More in their line to fine the people who come out of fast food outlets and intentionally throw litter around the place, I would have thought that would be more of an issue for you than a bit of straw here and there.

Don't see why you'd need to defend a certain thing by mentioning the indefensible actions of other people, tbh. And it's not just a "bit of straw here and there".. it is strewn the length of the village and impossible to remedy due to the how frequently it happens.

The lads have absolutely no regard whatsoever..

Sick of the farmers traversing the country breaking the law with no registration numbers on their trailers and trailers unworthy of being on the road, bald tyres, broken lights etc, accidents waiting to happen

It's the first time in my life to see a farmer being stopped for lack of registration plates and hope to see more of it

    Well done Garda!

I hope this isnt keeping you awake at night !

If it really was money they were out for they'd be outside every Church in the country on Sunday mornings handing out parking tickets.

(And I'd be delighted if they did)

IT IS POSSIBLE TO SEE INTO MOST TRAILERS AND SO ONE CAN ASCERTAIN WHAT IT IS CARRYING. THEREFORE ONE CAN SEE IF IT IS A LAWN MOWER OR SOMETHING OF AN AGRICULTURAL NATURE .

    You asked me:
Can you honestly say you have never driven behind a car (often a young 4x4) pulling a trailor which has inoperative lights? Really?

    To which I replied:

Ah come off it. Yes I've driven behind a trailer with no lights. Not that often though. Might not be farmers though. Could be a man transporting a lawnmower for example.

My point being that yes, I have witnessed a trailer with inadequate lights BUT it wasn't necessarily a farmer, i.e. a person pulling a small trailer carrying gardening paraphernalia. Never got close enough to measure the thread dept of the tyres though. ;)

The OP specifically targeted farmers for being dismissive of the rules of the road regarding pulling a trailer. I'm pointing out that I have witnessed farmers that had inadequate lighting on their trailers AND non farming people that had inadequate lighting on their trailer. Neither of which I have witnessed very often. Therefore I've more than a sneaking suspicion that the OP is on a rant against farmers and farmers alone.

Not if its a trailor full of turf, cows, sheep or horses. they tend to damage the lawn mower.

    You can see into trailers..............

Um, horse boxes, I've found, tend to be quite well kept. I don't have much experience of the rest but I can say that any horse box owner I know (and I know a lot), keep their boxes up to scratch.

Tbh i dont see the harm in the farmers traveling with no reg plates its not the biggest crime in the world and the tractors arent reknowned for breaking speed limits either , The farmers have to do their work too, but if a trailer was found to be unworthy of being on the road then fair enough like i could see why they would be pulled over then. I live in a rural enough community and most if not all tractors have been up to scratch tho

If the OP saw a farmer hauling a shiney new trailer, with lights, brakes and all the gear, he would be in here, **** on about wealthy farmers with new trailers, getting college grants for their kids.

All those terrible trailers, tearing up and down the extremely busy rural back roads at 15kph killing people in swathes.

I work in a warehouse and many of the artic trucks that come in would have no reg in the trailer because when the drivers change trailers they don't bother putting the reg on the one they pick up.

I see them on the motorway as well, now to me this seems a bit more serious compared to a farmer bringing a few cattle from A to B on a country road.

what about the farmers dragging inches of muck for hundereds of yards up and down the roads and all the cow sh1te all over the roads outside their yards with the acid from it destroying the surface, anybody who defends this really should not be driving

Report them immeadiately. I wouldn't get away with that for 20 mins, rightfully so. I would be given leeway while a harvesting operation was ongoing during daylight providing there were warning signs but the road would have to be cleared and cleaned by nightfall.

They're supposed to do a 'Pre Trip' inspection of both the lorry and the trailer before they leave the yard or customer. It's the company they work for responsibility to have everything in order but a driver shouldn't head out if things are not right. They should phone their Driver Manager and get it sorted. Owner Operators working for a haulege company likewise.

I believe it happened at a mart inspection in which the department and welfare guys were also there.

And everyone will be giving out about the overtime they are on.

What sort of farmer was he? One of the one in 5 irish farmers that now lives in poverty. trying to keep his head above water by doin a bit on an auld beat up tractor he probably never takes further than half a mile down the road. away and sh!te op. guards should have bigger fish to fry than to be out fining people already crippled with taxation and regulations that are little more than money spinners

This post oozes of bs. How does the op know why the guard was stopping the farmer? If the only reason the guard was stopping the farmer was over a reg plate then the guard must have very little else to do! I see farmers on the road with broken lights on their trailers, same as I see lorry's, buses, cars and even emergency vehicles with broken lights. BTW, Is it just farmers driving with broken lights that bother you so much OP or do you have the same level of dislike for anyone driving with broken lights?

Try this OP. Stop for a minute, right where you are. Relax your shoulders, shake your head and spine like a dog shaking off water and tell that imperious voice in you head to shut up.

Gardaí should put their time to more productive use locking up bankers & junkies. But, no more than motor tax they prefer the soft target.
