He might have the SSID hidden, did you ask for it? If it's not hidden and it doesn't appear on a scan then the signal strength isn't good enough to be received next door.

Wi-Fi passwords are usually case sensitive just in case..

Going through a cavity wall can be a pain with a wifi signal. May struggle to pick up any kind of signal. All depends how far the router is from your pc.

Thanks for the replies!! :) his signal is actually really strong and it has all the bars lighting! It's available to connect but I literally can't!!:( what's ssid?

AVERAGE router has range about 20- 30 ft ,so you may be too far away,
after 20ft my signal disappears .
signal can be blocked by thick walls ,put your laptop ,close to your neighbours wall ,side.
how many bars can you get on a smartphone, ipod touch.
the router is usually within 12 ft of where the main phone terminal box,
or near the cable tv,fibre box.
the password ,say password= User 1 has to be correct ,eg USER 1 will not work.

ssid is the name of the router eg smartelecom 1aa,
    the broadband modem device name.
eg the first time i got a router ,on smart,
i think i had to put in username ,
and password,to connect to the web,

which they sent me in a letter 7 years go.

go to eircom, smart ,vodaphone,,homepage ,
eg neighbours broadand provider homepage, help, setup, home broadband, for simple, faq,

    router set up,
    acess the net ,basic faqs,

some times you put in your username,
    leave password box, blank,
    click,
    ok, connect.
    http://www.speedguide.net/faq_in_q.php?qid=81

each company eg eircom, smart ,router modem, has an ssid, to let you know this is your router ,
    connect to it.
    connect to it ,

how many bars are you getting on wifi signal.?

The neighbour that's further away from him that also has his permission is using it no bothers!! I'm getting all the bars, which is 5!!

Ssid is the name of his network ie upc23456, make sure you are not connecting to another neighbours network

  • Registered Users Posts: 135 ✭✭Nelly1234

Oh right!! I have the right name tho!

    eg sssid example, eircom 117,
    vodaphone 240,
say your neighbour is on eircom,
no point in connecting to vodafone ssids, routers.
make sure the password is correct syntax,
    eg ADMIN 2o5,
    not admin205.
make sure your router is using the same WIFI security type,
    eg wpa/wpa2 ,
maybe your router is not set to wifi security protocol ,wpa/wpa2
    .
i think most routers use wpa2 now.

Are your wifi card drivers and Windows up to date?
Post your computer model / OS version / wifi card model

edit; your post above answers that!

Look at your router, or pc wifi card wifi security settings.
    wifi security type protocol,
set to wpa/wpa2 or whatever protocol your neighbours router is using.

most routers are set to wpa/wpa2.

its possible your neighbour may be using wep wireless security standard.

you may need your router password to acess wifi settings,

    try admin,

or look at router label ,underneath the router,
    password ,

    many routers have username,
password on a label underneath.router, from irish broadband providers.

    your neighbour, may not realise,
    eircom77,
    wont work,

if real password is Eircom 77,

are you using a wifi router, connected to a pc,
    or

just a wifi card on a pc to connect?
is wifi card set to wpa/wpa2?

  • Registered Users Posts: 135 ✭✭Nelly1234

Got it working!!! Thanks guys!! Found out I was missing a number in the password!

Anyone know if possible, how can you monitor usage of wifi??

DOWNLOAD a program called bitmeter 2,it tells you how much data you use,per day, week, in the last month,

    http://codebox.org.uk/pages/bitmeter2

    each company ,eg eircom,
    has a download limit,.
    usually 400gig plus,per customer,
check the home page home broadband company faq limits download.

leave it on all the time the pc,laptop is on,

you can put in a limit, download,
eg tell me if i go over 100gig in the next month, in menu, settings.

eg a 3 minute youtube video, non hd, is about 10 megabyte.

Absolutely tiny. It's probably about equal to the size of this page you're viewing right now.

Windows 8 has a built in Usage Meter for Wi-Fi.

Click on the WiFi symbol in your task bar beside the clock.
The list of networks should pop out from the right of the screen.
Right click on the network you are using and click on "Show Estimated Data Usage"

Would that be the usage for just the Win8 device or the total usage?

These are always local figures. If you want global usage data for your internet connection get a router compatible with DD-WRT or Tomato firmware.

I wasn't looking for global, I was just wondering was it usage on a single device or all devices to that particular local network.

I checked my usage on the Win8 device and its only at 2.2GB for the last 10 days, I thought that was quite low considering I've watched a few hours of videos on youtube, couple of movies on netflix and I use torrents.

Depends on what you were torrenting but on the whole of it, it seems pretty normal.

A couple of live concerts that I think were close to a GB each and I also downloaded Ubuntu.

what operating system is your system using?

win vista is terrible at wifi... make sure you have the wifi card manufacturer's drivers not the crappy microsoft drivers installed

win 8 requires that you choose "yes" when asked about file & printer sharing otherwise it puts you in a public network with local only access.

Do you ever read threads before posting? May I point you to posts #10 (Windows 8 laptop) and #17 (Got it working!). :D

I'm not even sure how Windows Vista can be "terrible" at Wifi. I know it has a bad name(it actually wasn't that bad), but how do you manage to equate OS to Wireless performance?
