every bit as calamitous as Baker.

Roy Keane could end up karate kicking this guy instead of a tactics board
